Design guidelines for assessing and controlling spacecraft charging effects
The need for uniform criteria, or guidelines, to be used in all phases of spacecraft design is discussed. Guidelines were developed for the control of absolute and differential charging of spacecraft surfaces by the lower energy space charged particle environment. Interior charging due to higher energy particles is not considered. A guide to good design practices for assessing and controlling charging effects is presented. Uniform design practices for all space vehicles are outlined
Knowledge Acquisition by Networks of Interacting Agents in the Presence of Observation Errors
In this work we investigate knowledge acquisition as performed by multiple
agents interacting as they infer, under the presence of observation errors,
respective models of a complex system. We focus the specific case in which, at
each time step, each agent takes into account its current observation as well
as the average of the models of its neighbors. The agents are connected by a
network of interaction of Erd\H{o}s-Renyi or Barabasi-Albert type. First we
investigate situations in which one of the agents has a different probability
of observation error (higher or lower). It is shown that the influence of this
special agent over the quality of the models inferred by the rest of the
network can be substantial, varying linearly with the respective degree of the
agent with different estimation error. In case the degree of this agent is
taken as a respective fitness parameter, the effect of the different estimation
error is even more pronounced, becoming superlinear. To complement our
analysis, we provide the analytical solution of the overall behavior of the
system. We also investigate the knowledge acquisition dynamic when the agents
are grouped into communities. We verify that the inclusion of edges between
agents (within a community) having higher probability of observation error
promotes the loss of quality in the estimation of the agents in the other

Horizontal and vertical profiles of ozone, carbon monoxide, non-methane hydrocarbons and dimethyl sulphide near the Mace Head observatory, Ireland
International audienceThe distribution of trace gases upwind and above the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station, Ireland has been determined using measurements made from aircraft. The observations indicate excellent agreement between most non-methane hydrocarbons, dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and ozone measured at the surface, at 390 m overhead and in upwind boundary layer regions of the coastal Atlantic. Vertical profiles above the observatory indicated that local convective events result in a marine influence being detected at 3 km and above. The observation of isoprene from maritime sources at these levels was indicative of very rapid uplift on the hour timescale. Measurements of trace gases were also made directly upwind of the observatory over coastal regions and as far as the deep open ocean beyond the continental shelf. A maximum of 240 pptV DMS was observed in the boundary layer near to the shelf region, declining to a concentration of around 40 pptV at the coastline. The upwelling of nutrient rich waters at the ocean shelf location may be a possible explanation for the high abundance of DMS in these regions. The observations suggest that this region, some 150?200 km from the observatory, would under these environmental conditions have a major influence in the determining the DMS observed on-shore. The spatial distribution of ethene within boundary layer over coastal and deep waters differed significantly from DMS with an almost uniform abundance over all ocean regions
Integrating ecology into macroevolutionary research
On 9 March, over 150 biologists gathered in London for the Centre for Ecology and Evolution spring symposium, ‘Integrating Ecology into Macroevolutionary Research’. The event brought together researchers from London-based institutions alongside others from across the UK, Europe and North America for a day of talks. The meeting highlighted methodological advances and recent analyses of exemplar datasets focusing on the exploration of the role of ecological processes in shaping macroevolutionary patterns
Corporate governance of the environment.
The global pursuit of a more sustainable future cannot be achieved without the active engagement of the business community. The challenge for business has been to strategically engage with and embed environmental responsibility within their wider corporate governance to create effective corporate governance of the environment. The assumption would appear to be, that we have already witnessed the construction of such governance, delivered through the attainment of a paradigmatic shift in corporate engagement with environmental issues. This thesis questions the validity of such an assumption, exploring what the reality of current corporate governance of the environment is, and the drivers which have shaped it. Through a dual strategy of web-based and questionnaire research, analysis is made of the FTSE 100 and 250 Index companies, the nature of their individual and aggregate strategising and attenuating corporate governance of the environment. The findings illustrate that far from having achieved a new paradigm of corporate environmental engagement, embodied through effective corporate governance of the environment, there exists significant levels of non- engagement within UK business. Quantitatively and qualitatively, the nature of current corporate governance of the environment, indicates that stakeholder expectations of a new era of informed corporate environmental responsibility have not yet been met there exists significant scope for developing current corporate governance in this context. Crucially, the findings also suggest for such companies, that in the absence of mandatory drivers for change, such a shift will not be forthcoming. This has important implications for the current, largely self-regulatory, policy approach prevailing in the UK
Scaling behaviour near jamming in random sequential adsorption
For the random Sequential adsorption model, we introduce the ‘availability’ as a new variable corresponding to the number of available locations in which an adsorbate can be accommodated. We investigate the relation of the availability to the coverage of the adsorbent surface over time. Power law scaling between the two is obtained both through numerical simulations and analytical techniques for both one- and two- dimensional random sequential adsorption, as well as in the case of competitive random sequential adsorption in one dimension
Influence of Coulomb and Phonon Interaction on the Exciton Formation Dynamics in Semiconductor Heterostructures
A microscopic theory is developed to analyze the dynamics of exciton
formation out of incoherent carriers in semiconductor heterostructures. The
carrier Coulomb and phonon interaction is included consistently. A cluster
expansion method is used to systematically truncate the hierarchy problem. By
including all correlations up to the four-point (i.e. two-particle) level, the
fundamental fermionic substructure of excitons is fully included. The analysis
shows that the exciton formation is an intricate process where Coulomb
correlations rapidly build up on a picosecond time scale while phonon dynamics
leads to true exciton formation on a slow nanosecond time scale.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
How children eat may contribute to rising levels of obesity children's eating behaviours: An intergenerational study of family influences
The term ‘obesogenic environment’ is rapidly becoming part of common phraseology. However, the influence of the family and the home environment on children's eating behaviours is little understood. Research that explores the impact of this micro environment and intergenerational influences affecting children's eating behaviours is long overdue. A qualitative, grounded theory approach, incorporating focus groups and semi-structured interviews, was used to investigate the family environment and specifically, the food culture of different generations within families. What emerged was a substantive theory based on ‘ordering of eating’ that explains differences in eating behaviours within and between families. Whereas at one time family eating was highly ordered and structured, typified by the grandparent generation, nowadays family eating behaviours are more haphazard and less ordered, evidenced by the way the current generation of children eat. Most importantly, in families with an obese child eating is less ordered compared with those families with a normal weight child. Ordering of eating' is a unique concept to emerge. It shows that an understanding of the eating process is crucial to the development and improvement of interventions targeted at addressing childhood obesity within the family context
