Review of finite fields: Applications to discrete Fourier, transforms and Reed-Solomon coding
An attempt is made to provide a step-by-step approach to the subject of finite fields. Rigorous proofs and highly theoretical materials are avoided. The simple concepts of groups, rings, and fields are discussed and developed more or less heuristically. Examples are used liberally to illustrate the meaning of definitions and theories. Applications include discrete Fourier transforms and Reed-Solomon coding
General pairing interactions and pair truncation approximations for fermions in a single-j shell
We investigate Hamiltonians with attractive interactions between pairs of
fermions coupled to angular momentum J. We show that pairs with spin J are
reasonable building blocks for the low-lying states. For systems with only a J
= Jmax pairing interaction, eigenvalues are found to be approximately integers
for a large array of states, in particular for those with total angular momenta
I le 2j. For I=0 eigenstates of four fermions in a single-j shell we show that
there is only one non-zero eigenvalue. We address these observations using the
nucleon pair approximation of the shell model and relate our results with a

Structure of wavefunctions in (1+2)-body random matrix ensembles
Abstrtact: Random matrix ensembles defined by a mean-field one-body plus a
chaos generating random two-body interaction (called embedded ensembles of
(1+2)-body interactions) predict for wavefunctions, in the chaotic domain, an
essentially one parameter Gaussian forms for the energy dependence of the
number of principal components NPC and the localization length {\boldmath
l}_H (defined by information entropy), which are two important measures of
chaos in finite interacting many particle systems. Numerical embedded ensemble
calculations and nuclear shell model results, for NPC and {\boldmath l}_H,
are compared with the theory. These analysis clearly point out that for
realistic finite interacting many particle systems, in the chaotic domain,

Quadrupole and Hexadecapole Correlations in Rotating Nuclei Studied within the Single-j Shell Model
The influence of quadrupole and hexadecapole residual interactions on
rotational bands is investigated in a single-j shell model. An exact
shell-model diagonalization of quadrupole-plus-hexadecapole interaction can

"Engaging with birth stories in pregnancy: a hermeneutic phenomenological study of women's experiences across two generations"
BACKGROUND: The birth story has been widely understood as a crucial source of knowledge about childbirth. What has not been reported is the effect that birth stories may have on primigravid women's understandings of birth. Findings are presented from a qualitative study exploring how two generations of women came to understand birth in the milieu of other's stories. The prior assumption was that birth stories must surely have a positive or negative influence on listeners, steering them towards either medical or midwifery-led models of care.
METHODS: A Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used. Twenty UK participants were purposively selected and interviewed. Findings from the initial sample of 10 women who were pregnant in 2012 indicated that virtual media was a primary source of birth stories. This led to recruitment of a second sample of 10 women who gave birth in the 1970s-1980s, to determine whether they were more able to translate information into knowledge via stories told through personal contact and not through virtual technologies
RESULTS: Findings revealed the experience of 'being-in-the-world' of birth and of stories in that world. From a Heideggerian perspective, the birth story was constructed through 'idle talk' (the taken for granted assumptions of things, which come into being through language). Both oral stories and those told through technology were described as the 'modern birth story'. The first theme 'Stories are difficult like that', examines the birth story as problematic and considers how stories shape meaning. The second 'It's a generational thing', considers how women from two generations came to understand what their experience might be. The third 'Birth in the twilight of certainty,' examines women's experience of Being in a system of birth as constructed, portrayed and sustained in the stories being shared.
CONCLUSIONS: The women pregnant in 2012 framed their expectations in the language of choice, whilst the women who birthed in the 1970s-1980s framed their experience in the language of safety. For both, however, the world of birth was the same; saturated with, and only legitimised by the birth of a healthy baby. Rather than creating meaningful understanding, the 'idle talk' of birth made both cohorts fearful of leaving the relative comfort of the 'system', and of claiming an alternative birth

The performance, costs, organization and other characteristics of both the manual system and AIDS 2 were used to establish a baseline case. The results of the evaluation are to be used to determine the feasibility of the AIDS 3 System, as well as provide a basis for ranking alternative systems during the second phase of the JPL study. The results of the study were tabulated by subject, scope and methods, providing a descriptive, quantitative and qualitative analysis of the current operating systems employed by the FBI Identification Division
FBI fingerprint identification automation study: AIDS 3 evaluation report. Volume 6: Environmental analysis
The results of the analysis of the external environment of the FBI Fingerprint Identification Division are presented. Possible trends in the future environment of the Division that may have an effect on the work load were projected to determine if future work load will lie within the capability range of the proposed new system, AIDS 3. Two working models of the environment were developed, the internal and external model, and from these scenarios the projection of possible future work load volume and mixture was developed. Possible drivers of work load change were identified and assessed for upper and lower bounds of effects. Data used for the study were derived from historical information, analysis of the current situation and from interviews with various agencies who are users of or stakeholders in the present system
FBI fingerprint identification automation study. AIDS 3 evaluation report. Volume 3: Operational feasibility
An evaluation is presented which is defined as the adequacy of system design with known functional and performance requirements. The proposed Rockwell International AIDS 3 card, document and data flow are presented to summarize the concepts involved and the relationships between functions. The analysis and evaluation includes a study of system capability, processing rates, search requirements and response accuracy as well as a consideration of operational components and hardware integration. Results indicate that the AIDS 3 System concept is operationally feasible if production capacity is slightly enhanced but that operational complexity, hardware integration and a lack of conceptual data pertinent to some of the functions are areas of concern
