Male and female emirati medical clerks’ perceptions of the impact of gender and mobility on their professional careers
Background: Medicine has undergone profound changes in terms of the number of women entering the profession with postulated implications of this ‘feminization’ for the profession. The present phenomenological study sought to gain insight into the experiences of final year male and female Emirati medical students (clerks) in terms of the impact of gender on their careers. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 of the 27 clerks. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed thematically. Findings: There was consensus that the gender profile of medicine in the United Arab Emirates was changing as opportunities emerged for Emirati women to branch into different medical specialties. These opportunities were, however, local or regional due largely to travel restrictions on women. Females would thus receive a less highly regarded board certification than males who were encouraged to specialize abroad. On their return, males would be appointed as consultants or as high-ranking administrators. Participants also acknowledged that like their roles in their society, some medical specialties were ‘gendered’, e.g., surgery (male) and pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology (female). Conclusion: Although religious and cultural traditions around gender and mobility will influence the professional careers of male and female Emirati medical graduates, the situation is, however, changing

Internal communication has become an important factor in today's business world. The increased use of electronic media can, despite their obvious advantages, cause communication problems, i.e. information overload. By avoiding communication problems, the productivity of a company can be increased. The relation between internal communication and productivity has been subject of a number of surveys. Although different survey approaches have been used, all found that there is a positive impact of communication on productivity. Since different communication dimensions have a different impact on an employee's perceived productivity, effective and efficient internal communication has to be managed, therefore, in accordance with the situation of each company and its employees. -- In der heutigen Geschäftswelt gewinnt interne Kommunikation als Wettbewerbsfaktor eine zunehmende Bedeutung. The influence of distraction on speech processing: How selective is selective attention?
-* indicates shared first authorship - The present study investigated the effects of selective attention on the processing of morphosyntactic errors in unattended parts of speech. Two groups of German native (L1) speakers participated in the present study. Participants listened to sentences in which irregular verbs were manipulated in three different conditions (correct, incorrect but attested ablaut pattern, incorrect and crosslinguistically unattested ablaut pattern). In order to track fast dynamic neural reactions to the stimuli, electroencephalography was used. After each sentence, participants in Experiment 1 performed a semantic judgement task, which deliberately distracted the participants from the syntactic manipulations and directed their attention to the semantic content of the sentence. In Experiment 2, participants carried out a syntactic judgement task, which put their attention on the critical stimuli. The use of two different attentional tasks allowed for investigating the impact of selective attention on speech processing and whether morphosyntactic processing steps are performed automatically. In Experiment 2, the incorrect attested condition elicited a larger N400 component compared to the correct condition, whereas in Experiment 1 no differences between conditions were found. These results suggest that the processing of morphosyntactic violations in irregular verbs is not entirely automatic but seems to be strongly affected by selective attention
Signatures of Interchange Reconnection: STEREO, ACE and Hinode Observations Combined
Combining STEREO, ACE and Hinode observations has presented an opportunity to
follow a filament eruption and coronal mass ejection (CME) on the 17th of
October 2007 from an active region (AR) inside a coronal hole (CH) into the
heliosphere. This particular combination of `open' and closed magnetic
topologies provides an ideal scenario for interchange reconnection to take
place. With Hinode and STEREO data we were able to identify the emergence time
and type of structure seen in the in-situ data four days later. On the 21st,
ACE observed in-situ the passage of an ICME with `open' magnetic topology. The
magnetic field configuration of the source, a mature AR located inside an
equatorial CH, has important implications for the solar and interplanetary
signatures of the eruption. We interpret the formation of an `anemone'
structure of the erupting AR and the passage in-situ of the ICME being
disconnected at one leg, as manifested by uni-directional suprathermal electron
flux in the ICME, to be a direct result of interchange reconnection between
closed loops of the CME originating from the AR and `open' field lines of the

