Solar Neutrinos: Spin Flavour Precession and LMA
The time dependence that appears to be hinted by the data from the first 13
years of the solar neutrino Gallium experiments is viewed as resulting from a
partial conversion of active neutrinos to light sterile ones through the
resonant interaction between the magnetic moment of the neutrino and a varying
solar field. A summary of the model and its predictions are presented for the
forthcoming experiments Borexino and LENS.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, contribution to 12th Lomonosov Conference in

Diagnostics of macroscopic quantum states of Bose-Einstein condensate in double-well potential by nonstationary Josephson effect
We propose a method of diagnostic of a degenerate ground state of Bose
condensate in a double well potential. The method is based on the study of the
one-particle coherent tunneling under switching the time-dependent weak
Josephson coupling between the wells. We obtain a simple expression that allows
to determine the phase of the condensate and the total number of the particles
in the condensate from the relative number of the particles in two wells
measured before the Josephson coupling is switched on and
after it is switched off. The specifics of the application of the method in the
cases of the external and the internal Josephson effect are discussed.Comment: 3 page
Stability of the Chari-Pressley-Loktev bases for local Weyl modules of
We prove stability of the Chari-Pressley-Loktev bases for natural inclusions
of local Weyl modules of the current algebra . These modules being
known to be Demazure submodules in the level 1 representations of the affine
Lie algebra , we obtain, by passage to the direct limit, bases
for the level 1 representations themselves.Comment: 20 pages; minor revision
Mossbauer neutrinos in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory
We demonstrate the correspondence between quantum mechanical and quantum
field theoretical descriptions of Mossbauer neutrino oscillations. First, we
compute the combined rate of Mossbauer neutrino emission, propagation,
and detection in quantum field theory, treating the neutrino as an internal
line of a tree level Feynman diagram. We include explicitly the effect of
homogeneous line broadening due to fluctuating electromagnetic fields in the
source and detector crystals and show that the resulting formula for
is identical to the one obtained previously (Akhmedov et al., arXiv:0802.2513)
for the case of inhomogeneous line broadening. We then proceed to a quantum
mechanical treatment of Mossbauer neutrinos and show that the oscillation,
coherence, and resonance terms from the field theoretical result can be
reproduced if the neutrino is described as a superposition of Lorentz-shaped
wave packet with appropriately chosen energies and widths. On the other hand,
the emission rate and the detection cross section, including localization and
Lamb-Mossbauer terms, cannot be predicted in quantum mechanics and have to be
put in by hand.Comment: LaTeX, 16 pages, 1 figure; v2: typos corrected; matches published

Oscillatory decay of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate
We study the decay of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with negative
effective interaction energy. With a decreasing atom number due to losses, the
atom-atom interaction becomes less important and the system undergoes a
transition from a bistable Josephson regime to the monostable Rabi regime,
displaying oscillations in phase and number. We study the equations of motion
and derive an analytical expression for the oscillation amplitude. A quantum
trajectory simulation reveals that the classical description fails for low
emission rates, as expected from analytical considerations. Observation of the
proposed effect will provide evidence for negative effective interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figue
Growth Stress Induced Tunability of Dielectric Constant in Thin Films
It is demonstrated here that growth stress has a substantial effect on the
dielectric constant of zirconia thin films. The correct combination of
parameters - phase, texture and stress - is shown to yield films with high
dielectric constant and best reported equivalent oxide thickness of 0.8 nm. The
stress effect on dielectric constant is twofold, firstly, by the effect on
phase transitions and secondly by the effect on interatomic distances. We
discuss and explain the physical mechanisms involved in the interplay between
the stress, phase changes and the dielectric constant in detail.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
A diagrammatic treatment of neutrino oscillations
We present a covariant wave-packet approach to neutrino flavor transitions in
vacuum. The approach is based on the technique of macroscopic Feynman diagrams
describing the lepton number violating processes of production and absorption
of virtual massive neutrinos at the macroscopically separated space-time
regions ("source" and "detector"). Accordingly, the flavor transitions are a
result of interference of the diagrams with neutrinos of different masses in
the intermediate states. The statistically averaged probability of the process
is representable as a multidimensional integral of the product of the factors
which describe the differential flux density of massless neutrinos from the
source, differential cross section of the neutrino interaction with the
detector and a dimensionless factor responsible for the flavor transition. The
conditions are analyzed under which the last factor can be treated as the
flavor transition probability in the usual quantum-mechanical sense.Comment: 27 pages,7 figures, iopart class. Includes minor corrections made in
