Host Country Financial Development and MNC Activity
We present evidence that the level of financial development in FDI recipient countries systematically aects the spatial distribution of multinational corporations' (MNCs) sales. Using detailed proprietary survey data collected by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on US multinational activity abroad, we find that stronger financial development in the host country has a negative effect on the share of MNC affiliate sales that remain in the host country, indicating a reduced propensity towards horizontal FDI. Conversely, the share of affiliate sales that is re-exported to third-country destinations increases, suggesting an increased propensity towards export-platform FDI. We provide a three-country model with heterogenous firms that rationalizes these observations : More financially developed host countries foster entry by domestic firms, making the local market more competitive for MNC products. This leads MNCs to orient their affiliates away from servicing the local market towards third-country markets instead.
Levels of genetic polymorphism: marker loci versus quantitative traits
Species are the units used to measure ecological diversity and alleles are the units of genetic diversity. Genetic variation within and among species has been documented most extensively using allozyme electrophoresis. This reveals wide differences in genetic variability within, and genetic distances among, species, demonstrating that species are not equivalent units of diversity. The extent to which the pattern observed for allozymes can be used to infer patterns of genetic variation in quantitative traits depends on the forces generating and maintaining variability. Allozyme variation is probably not strictly neutral but, nevertheless, heterozygosity is expected to be influenced by population size and genetic distance will be affected by time since divergence. The same is true for quantitative traits influenced by many genes and under weak stabilizing selection. However, the limited data available suggest that allozyme variability is a poor predictor of genetic variation in quantitative traits within populations. It is a better predictor of general phenotypic divergence and of postzygotic isolation between populations or species, but is only weakly correlated with prezygotic isolation. Studies of grasshopper and planthopper mating signal variation and assortative mating illustrate how these characters evolve independently of general genetic and morphological variation. The role of such traits in prezygotic isolation, and hence speciation, means that they will contribute significantly to the diversity of levels of genetic variation within and among species
Surface width scaling in noise reduced Eden clusters
The surface width scaling of Eden A clusters grown from a single aggregate
site on the square lattice is investigated as a function of the noise reduction
parameter. A two-exponent scaling ansatz is introduced and used to fit the
results from simulations covering the range from fully stochastic to the

The Effect of LHC Jet Data on MSTW PDFs
We consider the effect on LHC jet cross sections on partons distribution
functions (PDFs), in particular the MSTW2008 set of PDFs. We first compare the
published inclusive jet data to the predictions using MSTW2008, finding a very
good description. We also use the parton distribution reweighting procedure to
estimate the impact of these new data on the PDFs, finding that the combined
ATLAS 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV data, and CMS 7 TeV data have some significant impact.
We then also investigate the impact of ATLAS, CMS and D0 dijet data using the
same techniques. In this case we investigate the effect of using different
scale choices for the NLO cross section calculation. We find that the dijet
data is generally not completely compatible with the corresponding inclusive
jet data, often tending to pull PDFs, particularly the gluon distribution, away
from the default values. However, the effect depends on the dijet data set used
as well as the scale choice. We also note that conclusions may be affected by
limiting the pull on the data luminosity chosen by the best fit, which is
sometimes a number of standard deviations. Finally we include the inclusive jet
data in a new PDF fit explicitly. This enables us to check the consistency of
the exact result with that obtained from the reweighting procedure. There is
generally good, but not full quantitative agreement. Hence, the conclusion
remains that MSTW2008 PDFs already fit the published jet data well, but the
central values and uncertainties are altered and improved respectively by

The stratigraphy of the Sterkfontein hominid deposit and its relationship to the underground cave system
A programme of orientated core drilling was carried out during 1989 to elucidate stratigraphic relationships within the Sterkfontein Formation and to obtain a representative suite of samples for palaeomagnetic analysis. The cores have revealed that the hominid-bearing cave deposits occur as a continuous succession comprising 6 Members and extending to a maximum depth of about 30 m below present surface. Of these Member I (comprising a sterile, residual fill) and Member 3 are the most extensive. This sequence has been displaced vertically downwards within a zone of decalcification coinciding with the central part of the deposit. This zone has been the focus of recent deep excavations at the site. The results of the drilling, in conjunction with recent surveys of the underground cave system, confirm that a dolomite floor existed at an average depth of about 20 m at the time offirst cave filling. Subsequent cavern development down to depths in excess of 50 m caused the local collapse of some lower units of the Sterkfontein Formation and, as new openings developed to the surface, permitted the ingress of younger fills below the base of the hominid-bearing succession

Secure, performance-oriented data management for nanoCMOS electronics
The EPSRC pilot project Meeting the Design Challenges of nanoCMOS Electronics (nanoCMOS) is focused upon delivering a production level e-Infrastructure to meet the challenges facing the semiconductor industry in dealing with the next generation of ‘atomic-scale’ transistor devices. This scale means that previous assumptions on the uniformity of transistor devices in electronics circuit and systems design are no longer valid, and the industry as a whole must deal with variability throughout the design process. Infrastructures to tackle this problem must provide seamless access to very large HPC resources for computationally expensive simulation of statistic ensembles of microscopically varying physical devices, and manage the many hundreds of thousands of files and meta-data associated with these simulations. A key challenge in undertaking this is in protecting the intellectual property associated with the data, simulations and design process as a whole. In this paper we present the nanoCMOS infrastructure and outline an evaluation undertaken on the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) and the Andrew File System (AFS) considering in particular the extent that they meet the performance and security requirements of the nanoCMOS domain. We also describe how metadata management is supported and linked to simulations and results in a scalable and secure manner
Decision making strategies used by experts and the potential for training intuitive skills: A preliminary study
Duration of untreated psychosis and social function: 1-year follow-up study of first-episode schizophrenia.
BACKGROUND: In first-episode schizophrenia, longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) predicts poorer outcomes. AIMS: To address whether the relationship between DUP and outcome is a direct causal one or the result of association between symptoms and/or cognitive functioning and social functioning at the same time point. METHOD: Symptoms, social function and cognitive function were assessed in 98 patients with first-episode schizphrenia at presentation and 1 year later. RESULTS: There was no significant clinical difference between participants with short and long DUP at presentation. Linear regression analyses revealed that longer DUP significantly predicted more severe positive and negative symptoms and poorer social function at 1 year, independent of scores at presentation. Path analyses revealed independent direct relationships between DUP and social function, core negative symptoms and positive symptoms. There was no significant association between DUP and cognition. CONCLUSIONS: Longer DUP predicts poor social function independently of symptoms. The findings underline the importance of taking account of the phenomenological overlap between measures of negative symptoms and social function when investigating the effects of DUP
