Bioactivity in Echinoderms
Man in his pursuit for knowledge of newer and better drugs for eradicating diseases to which he is
prone to has turned to the sea, which is a more potential treasure house of drugs due to its vast and diverse range of marine life. Many marine organisms exhibit toxicity as well as bioactivity. Some are toxic and lethal to terrestrial animals as well as to the man. The Phylum Echinodermata consists of sea cucumbers
(holothurians), star lishes and sea urchins. These are known for their toxicity. This report deals with the results of the screening of 10 species of echinoderms collected from Gulf of Mannar area for biotoxicity to fishes and mice and also for hemolytic activity. The results showed that all the parts of Holothuria
atra H. spinifera and Behadschia marmorata exhibited a high degree of toxicity to fish fingerlings and mice and also destructive action on erythrocyte cells
Cross sectional, qualitative thematic analysis of patient perspectives of disease impact in juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis
BACKGROUND: Chronic health conditions in children can have a significant impact on their quality of life. The aim of this study was to explore the subjective experience of children and young people being treated for chronic, non-infectious uveitis associated with a systemic disease such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis. METHODS: A semi-structured interview was conducted with 10 children and young people aged between 6 and 18 years of age and their parents. RESULTS: Preliminary thematic analysis indicated that both the treatment and complications of the disorder have a significant impact on the quality of life and emotional well-being of patients, not only in terms of the discomfort experienced but also in perceptions of social isolation, anxiety and sense of injustice. CONCLUSION: This study shows that themes including "impact on school", "social factors" and "emotional reactions" are important domains influencing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with chronic uveitis. Inclusion of questions relating to these domains should be considered in future uveitis-specific tools examining HRQoL in these patients

Environmental Impacts of Intensive Cardamom (Small) Cultivation in Indian Cardamom Hills: The Need for Sustainable and Efficient Practices
The recent intensification of small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) farming, and the prospects of intensification, will have the major detrimental impacts on the Indian cardamom hills (ICH) ecosystem. The increased (4 fold) cardamom production during the past 30 years was associated with a several fold increase in the consumption of fertilizers and pesticides as well as drastic reduction in erstwhile rainforest land and canopy cover. Based on simple linear extension of past trends, and the anticipated future demand of cardamom would be associated with approximately 3 fold increase in both nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer rates as well as pesticides ( 4-5 fold increase in number of spray rounds) and further reduction in forest canopy cover (40%). These projected changes would have dramatic impacts on the functioning of the cardamom ecosystem because of complete loss of biodiversity and land and forest degradation. The largest impacts would be on fresh water ecosystem, which would be greatly eutrophied by high rates of nitrogen and phosphorus release from cardamom and tea plantations, and contaminated with various toxic pesticides. These detrimental environmental impacts of intensive cardamom agriculture can be minimized only if there is much more efficient use and recycling of nutrients between forest and soil
Understanding Interorganizational Learning Based on Social Spaces and Learning Episodes
Different organizational settings have been gaining ground in the world economy, resulting in a proliferation of
different forms of strategic alliances that translate into a growth in the number of organizations that have started
to deal with interorganizational relationships with different actors. These circumstances reinforce Crossan, Lane,
White and Djurfeldt (1995) and Crossan, Mauer and White (2011) in exploring what authors refer to as the
fourth, interorganizational, level of learning. These authors, amongst others, suggest that the process of
interorganizational learning (IOL) warrants investigation, as its scope of analysis needs widening and deepening.
Therefore, this theoretical essay is an attempt to understand IOL as a dynamic process found in
interorganizational cooperative relationships that can take place in different structured and unstructured social
spaces and that can generate learning episodes. According to this view, IOL is understood as part of an
organizational learning continuum and is analyzed within the framework of practical rationality in an approach
that is less cognitive and more social-behavioral
Anthroponotic transmission of Cryptosporidium parvum predominates in countries with poorer sanitation - a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Globally cryptosporidiosis is one of the commonest causes of mortality in children under 24 months old and may be associated with important longterm health effects. Whilst most strains of Cryptosporidium parvum are zoonotic, C. parvum IIc is almost certainly anthroponotic. The global distribution of this potentially important emerging infection is not clear. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of papers identifying the subtype distribution of C. parvum infections globally. We searched PubMed and Scopus using the following key terms Cryptospor* AND parvum AND (genotyp* OR subtyp* OR gp60). Studies were eligible for inclusion if they had found C. parvum within their human study population and had subtyped some or all of these samples using standard gp60 subtyping. Pooled analyses of the proportion of strains being of the IIc subtype were determined using StatsDirect. Meta-regression analyses were run to determine any association between the relative prevalence of IIc and Gross Domestic Product, proportion of the population with access to improved drinking water and improved sanitation. Results: From an initial 843 studies, 85 were included in further analysis. Cryptosporidium parvum IIc was found in 43 of these 85 studies. Across all studies the pooled estimate of relative prevalence of IIc was 19.0% (95% CI: 12.9–25.9%), but there was substantial heterogeneity. In a meta-regression analysis, the relative proportion of all C. parvum infections being IIc decreased as the percentage of the population with access to improved sanitation increased and was some 3.4 times higher in those studies focussing on HIV-positive indivduals. Conclusions: The anthroponotic C. parvum IIc predominates primarily in lower-income countries with poor sanitation and in HIV-positive individuals. Given the apparent enhanced post-infectious virulence of the other main anthroponotic species of Cryptosporidium (C. hominis), it is important to learn about the impact of this subtype on human health

Role of Flavonoids in Combating Hyperuricemia
Individuals tend to have an increased blood uric acid level at a younger age due to their dietary choices and lifestyle, which can lead to major health concerns such as hyperuricemia, gout, cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, and inflammation. Flavonoids have been proven to have strong inhibitory action against xanthine oxidase and be able to lower serum uric acid levels, levels of adenosine deaminase, gene expressions of renal glucose transporter type 9 (mGLUT9) and uric acid transporter 1 (mURAT1), along with increased expression of organic anion transporters (mOAT1 and mOAT3) and organic cation transporters (mOCT1 and mOCT2). Furthermore, flavonoids enhanced renal function and antioxidant activity in hyperuricemic rats. In hyperuricemic mice, genistein reduced renal fibrosis by inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways. Overall, this review reveals that the flavonoids have substantial anti-hyperuricemia and associated disease potential and may be utilized as natural supplements for the treatment of Uric acid-related illnesses
