Alcohol use in fishing communities and men's willingness to participate in an alcohol, violence and HIV risk reduction intervention: qualitative findings from Rakai, Uganda.
Alcohol use, intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV infection are associated, but few programmes and interventions have addressed their synergistic relationship or been evaluated for effectiveness and acceptability. This is a critical gap in populations with high rates of alcohol use, HIV and IPV, such as Uganda's fishing communities. This study examined drinking norms, barriers and facilitators to engagement in a risk reduction programme, and ideas for tailoring. Results showed that alcohol use is common in fishing villages. While men and women drink, gendered notions of femininity deem alcohol largely unacceptable for women. Plastic sachets of liquor were the most common alcoholic drink. Participants did not understand the definition of 'hazardous drinking', but recognised connections between drinking, violence and sexual risk-taking. The idea of an alcohol, IPV and HIV risk reduction intervention was supported, but barriers need to be addressed, including how best to help those uninterested in reducing their drinking, addressing normalisation of drinking and how best to inform those who truly need intervention. Intervention to people living with HIV around the time of diagnosis and treatment may be warranted. Study findings highlight the potential to integrate alcohol and IPV reduction programmes into an HIV service provision
Addressing Intimate Partner Violence Among Female Clients Accessing HIV Testing and Counseling Services: Pilot Testing Tools in Rakai, Uganda.
The World Health Organization recommends that HIV counseling and testing (HCT) programs implement strategies to address how intimate partner violence (IPV) influences women's ability to protect themselves from and seek care and treatment for HIV infection. We discuss the process used to adapt a screening and brief intervention (SBI) for female clients of HCT services in Rakai, Uganda-a setting with high prevalence of both HIV and IPV. By outlining our collaborative process for adapting and implementing the SBI in Rakai and training counselors for its use, we hope other HCT programs will consider replicating the approach in their settings
Limits on the Boron Isotopic Ratio in HD 76932
Data in the 2090 A B region of HD 76932 have been obtained at high S/N using
the HST GHRS echelle at a resolution of 90,000. This wavelength region has been
previously identified as a likely candidate for observing the B11/B10 isotopic
splitting.
The observations do not match a calculated line profile extremely well at any
abundance for any isotopic ratio. If the B abundance previously determined from
observations at 2500 A is assumed, the calculated line profile is too weak,
indicating a possible blending line. Assuming that the absorption at 2090 A is
entirely due to boron, the best-fit total B abundance is higher than but
consistent with that obtained at 2500 A, and the best-fit isotopic ratio
(B11/B10) is in the range ~10:1 to ~4:1. If the absorption is not entirely due
to B and there is an unknown blend, the best-fit isotopic ratio may be closer
to 1:1. Future observations of a similar metal-poor star known to have
unusually low B should allow us to distinguish between these two possibilities.
The constraints that can be placed on the isotopic ratio based on comparisons
with similar observations of HD 102870 and HD 61421 (Procyon) are also

The Effect of the Environment on alpha-Al_2O_3 (0001) Surface Structures
We report that calculating the Gibbs free energy of the alpha-Al_2O_3 (0001)
surfaces in equilibrium with a realistic environment containing both oxygen and
hydrogen species is essential for obtaining theoretical predictions consistent
with experimental observations. Using density-functional theory we find that
even under conditions of high oxygen partial pressure, the metal terminated
surface is surprisingly stable. An oxygen terminated alpha-Al_2O_3 (0001)
surface becomes stable only if hydrogen is present on the surface. In addition,
including hydrogen on the surface resolves discrepancies between previous
theoretical work and experimental results with respect to the magnitude and

Carbon Nanotubes by a CVD Method. Part II: Formation of Nanotubes from (Mg, Fe)O Catalysts
The aim of this paper is to study the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from different Fe/MgO oxide powders that were prepared by combustion synthesis and characterized in detail in a companion paper. Depending on the synthesis conditions, several iron species are present in the starting oxides including Fe2+ ions, octahedral Fe3+ ions, Fe3+ clusters, and MgFe2O4-like nanoparticles. Upon reduction during heating at 5 °C/min up to 1000 °C in H2/CH4 of the oxide powders, the octahedral Fe3+ ions tend to form Fe2+ ions, which are not likely to be reduced to metallic iron whereas the MgFe2O4-like particles are directly reduced to metallic iron. The reduced phases are R-Fe, Fe3C, and ç-Fe-C. Fe3C appears as the postreaction phase involved in the formation of carbon filaments (CNTs and thick carbon nanofibers). Thick carbon nanofibers are formed from catalyst particles originating from poorly dispersed species (Fe3+ clusters and MgFe2O4-like particles). The nanofiber outer diameter is determined by the particle size. The reduction of the iron ions and clusters that are well dispersed in the MgO lattice leads to small catalytic particles (<5 nm), which tend to form SWNTS and DWNTs with an inner diameter close to 2 nm. Well-dispersed MgFe2O4-like particles can also be reduced to small metal particles with a narrow size distribution, producing SWNTs and DWNTs. The present results will help in tailoring oxide precursors for the controlled formation of CNTs
Heads up! Dynamic Similitude for Perception with an Object Wielded by Head or Hand
Possibilities for behavior (i.e., affordances) can be perceived with units spanning anatomical components and external objects. For example, affordances for standing on an inclined surface can be perceived with an object held in the hand or attached to the head. We investigated whether these two person-plus-object perceptual systems exhibit the same pattern of nonlinear phase transitions in perception of this affordance. Blindfolded participants explored an inclined surface with a rod held in the hand or attached to the head and reported whether they could stand on that surface. Inclinations were presented in ascending or descending sequences. In both conditions, responses exhibited negative hysteresis – perceptual boundaries occurred at steeper angles for descending than for ascending sequences. The generalization of this pattern across components that differ in physiology, sensitivity, and experience is consistent with both the soft assembly of perceptual devices and with a dynamical systems perspective on perception of affordances

Created Stepping-Stone Configurations Depend on Task Constraints
Previous studies have shown that choices about how to configure stepping-stones to be used as playground or exercise equipment reflect a person’s action capabilities. In two experiments, we investigated whether choices about how to configure stepping-stones to be used as a path for locomotion additionally reflect the goals for which or the constraints under which the path is to be used. In Experiment 1, participants created stepping-stone configurations (with rubber mats) that would allow them to cross a given space quickly, comfortably, or carefully. Configurations in the “Quickly” condition consisted of fewer mats, and longer mean (linear) distances between mats, and greater “challenge” (relative to maximum stepping distance) than in the other two conditions. In Experiment 2, participants created stepping-stone configurations that would be fun to use or that would be easy to use to cross a given space. Configurations in the “Fun” condition consisted of more mats, longer linear distances between mats, and greater “challenge” than those in the “Easy” condition. Moreover, paths in the “Fun” condition were also wider, longer, and exhibited larger changes in distances and angles between consecutive mats than in the “Easy” condition. The results are discussed both in terms of implications for understanding affordances and for the design of stepping-stone paths
