    An extension to GUM methodology: degrees-of-freedom calculations for correlated multidimensional estimates

    The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement advocates the use of an 'effective number of degrees of freedom' for the calculation of an interval of measurement uncertainty. However, it does not describe how this number is to be calculated when (i) the measurand is a vector quantity or (ii) when the errors in the estimates of the quantities defining the measurand (the 'input quantities') are not incurred independently. An appropriate analysis for a vector-valued measurand has been described (Metrologia 39 (2002) 361-9), and a method for a one-dimensional measurand with dependent errors has also been given (Metrologia 44 (2007) 340-9). This paper builds on those analyses to present a method for the situation where the problem is multidimensional and involves correlated errors. The result is an explicit general procedure that reduces to simpler procedures where appropriate. The example studied is from the field of radio-frequency metrology, where measured quantities are often complex-valued and can be regarded as vectors of two elements.Comment: 30 pages with 2 embedded figure

    Condensate splitting in an asymmetric double well for atom chip based sensors

    We report on the adiabatic splitting of a BEC of 87^{87}Rb atoms by an asymmetric double-well potential located above the edge of a perpendicularly magnetized TbGdFeCo film atom chip. By controlling the barrier height and double-well asymmetry the sensitivity of the axial splitting process is investigated through observation of the fractional atom distribution between the left and right wells. This process constitutes a novel sensor for which we infer a single shot sensitivity to gravity fields of δg/g2×104\delta g/g\approx2\times10^{-4}. From a simple analytic model we propose improvements to chip-based gravity detectors using this demonstrated methodology.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    As a part of the investigation of the control system failure Inertial Upper Stage on IUS-1 flight to position a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) in geosynchronous orbit, the materials utilized in the techroll seal are evaluated for possible failure models. Studies undertaken included effect of temperature on the strength of the system, effect of fatigue on the strength of the system, thermogravimetric analysis, thermomechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimeter analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and peel test. The most likely failure mode is excessive temperature in the seal. In addition, the seal material is susceptible to fatigue damage which could be a contributing factor

    Infinite series sum_{n=1}^infty {(alpha/2)_n / (n n!)}_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2), where_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2)={n!_(gamma)_n}L_n^(gamma-1)(x^2), appear in the first-order perturbation correction for the wavefunction of the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian H = -d^2/dx^2 + B x^2 + A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha 0 0, A >= 0. It is proved that the series is convergent for all x > 0 and 2 gamma > alpha, where gamma = 1 + (1/2)sqrt(1+4A). Closed-form sums are presented for these series for the cases alpha = 2, 4, and 6. A general formula for finding the sum for alpha/2 = 2 + m, m = 0,1,2, ..., in terms of associated Laguerre polynomials, is also provided.Comment: 16 page

    Status of coral reefs of Little Cayman, Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, British West Indies in 1999 and 2000. (Part 1: Stony corals and algae)

    A benthic assessment of the isolated Cayman Islands was completed at 42 sites. Major changes in the reef community structure were documented by comparison with earlier studies. Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, once abundant as shallow framework builders, were uncommon. Diseased stony corals were seen in \u3e90% of the study sites, with the highest averages in Little Cayman, especially at Bloody Bay which is one of the most highly regulated marine parks in the Cayman Islands. The Montastraea annularis species complex accounted for two-thirds of the diseased corals which, along with other massive species, were affected largely by white-plague disease. Recent partial-colony mortality was particularly high in Grand Cayman. However, small- to intermediate-sized (M. annularis complex) suggest a strong potential for population regeneration. Algal competition generally did not appear to be a problem for stony corals, and bleaching was insignificant, yet more prevalent, in the deeper (\u3e10 m) sites

    We study the discrete spectrum of the Hamiltonian H = -Delta + V(r) for the Coulomb plus power-law potential V(r)=-1/r+ beta sgn(q)r^q, where beta > 0, q > -2 and q \ne 0. We show by envelope theory that the discrete eigenvalues E_{n\ell} of H may be approximated by the semiclassical expression E_{n\ell}(q) \approx min_{r>0}\{1/r^2-1/(mu r)+ sgn(q) beta(nu r)^q}. Values of mu and nu are prescribed which yield upper and lower bounds. Accurate upper bounds are also obtained by use of a trial function of the form, psi(r)= r^{\ell+1}e^{-(xr)^{q}}. We give detailed results for V(r) = -1/r + beta r^q, q = 0.5, 1, 2 for n=1, \ell=0,1,2, along with comparison eigenvalues found by direct numerical methods.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    2MASS 1315-2649: A High Proper Motion L Dwarf with Strong H-alpha Emission

    In Hall (2002) I reported that 2MASSI J1315309-264951 is an L dwarf with strong H-alpha emission. Two spectroscopic epochs appeared to show that the H-alpha was variable, decreasing from 121 Angstroms to 25 Angstroms EW, which I interpreted as a flare during the first observation. Gizis (2002) independently discovered this object, and his intermediate spectroscopic epoch shows H-alpha with 97 Angstroms EW. A new fourth epoch of spectroscopy again shows a very large H-alpha EW (124 Angstroms), confirming this object to be a persistent, strong H-alpha emitter. Whether the H-alpha is steady (like 2MASS 1237+6526) or from continuous strong flaring (like PC0025+0447) remains unclear. Imaging confirms that 2MASS 1315-2649 has a high proper motion (0.71"/year), corresponding to a transverse velocity of ~76 km/s at its distance of ~23 pc. Thus 2MASS 1315-2649 is consistent with being >~2 Gyr old and therefore relatively massive. If that is so, the correlation of H-alph activity with mass found by Gizis et al. (2000) would seem to support the continuous strong flaring scenario, though it does not rule out a brown dwarf binary accretion scenario.Comment: 2 pages, ApJL accepte
