The Brutal Murder of George J. Bushman

In the fall of 1918 there occurred in Adams County a singularly brutal murder that brought the County and the town of Gettysburg to a shocked standstill. The tentacles of this event would reach into four Pennsylvania counties: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, and Philadelphia, and eventually the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The investigation of the crime and the trial of the perpetrators involved so many public officials and families, as well as the extended judicial system and geographical locations within and without the County, that we have included a Cast of Characters and Locations to assist the reader in following this convoluted tale

Chiral Extrapolations of the ρ(770)\boldsymbol{\rho(770)} Meson in Nf=2+1\mathbf{N_f=2+1} Lattice QCD Simulations

Recent Nf=2+1N_f=2+1 lattice data for meson-meson scattering in pp-wave and isospin I=1I=1 are analyzed using a unitarized model inspired by Chiral Perturbation Theory in the inverse-amplitude formulation for two and three flavors. Chiral extrapolations are performed that postdict phase shifts extracted from experiment quite well. In addition, the low-energy constants are compared to the ones from a recent analysis of Nf=2N_f=2 lattice QCD simulations to check for the consistency of the hadronic model used here. Some inconsistencies are detected in the fits to Nf=2+1N_f=2+1 data, in contrast to the previous analysis of Nf=2N_f=2 data.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

Vevacious: A Tool For Finding The Global Minima Of One-Loop Effective Potentials With Many Scalars

    Get PDF
Several extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics contain additional scalars implying a more complex scalar potential compared to that of the Standard Model. In general these potentials allow for charge and/or color breaking minima besides the desired one with correctly broken SU(2)_L times U(1)_Y . Even if one assumes that a metastable local minimum is realized, one has to ensure that its lifetime exceeds that of our universe. We introduce a new program called Vevacious which takes a generic expression for a one-loop effective potential energy function and finds all the tree-level extrema, which are then used as the starting points for gradient-based minimization of the one-loop effective potential. The tunneling time from a given input vacuum to the deepest minimum, if different from the input vacuum, can be calculated. The parameter points are given as files in the SLHA format (though is not restricted to supersymmetric models), and new model files can be easily generated automatically by the Mathematica package SARAH. This code uses HOM4PS2 to find all the minima of the tree-level potential, PyMinuit to follow gradients to the minima of the one-loop potential, and CosmoTransitions to calculate tunneling times.Comment: 44 pages, 1 figure, manual for publicly available software, v2 corresponds to version accepted for publication in EPJC [clearer explanation of scale dependence and region of validity, explicit mention that SLHA files should have blocks matching those expected by model files, updated references

Prediction of narrow NN^{*} and Λ\Lambda^* resonances with hidden charm above 4 GeV

    Get PDF
The interaction between various charmed mesons and charmed baryons are studied within the framework of the coupled channel unitary approach with the local hidden gauge formalism. Several meson-baryon dynamically generated narrow NN^* and Λ\Lambda^* resonances with hidden charm are predicted with mass above 4 GeV and width smaller than 100 MeV. The predicted new resonances definitely cannot be accommodated by quark models with three constituent quarks and can be looked for at the forthcoming PANDA/FAIR experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Brands of fire in the memory : the unpublished autobiography of Iverna Codina

    Get PDF
The present research approaches the unpublished autobiography of Iverna Codina, a prestigious Chilean-Argentinean writer, fully connected to Mendoza and living in Buenos Aires. She offers, in Diez años de exilio (1976-1986) , two countries: Cuba and Mexico. Her outlook is intimate and inquisitorial searching into her personal history and that of her environment, centred in the Argentinean military Process. Her memory covers the uneven ground of her past in order to revisit with magnanimity her own existence and work. Both reflect different experiences in a deep and intense American sensitivityFil: Molina, Hebe B.. Universidad Nacional de Cuy

Satellite-derived land surface parameters for mesoscale modelling of the Mexico City basin

International audienceMesoscale meteorological modelling is an important tool to help understand air pollution and heat island effects in urban areas. Accurate wind simulations are difficult to obtain in areas of weak synoptic forcing. Local factors have a dominant role in the circulation and include land surface parameters and their interaction with the atmosphere. This paper examines an episode during the MCMA-2003 field campaign held in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) in April of 2003. High resolution satellite observations are used to specify the land use, vegetation fraction, albedo and surface temperature in the MM5 model. Making use of these readily available data leads to improved meteorological simulations in the MCMA, both for the wind circulation patterns and the urban heat island. Replacing values previously obtained from land-use tables with actual measurements removes the number of unknowns in the model and increases the accuracy of the energy budget. In addition to improving the understanding of local meteorology, this sets the stage for the use of advanced urban modules
