Mixed state geometric phases, entangled systems, and local unitary transformations
The geometric phase for a pure quantal state undergoing an arbitrary
evolution is a ``memory'' of the geometry of the path in the projective Hilbert
space of the system. We find that Uhlmann's geometric phase for a mixed quantal
state undergoing unitary evolution not only depends on the geometry of the path
of the system alone but also on a constrained bi-local unitary evolution of the
purified entangled state. We analyze this in general, illustrate it for the
qubit case, and propose an experiment to test this effect. We also show that
the mixed state geometric phase proposed recently in the context of
interferometry requires uni-local transformations and is therefore essentially

Modified sorting technique to mitigate the collateral mortality of trawled school prawns (Metapenaeus macleayi)
The potential for changes to onboard handling practices in order to improve the fate of juvenile school prawns (Metapenaeus macleayi) discarded during trawling were investigated in two Australian rivers (Clarence and Hunter) by comparing a purpose-built, water-filled sorting tray against a conventional dry tray across various conditions, including the range of typical delays before the start of sorting the catch (2 min vs. 15 min). Juvenile school prawns
(n= 5760), caught during 32 and 16 deployments in each river, were caged and sacrificed at four times: immediately
(T0), and at 24 (T24), 72 (T72), and 120 (T12 0) hours after having been discarded. In both rivers, most
mortalities occurred between T0 and T24 and, after adjusting for control deaths (<12%), were greatest for the
15-min conventional treatment (up to 41% at T120). Mixed-effects logistic models revealed that in addition to the sampling time, method of sorting, and delay in sorting, the weight of the catch, salinity, and percentage cloud cover were significant predictors of mortality. Although trawling
caused some mortalities and comparable stress (measured as L -lactate) in all school prawns, use of the water tray lessened the negative impacts of some of the above factors across both the 2-min and 15-min delays in sorting so that the overall discard mortality was reduced by more than a
third. When used in conjunction with selective trawls, widespread application of the water tray should help to
improve the sustainability of trawling for school prawns
Purification and correlated measurements of bipartite mixed states
We prove that all purifications of a non-factorable state (i.e., the state
which cannot be expressed in a form ) are
entangled. We also show that for any bipartite state there exists a pair of
measurements which are correlated on this state if and only if the state is

Bures geometry of the three-level quantum systems. II
For the eight-dimensional Riemannian manifold comprised by the three-level
quantum systems endowed with the Bures metric, we numerically approximate the
integrals over the manifold of several functions of the curvature and of its
(anti-)self-dual parts. The motivation for pursuing this research is to
elaborate upon the findings of Dittmann in his paper, "Yang-Mills equation and

Ultrasonic assisted milling of reinforced plastics
The milling of glass and carbon fibre reinforced plastics provides manufacturers from the automotive and aerospace industry with major challenges. The high carbon and glass fibre content increases the risk of insufficient production qualities. The abrasive fibres cause cutting edge rounding which results in the issue that the comparatively thick glass fibre cannot be reliably cut, while the carbon fiber is being less of a challenge. One approach to improve the production quality is the use of ultrasonic assisted milling. At the IWF tests have been undertaken to study the influence of ultrasonic assistance on workpiece quality, cutting forces and dust generation
Distinguishability of States and von Neumann Entropy
Consider an ensemble of pure quantum states |\psi_j>, j=1,...,n taken with
prior probabilities p_j respectively. We show that it is possible to increase
all of the pairwise overlaps || i.e. make each constituent pair
of the states more parallel (while keeping the prior probabilities the same),
in such a way that the von Neumann entropy S is increased, and dually, make all
pairs more orthogonal while decreasing S. We show that this phenomenon cannot
occur for ensembles in two dimensions but that it is a feature of almost all
ensembles of three states in three dimensions. It is known that the von Neumann
entropy characterises the classical and quantum information capacities of the
ensemble and we argue that information capacity in turn, is a manifestation of
the distinguishability of the signal states. Hence our result shows that the
notion of distinguishability within an ensemble is a global property that
cannot be reduced to considering distinguishability of each constituent pair of

Emergent Horizons in the Laboratory
The concept of a horizon known from general relativity describes the loss of
causal connection and can be applied to non-gravitational scenarios such as
out-of-equilibrium condensed-matter systems in the laboratory. This analogy
facilitates the identification and theoretical study (e.g., regarding the
trans-Planckian problem) and possibly the experimental verification of "exotic"
effects known from gravity and cosmology, such as Hawking radiation.
Furthermore, it yields a unified description and better understanding of
non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter systems and their universal
features. By means of several examples including general fluid flows, expanding
Bose-Einstein condensates, and dynamical quantum phase transitions, the
concepts of event, particle, and apparent horizons will be discussed together

Implementation of quantum maps by programmable quantum processors
A quantum processor is a device with a data register and a program register.
The input to the program register determines the operation, which is a
completely positive linear map, that will be performed on the state in the data
register. We develop a mathematical description for these devices, and apply it
to several different examples of processors. The problem of finding a processor
that will be able to implement a given set of mappings is also examined, and it
is shown that while it is possible to design a finite processor to realize the
phase-damping channel, it is not possible to do so for the amplitude-damping

Geometric phases for non-degenerate and degenerate mixed states
This paper focuses on the geometric phase of general mixed states under
unitary evolution. Here we analyze both non-degenerate as well as degenerate
states. Starting with the non-degenerate case, we show that the usual procedure
of subtracting the dynamical phase from the total phase to yield the geometric
phase for pure states, does not hold for mixed states. To this end, we furnish
an expression for the geometric phase that is gauge invariant. The parallelity
conditions are shown to be easily derivable from this expression. We also
extend our formalism to states that exhibit degeneracies. Here with the
holonomy taking on a non-abelian character, we provide an expression for the
geometric phase that is manifestly gauge invariant. As in the case of the
non-degenerate case, the form also displays the parallelity conditions clearly.
Finally, we furnish explicit examples of the geometric phases for both the
non-degenerate as well as degenerate mixed states.Comment: 23 page
