    Voluntary agreements and competition law

Many voluntary agreements (VA's) fall under the European or Dutch cartel prohibition (Article 81 EC, Article 6 Mededingingswet). This paper starts with an abstract description of the relation between competition and environmental protection. Particular attention is paid to the role in this relation of the "integration" and "polluter pays" principles enshrined in, respectively, Article 6 and 175 EC. After that it describes current European and Dutch competition policy vis a vis VA's. The paper concludes with some recommendations of what competition policy as regards VA's should be. These recommendations are primarily based on legal reasoning

Helping behaviour during cooperative learning and learning gains

Is helping behaviour (i.e., solicited help and peer tutoring) during cooperative learning (CL) related to subsequent learning gains? And can teachers influence pupils’ helping behaviour? One hundred one 5th grade pupils from multiethnic schools, 10-12 years old, participated in the study. Forty two pupils (31 immigrant) worked in an experimental condition, characterized by the stimulation of solicited high quality help and 59 (24 immigrant) worked in a control condition. It was found that learning gains were predicted positively by pupils’ unsolicited helping behaviour (i.e., peer tutoring) and negatively by solicited help. Furthermore, teachers were able to affect pupils’ low quality solicited help only. Lastly, immigrant pupils used less helping behaviour than local pupils, irrespective of CL setting

This project investigated how NoSQL databases can be used together with a logical layer, instead of a relational database with separated backend logic, to search for products with customer specific constraints in an e-commerce scenario. The motivation behind moving from a relational database was the scalability issues and increased read latencies experienced as the data increased. The work resulted in a framework called Cauldron that uses pipelines a sequence of execution steps to expose its data stored in an in-memory key-value store and a document database. Cauldron uses write replication between distributed instances to increase read throughput at the cost of write latency. A product database with customer specific constraints was implemented using Cauldron to compare it against an existing solution based on a relational database. The new product database can serve search queries 10 times faster in the general case and up to 25 times faster in extreme cases compared to the existing solution.

The micrometeoroid complex and evolution of the lunar regolith

    Get PDF
The interaction of the micrometeoroid complex with the lunar surface is evidenced by numerous glass-lined microcraters on virtually every lunar surface exposed to space. Such craters range in size from less than .1 micron to approximately 2 sq cm diameter. Using small scale laboratory cratering experiments for calibration, the observed crater-sized frequency distributions may be converted into micrometeoroid mass distributions. These lunar mass distributions are in essential agreement with satellite data. Some physical properties of micrometeoroids may be deduced by comparing lunar crater geometries with those obtained in laboratory experiments. The proponderance of circular outlines of lunar microcraters necessitates equidimensional, if not spherical, micrometeoroids

SOCIAL CLASS AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR: SUGGESTIONS FOR THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT

    Get PDF
Sociological theories which posit an inverse causal relationship between social class and deviant behavior are able to coexist with other sociological theories stressing a positive relationship between social class and deviance because of the present theoretical and empirical inability to distinguish between them. In order to resolve this dilemma, class-deviance theorists are advised to restrict their concern to behaviors that show promise of class linkage, to specify limiting conditions in the formation of propositions, and to entertain reasonable alternative explanations. Methodologists could also profit by employing multiple measures of the class variable, by utilizing a more precise cutting point strategy with respect to class, and by using both self-report and official indicators of deviance.http://web.ku.edu/~starjrn

The Academics Athletics Trade-off: Universities and Intercollegiate Athletics

    Get PDF
This analysis focuses on several key issues in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The intrinsic benefits of athletic programs are discussed in the first section. Trends in graduation rates and academic performance among athletes and how they correlate with the general student body are discussed in the second section. Finally, an overview of the revenues and expenses of athletic department budgets are discussed in an effort to gain a better understanding of the allocation of funds to athletics. In spite of recent growth in revenues and expenses, the athletic department budget comprises on average only 5 percent of the entire university budget at an FBS school, though spending and revenues have increased dramatically in recent years. In the grand scheme of things, American higher education faces several other, arguably more pressing, areas of reform. However, athletics is a significant and growing dimension of higher education that warrants in-depth examination
