Distribution of compact object mergers around galaxies
Compact object mergers are one of the currently favored models for the origin
of GRBs. The discovery of optical afterglows and identification of the nearest,
presumably host, galaxies allows the analysis of the distribution of burst
sites with respect to these galaxies. Using a model of stellar binary evolution
we synthesize a population of compact binary systems which merge within the
Hubble time. We include the kicks in the supernovae explosions and calculate
orbits of these binaries in galactic gravitational potentials. We present the
resulting distribution of merger sites and discuss the results in the framework
of the observed GRB afterglows.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRA
Eclipsing binaries in open clusters. III. V621 Per in chi Persei
V621 Persei is a detached eclipsing binary in the open cluster chi Persei
which is composed of an early B-type giant star and a main sequence secondary
component. From high-resolution spectroscopic observations and radial
velocities from the literature, we determine the orbital period to be 25.5 days
and the primary velocity semiamplitude to be K = 64.5 +/- 0.4 km/s. No trace of
the secondary star has been found in the spectrum. We solve the discovery light
curves of this totally-eclipsing binary and find that the surface gravity of
the secondary star is log(g_B) = 4.244 +/- 0.054 (cm/s). We compare the
absolute masses and radii of the two stars in the mass--radius diagram, for
different possible values of the primary surface gravity, to the predictions of
stellar models. We find that log(g_A) is approximately 3.55, in agreement with
values found from fitting Balmer lines with synthetic profiles. The expected
masses of the two stars are 12 Msun and 6 Msun, and the expected radii are 10
Rsun and 3 Rsun. The primary component is near the blue loop stage in its

Binary Population Synthesis: Methods, Normalization, and Surprises
In this paper we present a brief overview of population synthesis methods
with a discussion of their main advantages and disadvantages. In the second
part, we present some recent results from synthesis models of close binary
compact objects with emphasis on the predicted rates, their uncertainties, and
the model input parameters the rates are most sensitive to. We also report on a
new evolutionary path leading to the formation of close double neutron stars
(NS), with the unique characteristic that none of the two NS ever had the
chance to be recycled by accretion. Their formation rates turn out to be
comparable to or maybe even higher than those of recycled NS-NS binaries (like
the ones observed), but their detection probability as binary pulsars is much
smaller because of their short lifetimes. We discuss the implications of such a
population for gravitational-wave detection of NS-NS inspiral events, and

Boron Abundances in Main Sequence B-type Stars: A Test of Rotational Depletion during Main Sequence Evolution
Boron abundances have been derived for seven main sequence B-type stars from
HST STIS spectra around the B III 2066 A line. In two stars, boron appears to
be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star,
boron is detectable but it is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron
is undetectable implying depletions of 1 to 2 dex. Three of these four stars
are nitrogen enriched, but the fourth shows no enrichment of nitrogen. Only
rotationally induced mixing predicts that boron depletions are unaccompanied by
nitrogen enrichments. The inferred rate of boron depletion from our
observations is in good agreement with these predictions. Other boron-depleted
nitrogen-normal stars are identified from the literature. Also, several
boron-depleted nitrogen-rich stars are identified, and while all fall on the
boron-nitrogen trend predicted by rotationally-induced mixing, a majority have
nitrogen enrichments that are not uniquely explained by rotation.
The spectra have also been used to determine iron-group (Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni)
abundances. The seven B-type stars have near solar iron-group abundances, as
expected for young stars in the solar neighborhood. We have also analysed the
halo B-type star, PG0832+676. We find [Fe/H] = -0.88 +/- 0.10, and the absence
of the B III line gives the upper limit [B/H]<2.5. These and other published

Mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V selectively laser melted parts with body-centred-cubic lattices of varying cell size
Significant weight savings in parts can be made through the use of additive manufacture (AM), a process which enables the construction of more complex geometries, such as functionally graded lattices, than can be achieved conventionally. The existing framework describing the mechanical properties of lattices places strong emphasis on one property, the relative density of the repeating cells, but there are other properties to consider if lattices are to be used effectively. In this work, we explore the effects of cell size and number of cells, attempting to construct more complete models for the mechanical performance of lattices. This was achieved by examining the modulus and ultimate tensile strength of latticed tensile specimens with a range of unit cell sizes and fixed relative density. Understanding how these mechanical properties depend upon the lattice design variables is crucial for the development of design tools, such as finite element methods, that deliver the best performance from AM latticed parts. We observed significant reductions in modulus and strength with increasing cell size, and these reductions cannot be explained by increasing strut porosity as has previously been suggested. We obtained power law relationships for the mechanical properties of the latticed specimens as a function of cell size, which are similar in form to the existing laws for the relative density dependence. These can be used to predict the properties of latticed column structures comprised of body-centred-cubic (BCC) cells, and may also be adapted for other part geometries. In addition, we propose a novel way to analyse the tensile modulus data, which considers a relative lattice cell size rather than an absolute size. This may lead to more general models for the mechanical properties of lattice structures, applicable to parts of varying size
Specialty-based, voluntary incident reporting in neonatal intensive care: description of 4846 incident reports
OBJECTIVES: To examine the characteristics of incidents reported after introduction of a voluntary, non-punitive incident reporting system for neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in the Netherlands; and to investigate which types of reported incident pose the highest risk to patients in the NICU. DESIGN: Prospective multicentre survey. METHODS: Voluntary, non-punitive incident reporting was introduced in eight level III NICUs and one paediatric surgical ICU. An incident was defined as any unintended event which (could have) reduced the safety margin for the patient. Multidisciplinary, unit-based patient safety committees systematically collected and analysed incident reports, and assigned risk scores to each reported incident. Data were centrally collected for specialty-based analysis. This paper describes the characteristics of incidents reported during the first year. Bivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify high-risk incident categories. RESULTS: There were 5225 incident reports on 3859 admissions, of which 4846 were eligible for analysis. Incidents with medication were most frequently reported (27%), followed by laboratory (10%) and enteral nutrition (8%). Severe harm was described in seven incident reports, and moderate harm in 63 incident reports. Incidents involving mechanical ventilation and blood products were most likely to be assigned high-risk scores, followed by those involving parenteral nutrition, intravascular lines and medication dosing errors. CONCLUSIONS: Incidents occur much more frequently in Dutch NICUs than has been previously observed, and their impact on patient morbidity is considerable. Reported incidents concerning mechanical ventilation, blood products, intravascular lines, parenteral nutrition and medication dosing errors pose the highest risk to patients in the NIC
Numerical study of wetting transitions on biomimetic surfaces using a lattice Boltzmann approach with large density ratio
The hydrophobicity of natural surfaces have drawn much attention of scientific communities in recent years. By mimicking natural surfaces, the manufactured biomimetic hydrophobic surfaces have been widely applied to green technologies such as self-cleaning surfaces. Although the theories for wetting and hydrophobicity have been developed, the mechanism of wetting transitions between heterogeneous wetting state and homogeneous wetting state is still not fully clarified. As understanding of wetting transitions is crucial for manufacturing a biomimetic superhydrophobic surface, more fundamental discussions in this area should be carried out. In the present work the wetting transitions are numerically studied using a phase field lattice Boltzmann approach with large density ratio, which should be helpful in understanding the mechanism of wetting transitions. The dynamic wetting transition processes between Cassie-Baxter state and Wenzel state are presented, and the energy barrier and the gravity effect on transition are discussed. It is found that the two wetting transition processes are irreversible for specific inherent contact angles and have different transition routes, the energy barrier exists on an ideally patterned surface and the gravity can be crucial to overcome the energy barrier and trigger the transition

Producing Crack-Free, High Density M2 HSS Parts by Selective Laser Melting: Pre-Heating the Baseplate
Cracks and delamination, resulting from residual stresses are a barrier in the world of Additive
Manufacturing and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) that prohibits the use of many metals in this field. By preheating the baseplate, thermal gradients are lowered and stresses can be reduced. In this work, some initial tests
were performed with M2 Tool Steel. Results show that pre-heating enables the production of dense M2 parts.
The influence of pre-heating on density and mechanical and physical properties is investigated. The paper
shows many promising results for the production of SLM parts in materials that are very sensitive to crack
formation and delamination. When using a pre-heating of 200°C, crack-free parts were produced with a relative

Generation of human vascular smooth muscle subtypes provides insight into embryological origin-dependent disease susceptibility.
Heterogeneity of embryological origins is a hallmark of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and may influence the development of vascular disease. Differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into developmental origin-specific SMC subtypes remains elusive. Here we describe a chemically defined protocol in which hPSCs were initially induced to form neuroectoderm, lateral plate mesoderm or paraxial mesoderm. These intermediate populations were further differentiated toward SMCs (>80% MYH11(+) and ACTA2(+)), which displayed contractile ability in response to vasoconstrictors and invested perivascular regions in vivo. Derived SMC subtypes recapitulated the unique proliferative and secretory responses to cytokines previously documented in studies using aortic SMCs of distinct origins. Notably, this system predicted increased extracellular matrix degradation by SMCs derived from lateral plate mesoderm, which was confirmed using rat aortic SMCs from corresponding origins. This differentiation approach will have broad applications in modeling origin-dependent disease susceptibility and in developing bioengineered vascular grafts for regenerative medicine
Let's talk about sex! Why should healthcare professionals address sexual distress in breast cancer patients and survivors?
Purpose: Sexual distress impacts the quality of life (QoL) of breast cancer patients but is often overlooked in standard care pathways. This study evaluated the prevalence and factors of sexual distress among Dutch breast cancer patients, compared them to the general population, and explored how sexual distress is discussed in clinical settings from the perspectives of patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs). Methods: Questionnaires containing the Female Sexual Distress Scale (FSDS) and demographic variables were distributed to women with breast cancer. The effect of breast cancer on sexual distress was assessed with a Mann-Whitney U test. Multivariable linear regression was used to analyze variables associated with FSDS. The Sexuality Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (SABS) was sent to HCPs. Results: Breast cancer patients reported significantly higher sexual distress compared to a Dutch non-breast cancer cohort, respectively 16.38 (SD 11.81) and 23.35 (SD 11.39). Factors associated with higher sexual distress were psychological comorbidities, the body image scale, and being diagnosed >10 years ago. Sexual distress was not discussed as often as patients needed. Barriers to addressing sexual distress were time constraints, HCPs’ confidence in their ability to address sexual distress, and uncertainty about who is responsible for initiation. Conclusions: Breast cancer patients showed significantly higher sexual distress compared to the Dutch population. However, it was not frequently addressed in the consultation room. While some barriers have been identified, this study highlights the importance of further exploring obstacles to integrating discussions about sexual distress into routine care to improve QoL of breast cancer patients.</p
