A plasmid bearing a cDNA copy of the genome of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), chimeric derivatives of the plasmid and a method of producing an infectious bovine viral diarrhea virus using the plasmid are disclosed. The invention relates to a plasmid DNA molecule that replicates easily in E. coli and contains a sufficient portion of the genome of BVDV, cloned as cDNA, to be a suitable template to produce RNA in vitro which, upon transfection into bovine cells, gives rise to infectious BVDV. The BVDV created by the process of the invention can be engineered for use as a vector in many advantageous applications

    Analytic properties of two-carousel systems

We present analytic results for warehouse systems involving pairs of carousels. Specifically, for various picking strategies, we show that the sojourn time of the picker satisfies an integral equation that is a contraction mapping. As a result, numerical approximations for performance measures such as the throughput of the system are extremely accurate and converge fast (e.g.\ within 5 iterations) to their real values. We present simulation results validating our results and examining more complicated strategies for pairs of carousels.Comment: 28 pages, 17 figure

    Get PDF
Malformations of cerebral cortical development include a wide range of developmental disorders that are common causes of neurodevelopmental delay and epilepsy. In addition, study of these disorders contributes greatly to the understanding of normal brain development and its perturbations. The rapid recent evolution of molecular biology, genetics and imaging has resulted in an explosive increase in our knowledge of cerebral cortex development and in the number and types of malformations of cortical development that have been reported. These advances continue to modify our perception of these malformations. This review addresses recent changes in our perception of these disorders and proposes a modified classification based upon updates in our knowledge of cerebral cortical development

Process Parameters Optimization Of Micro Electric Discharge Machining Process Using Genetic Algorithm

    Get PDF
Micro Electric Discharge Machining (micro EDM) is a non-traditional machining process which can be used for drilling micro holes in high strength to weight ratio materials like Titanium super alloy. However, the process control parameters of the machine have to be set at an optimal setting in order to achieve the desired responses. This present research study deals with the single and multiobjective optimization of micro EDM process using Genetic Algorithm. Mathematical models using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is used to correlate the response and the parameters. The desired responses are minimum tool wear rate and minimum overcut while the independent control parameters considered are pulse on time, peak current and flushing pressure. In the multiobjective problem, the responses conflict with each other. This research provides a Pareto optimal set of solution points where each solution is a non dominated solution among the group of predicted solution points thus allowing flexibility in operating the machine while maintaining the standard quality

Example of two different potentials which have practically the same fixed-energy phase shifts

It is shown that the Newton-Sabatier procedure for inverting the fixed-energy phase shifts for a potential is not an inversion method but a parameter-fitting procedure. Theoretically there is no guarantee that this procedure is applicable to the given set of the phase shifts, if it is applicable, there is no guaran- tee that the potential it produces generates the phase shifts from which it was reconstructed. Moreover, no generic potential, specifically, no potential which is not analytic in a neighborhood of the positive real semiaxis can be reconstructed by the Newton-Sabatier procedure. A numerical method is given for finding spherically symmetric compactly supported potentials which produce practically the same set of fixed-energy phase shifts for all values of angular momentum. Concrete example of such potentials is given

Adverse Effects of Cholinesterase Inhibitors in Dementia, According to the Pharmacovigilance Databases of the United-States and Canada.

This survey analyzes two national pharmacovigilance databases in order to determine the major adverse reactions observed with the use of cholinesterase inhibitors in dementia. We conducted a statistical analysis of the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and the Canada Vigilance Adverse Reaction Database (CVARD) concerning the side effects of cholinesterase inhibitors. The statistics calculated for each adverse event were the frequency and the reporting odds ratios (ROR). A total of 9877 and 2247 reports were extracted from the FAERS and CVARD databases, respectively. A disproportionately higher frequency of reports of death as an adverse event for rivastigmine, compared to the other acetylcholinesterase inhibiting drugs, was observed in both the FAERS (ROR = 3.42; CI95% = 2.94-3.98; P<0.0001) and CVARD (ROR = 3.67; CI95% = 1.92-7.00; P = 0.001) databases. While cholinesterase inhibitors remain to be an important therapeutic tool against Alzheimer's disease, the disproportionate prevalence of fatal outcomes with rivastigmine compared with alternatives should be taken into consideration

Membrane solitons in eight-dimensional hyper-Kaehler backgrounds

We derive the BPS equations satisfied by lump solitons in (2+1)(2+1)-dimensional sigma models with toric 8-dimensional hyper-K\"ahler (HK8{HK}_8) target spaces and check they preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. We show how these solitons are realised in M theory as M2-branes wrapping holomorphic 2-cycles in the \bE^{1,2}\times {HK}_8 background. Using the κ\kappa-symmetry of a probe M2-brane in this background we determine the supersymmetry they preserve, and note that there is a discrepancy in the fraction of supersymmetry preserved by these solitons as viewed from the low energy effective sigma model description of the M2-brane dynamics or the full M theory. Toric HK8{HK}_8 manifolds are dual to a Hanany-Witten setup of D3-branes suspended between 5-branes. In this picture the lumps correspond to vortices of the three dimensional N=3{\mathcal N}=3 or N=4{\mathcal N}=4 theory.Comment: 12+1 pages. LaTex. v2: Typos corrected and references adde

Behavioral and Environmental Determinants of Leptospirosis: A New Evidence from Klaten, Central Java Using a Path Analysis Model

Background: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects both humans and animals. Humans become infected through direct contact with the urine of infected animals or with a urine-contaminated environment. The bacteria enter the body through cuts or abrasions on the skin, or through the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and eyes. Person-to-person transmission is rare. Leptospirosis a global public health issue, with an estimated annual incidence of 0.1 to 1 case/100,000 population in moderate non-endemic area, and 10 to 100 cases/100,000 population in humid and tropical endemic areas. Indonesia is the third country in the world with the highest Leptospirosis-attributable mortality. Its fatality rate ranged from 2.5% to 16.45% with an average of 7.1%. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of Leptospirosis in Klaten, Central Java. Subjects and Method: This was a case control study conducted in Klaten, Central Java, from October to November, 2017. A sample of 49 Leptospirosis cases and 101 non-diseased controls were selected for this study by fixed disease sampling. The independent variable were employment status, history of cuts, history of water excursion, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), house condition, environmental condition, presence of mouse or cattle, history of rain or flood. The dependent variable was Leptospirosis. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by path analysis. Results: The determinants that increased the risk of Leptospirosis were history of cuts (b= 1.64; 95% CI= 0.40 to 2.87; p= 0.009), history of water excursion (b= 1.98; 95% CI = 0.52 to 3.43; p= 0.008), poor house condition (b= -1.92; 95% CI = -3.08 to -0.77; p= 0.001), and poor environmental condition (b= -2.35; 95% CI= -3.48 to -1.23; p<0.001). History of cuts increased with cattle-related work (b= 1.79; 95% CI = 0.86 to 2.72; p<0.001) and absence of PPE (b= -2.54; 95% CI= -3.49 to -1.60; p<0.001). Conclusion: The behavioral and environmental determinants that increase the risk of Leptospirosis are history of cuts, history of water excursion, poor house condition, and poor environmental condition. Keywords: determinants, behavioral, environmental, leptospirosi

The group approach to AdS space propagators: A fast algorithm

In this letter we show how the method of [4] for the calculation of two-point functions in d+1-dimensional AdS space can be simplified. This results in an algorithm for the evaluation of the two-point functions as linear combinations of Legendre functions of the second kind. This algorithm can be easily implemented on a computer. For the sake of illustration, we displayed the results for the case of symmetric traceless tensor fields with rank up to l=4.Comment: 14 pages, comment adde