Using airborne LiDAR Survey to explore historic-era archaeological landscapes of Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean
This article describes what appears to be the first archaeological application of airborne LiDAR survey to historic-era landscapes in the Caribbean archipelago, on the island of Montserrat. LiDAR is proving invaluable in extending the reach of traditional pedestrian survey into less favorable areas, such as those covered by dense neotropical forest and by ashfall from the past two decades of active eruptions by the Soufrière Hills volcano, and to sites in localities that are inaccessible on account of volcanic dangers. Emphasis is placed on two aspects of the research: first, the importance of ongoing, real-time interaction between the LiDAR analyst and the archaeological team in the field; and second, the advantages of exploiting the full potential of the three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud data for purposes of the visualization of archaeological sites and features
Statistics of counter-streaming solar wind suprathermal electrons at solar minimum : STEREO observations
Previous work has shown that solar wind suprathermal electrons can display a number of features in terms of their anisotropy. Of importance is the occurrence of counter-streaming electron patterns, i.e., with "beams" both parallel and anti-parallel to the local magnetic field, which is believed to shed light on the heliospheric magnetic field topology. In the present study, we use STEREO data to obtain the statistical properties of counter-streaming suprathermal electrons (CSEs) in the vicinity of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) during the period March–December 2007. Because this period corresponds to a minimum of solar activity, the results are unrelated to the sampling of large-scale coronal mass ejections, which can lead to CSE owing to their closed magnetic field topology. The present study statistically confirms that CSEs are primarily the result of suprathermal electron leakage from the compressed CIR into the upstream regions with the combined occurrence of halo depletion at 90° pitch angle. The occurrence rate of CSE is found to be about 15–20% on average during the period analyzed (depending on the criteria used), but superposed epoch analysis demonstrates that CSEs are preferentially observed both before and after the passage of the stream interface (with peak occurrence rate >35% in the trailing high speed stream), as well as both inside and outside CIRs. The results quantitatively show that CSEs are common in the solar wind during solar minimum, but yet they suggest that such distributions would be much more common if pitch angle scattering were absent. We further argue that (1) the formation of shocks contributes to the occurrence of enhanced counter-streaming sunward-directed fluxes, but does not appear to be a necessary condition, and (2) that the presence of small-scale transients with closed-field topologies likely also contributes to the occurrence of counter-streaming patterns, but only in the slow solar wind prior to CIRs
Prognostic significance of epithelial-mesenchymal transition in malignant pleural mesothelioma
Background: Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a morphologic transdifferentiation of carcinomas, conferring increased tumour invasiveness, but may also be applied to the epithelioid versus sarcomatoid histotype of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Herein, we correlated proteins of a putative MPM-EMT axis, including periostin, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), integrin beta1, phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN), integrin-linked kinase (ILK), p21 and p27, with clinico-pathologic parameters, in particular overall survival (OS). Patients and Methods: A retrospective cohort of 352 mostly untreated patients with MPM was investigated by immunohistochemistry of a tissue microarray. Protein expression intensities were semi-quantitatively scored from 0 to 3 in their respective compartments, including peritumoural stroma as well as tumour cell plasma membrane, cytoplasm or nucleus. Data were correlated with histotype and survival outcome. Results: A total of 32% of the tumours were diagnosed as epithelioid, 13% as sarcomatoid and 55% as biphasic histotype. High expression of membranous EGFR and integrin beta1 as well as nuclear p27 correlated with the epithelioid and high expression of cytoplasmic tumoural and stromal periostin with the sarcomatoid histotype. The median survival time of the 128 patients with complete follow-up data was 11.7 months. Univariate survival analysis revealed age, epithelioid histotype and any therapy as prognosticators for better OS. High expression of cytoplasmic PTEN or ILK as well as high expression of nuclear p21 or p27 correlated with increased, whereas high expression of cytoplasmic periostin with decreased OS (all p values <0.05). Multivariate Cox regression revealed any treatment, low cytoplasmic periostin and high cytoplasmic PTEN as independent prognosticators for better OS. Conclusion: Activation of periostin-triggered EMT is associated with the sarcomatoid histotype and has an impact on shorter survival of MPM patients.
