However, approaches using model systems need to be complemented by comparative studies for us to gain a deeper understanding of the functional properties and evolution of developmental processes. New model organisms need to be established to enable such comparative work. The establishment of new model system requires a detailed description of its life cycle and development. The resulting staging scheme is essential for providing morphological context for molecular studies, and allows us to homologise developmental processes between species. In this paper, we provide a staging scheme and morphological characterisation of the life cycle for an emerging non-drosophilid dipteran model system: the scuttle fly Megaselia abdita. We pay particular attention to early embryogenesis (cleavage and blastoderm stages up to gastrulation), the formation and retraction of extraembryonic tissues, and the determination and formation of germ (pole) cells. However, studies in model species need to be complemented by comparative studies if we are to fully understand the functional properties and evolutionary history of developmental processes. The establishment of new model organisms is crucial for this purpose. One of the first essential steps to establish a species as an experimental model is to carefully describe its life cycle and development. The resulting staging scheme serves as a framework for molecular studies, and allows us to homologise developmental processes between species. In this paper, we have characterised the life cycle and development of an emerging non-drosophilid dipteran model system: the moth midge Clogmia albipunctata. In particular, we focus on early embryogenesis (cleavage and blastoderm cycles before gastrulation), on formation and retraction of extraembryonic tissues, and on formation of the germ line. Considering the large evolutionary distance between the two species (approximately 250 million years), we find that the development of C. albipunctata is remarkably conserved compared to D. melanogaster. On the other hand, we detect significant differences in morphology and timing affecting the development of extraembryonic tissues and the germ line.     A Case of Multiple Stun Attempts in a Bovine Due to Chronic Disease Process Causing Cranial Abnormalities

    The preslaughter stunning of bovine animals is a legal requirement in the European Union, unless the animal is being slaughtered according to religious rite. The legislation also requires the investigation and review of stunning methods in cases of failure to stun. This paper presents the results of one investigation into the possible reasons for multiple stun attempts on an animal that received five shot applications. The head was hard frozen to prevent the deformation of brain structures during splitting along the sagittal plane, and then underwent macroscopic examination to assess the likely causes of the repeated stun attempts. In this case, a pre-existing chronic disease process produced anatomical variations of the cranial cavity, increasing the thickness of the sinuses of the frontal bone to a depth of 9 cm and filling the sinuses with a fibrinous pus deposit. It was therefore concluded that the anatomical variation produced by the chronic disease process, in addition to the energy absorption provided by the thicker hide and fibrinous pus, led to the failure of the stunning equipment to achieve the desired stunned state in the animal. As the animal displayed cranial variation before slaughter, a review of the stunning systems should include a requirement that animals displaying any abnormalities should be stunned with the highest-powered cartridge available or a free bullet

    Measurement of the branching ratio of the decay Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}

    From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu} candidates with a background contamination of 30.8±4.230.8 \pm 4.2 events. From this sample, the BR(Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}) is measured to be (2.17±0.32stat±0.17syst)×106(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}

    The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4K_{e4} modes: Ke4(+)K_{e4}(+-) (K±π+πe±νK^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu) and Ke4(00)K_{e4}(00) (K±π0π0e±νK^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 K±π±γγK^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented.     Measurement of K^0_e3 form factors

    The semileptonic decay of the neutral K meson, KL -> pi e nu (Ke3), was used to study the strangeness-changing weak interaction of hadrons. A sample of 5.6 million reconstructed events recorded by the NA48 experiment was used to measure the Dalitz plot density. Admitting all possible Lorentz-covariant couplings, the form factors for vector (f_+(q^2)), scalar (f_S) and tensor (f_T) interactions were measured. The linear slope of the vector form factor lambda_+ = 0.0284+-0.0007+-0.0013 and values for the ratios |f_S/f_+(0)| = 0.015^{+0.007}_{-0.010}+-0.012 and |f_T/f_+(0)| = 0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.04}+-0.03 were obtained. The values for f_S and f_T are consistent with zero. Assuming only Vector-Axial vector couplings, lambda_+ = 0.0288+-0.0004+-0.0011 and a good fit consistent with pure V-A couplings were obtained. Alternatively, a fit to a dipole form factor yields a pole mass of M = 859+-18 MeV, consistent with the K^*(892) mass.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Search for the rare decays B0J/ψγB^{0}\to J/\psi \gamma and Bs0J/ψγB^{0}_{s} \to J/\psi \gamma

    A search for the rare decay of a B0B^{0} or Bs0B^{0}_{s} meson into the final state J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb1^{-1}. The observed number of signal candidates is consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Branching fraction values larger than 1.7×1061.7\times 10^{-6} for the B0J/ψγB^{0}\to J/\psi\gamma decay mode are excluded at 90% confidence level. For the Bs0J/ψγB^{0}_{s}\to J/\psi\gamma decay mode, branching fraction values larger than 7.4×1067.4\times 10^{-6} are excluded at 90% confidence level, this is the first branching fraction limit for this decay.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lhcbproject.web.cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/LHCbProjectPublic/LHCb-PAPER-2015-044.htm

    A model-independent confirmation of the Z(4430)Z(4430)^- state

    The decay B0ψ(2S)K+πB^0\to \psi(2S) K^+\pi^- is analyzed using 3 fb1\rm 3~fb^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the ψ(2S)π\psi(2S) \pi mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the KπK\pi mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the ψ(2S)π\psi(2S)\pi mass spectrum can be described in terms of KπK\pi reflections alone is rejected with more than 8σ\sigma significance.     A study of CPCP violation in BDhB^\mp \rightarrow Dh^\mp (h=K,πh=K,\pi) with the modes DKπ±π0D \rightarrow K^\mp \pi^\pm \pi^0, Dπ+ππ0D \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 and DK+Kπ0D \rightarrow K^+K^-\pi^0

    An analysis of the decays of BDKB^\mp \rightarrow D K^\mp and BDπB^\mp \rightarrow D \pi^\mp is presented in which the DD meson is reconstructed in the three-body final states Kπ±π0K^\mp \pi^\pm \pi^0, π+ππ0\pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0 and K+Kπ0K^+ K^- \pi^0. Using data from LHCb corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb1^{-1} of pppp collisions, measurements of several CPCP observables are performed. First observations are obtained of the suppressed ADS decay B[πK±π0]DπB^\mp \rightarrow [\pi^\mp K^\pm \pi^0]_D \pi^\mp and the quasi-GLW decay B[K+Kπ0]DπB^\mp \rightarrow [K^+ K^- \pi^0]_D \pi^\mp. The results are interpreted in the context of the unitarity triangle angle γ\gamma and related parameters
