Scoping estimates of the LDEF satellite induced radioactivity
The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite was recovered after almost six years in space. It was well-instrumented with ionizing radiation dosimeters, including thermoluminescent dosimeters, plastic nuclear track detectors, and a variety of metal foil samples for measuring nuclear activation products. The extensive LDEF radiation measurements provide the type of radiation environments and effects data needed to evaluate and help resolve uncertainties in present radiation models and calculational methods. A calculational program was established to aid in LDEF data interpretation and to utilize LDEF data for assessing the accuracy of current models. A summary of the calculational approach is presented. The purpose of the reported calculations is to obtain a general indication of: (1) the importance of different space radiation sources (trapped, galactic, and albedo protons, and albedo neutrons); (2) the importance of secondary particles; and (3) the spatial dependence of the radiation environments and effects expected within the spacecraft. The calculational method uses the High Energy Transport Code (HETC) to estimate the importance of different sources and secondary particles in terms of fluence, absorbed dose in tissue and silicon, and induced radioactivity as a function of depth in aluminum
Crossing of the w=-1 barrier in viscous modified gravity
We consider a modified form of gravity in which the action contains a power
alpha of the scalar curvature. It is shown how the presence of a bulk viscosity
in a spatially flat universe may drive the cosmic fluid into the phantom region
(w<-1) and thus into a Big Rip singularity, even if it lies in the quintessence
region (w>-1) in the non-viscous case. The condition for this to occur is that
the bulk viscosity contains the power (2 alpha-1) of the scalar expansion. Two
specific examples are discussed in detail. The present paper is a
generalization of the recent investigation dealing with barrier crossing in

Arc-Length Continuation and Multigrid Techniques for Nonlinear Elliptic Eigenvalue Problems
We investigate multi-grid methods for solving linear systems arising from arc-length continuation techniques applied to nonlinear elliptic eigenvalue problems. We find that the usual multi-grid methods diverge in the neighborhood of singular points of the solution branches. As a result, the continuation method is unable to continue past a limit point in the Bratu problem. This divergence is analyzed and a modified multi-grid algorithm has been devised based on this analysis. In principle, this new multi-grid algorithm converges for elliptic systems, arbitrarily close to singularity and has been used successfully in conjunction with arc-length continuation procedures on the model problem. In the worst situation, both the storage and the computational work are only about a factor of two more than the unmodified multi-grid methods
Synthesis Imaging of Dense Molecular Gas in the N113 HII Region of the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present aperture synthesis imaging of dense molecular gas in the Large
Magellanic Cloud, taken with the prototype millimeter receivers of the
Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our observations of the N113 HII
region reveal a condensation with a size of ~6" (1.5 pc) FWHM, detected
strongly in the 1-0 lines of HCO+, HCN and HNC, and weakly in C_2H. Comparison
of the ATCA observations with single-dish maps from the Mopra Telescope and
sensitive spectra from the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope indicates that
the condensation is a massive clump of ~10^4 solar masses within a larger ~10^5
solar mass molecular cloud. The clump is centered adjacent to a compact,
obscured HII region which is part of a linear structure of radio continuum
sources extending across the molecular cloud. We suggest that the clump
represents a possible site for triggered star formation. Examining the
integrated line intensities as a function of interferometer baseline length, we
find evidence for decreasing HCO+/HCN and HCN/HNC ratios on longer baselines.
These trends are consistent with a significant component of the HCO+ emission
arising in an extended clump envelope and a lower HCN/HNC abundance ratio in
dense cores.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Ap
Species Limits and Phylogeography of North American Cricket Frogs (Acris: Hylidae)
Cricket frogs are widely distributed across the eastern United States and two species, the northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans) and the southern cricket frog (A. gryllus) are currently recognized. We generated a phylogenetic hypothesis for Acris using fragments of nuclear and mitochondrial genes in separate and combined phylogenetic analyses. We also used distance methods and fixation indices to evaluate species limits within the genus and the validity of currently recognized subspecies of A. crepitans. The distributions of existing A. crepitans subspecies, defined by morphology and call types, do not match the distributions of evolutionary lineages recovered using our genetic data. We discuss a scenario of call evolution to explain this disparity. We also recovered distinct phylogeographic groups within A. crepitans and A. gryllus that are congruent with other codistributed taxa. Under a lineage-based species concept, we recognize Acris blanchardi as a distinct species. The importance of this revised taxonomy is discussed in light of the dramatic declines in A. blanchardi across the northern and western portions of its range
