Phase of beta-frequency tACS over primary motor cortex modulates corticospinal excitability
The assessment of corticospinal excitability by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation-induced motor evoked potentials is an established diagnostic tool in neurophysiology and a widely used procedure in fundamental brain research. However, concern about low reliability of these measures has grown recently. One possible cause of high variability of MEPs under identical acquisition conditions could be the influence of oscillatory neuronal activity on corticospinal excitability. Based on research showing that transcranial alternating current stimulation can entrain neuronal oscillations we here test whether alpha or beta frequency tACS can influence corticospinal excitability in a phase-dependent manner. We applied tACS at individually calibrated alpha- and beta-band oscillation frequencies, or we applied sham tACS. Simultaneous single TMS pulses time locked to eight equidistant phases of the ongoing tACS signal evoked MEPs. To evaluate offline effects of stimulation frequency, MEP amplitudes were measured before and after tACS. To evaluate whether tACS influences MEP amplitude, we fitted one-cycle sinusoids to the average MEPs elicited at the different phase conditions of each tACS frequency. We found no frequency-specific offline effects of tACS. However, beta-frequency tACS modulation of MEPs was phase-dependent. Post hoc analyses suggested that this effect was specific to participants with low (<19 Hz) intrinsic beta frequency. In conclusion, by showing that beta tACS influences MEP amplitude in a phase-dependent manner, our results support a potential role attributed to neuronal oscillations in regulating corticospinal excitability. Moreover, our findings may be useful for the development of TMS protocols that improve the reliability of MEPs as a meaningful tool for research applications or for clinical monitoring and diagnosis. Super Stability of Laminar Vortex Flow in Superfluid 3He-B
Vortex flow remains laminar up to large Reynolds numbers (Re~1000) in a
cylinder filled with 3He-B. This is inferred from NMR measurements and
numerical vortex filament calculations where we study the spin up and spin down
responses of the superfluid component, after a sudden change in rotation
velocity. In normal fluids and in superfluid 4He these responses are turbulent.
In 3He-B the vortex core radius is much larger which reduces both surface
pinning and vortex reconnections, the phenomena, which enhance vortex bending
and the creation of turbulent tangles. Thus the origin for the greater
stability of vortex flow in 3He-B is a quantum phenomenon. Only large flow
perturbations are found to make the responses turbulent, such as the walls of a
cubic container or the presence of invasive measuring probes inside the

This paper discusses an incident that occurred in Belgium during winter 2009-2010, after which many honey bee colonies have been lost. Later analyses showed that these colonies had been fed during the winter with a inverted sugar syrup from sugar beet which had a high concentration of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). HMF concentrations ranged from 18.8 ppm to 365.6 ppm. Data from the scientific literature are quite limited, but several authors confirm the harmful effect of HMF on honey bee health. Other elements, however, may have played a role in this apparent mortality such as crystallization of syrups, resulting in unavailability of sugar for the honey bees, and thus the death of them from starvation. Pending the acquisition of new scientific knowledge on the subject, it is recommended to follow good beekeeping practices detailed in this article to minimize the formation of HMF in syrups for honey bee feeding. In addition, a draft action limit corresponding to a maximal concentration of 40 ppm of HMF is proposed in order to control the risk at the producer and distributor of syrups for honey bee feeding level
Propagation of thermal excitations in a cluster of vortices in superfluid 3He-B
We describe the first measurement on Andreev scattering of thermal
excitations from a vortex configuration with known density, spatial extent, and
orientations in 3He-B superfluid. The heat flow from a blackbody radiator in
equilibrium rotation at constant angular velocity is measured with two quartz
tuning fork oscillators. One oscillator creates a controllable density of
excitations at 0.2Tc base temperature and the other records the thermal
response. The results are compared to numerical calculations of ballistic
propagation of thermal quasiparticles through a cluster of rectilinear

Vortex core contribution to textural energy in 3He-B below 0.4Tc
Vortex lines affect the spatial order-parameter distribution in superfluid
3He-B owing to superflow circulating around vortex cores and due to the
interaction of the order parameter in the core and in the bulk as a result of
superfluid coherence over the whole volume. The step-like change of the latter
contribution at 0.6Tc (at a pressure of 29bar) signifies the transition from
axisymmetric cores at higher temperatures to broken-symmetry cores at lower
temperatures. We extended earlier measurements of the core contribution to
temperatures below 0.2Tc, in particular searching for a possible new core
transition to lower symmetries. As a measuring tool we track the energy levels

Experimental determination of the quasi-particle decay length in a superconducting quantum well
We have investigated experimentally the electronic transport properties of a
two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) present in an AlSb/InAs/AlSb quantum well,
where part of the toplayer has been replaced by a superconducting Nb strip,
with an energy gap . By measuring the lateral electronic transport
underneath the superconductor, and comparing the experimental results with a
model based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and the Landauer-B\"uttiker
formalism, we obtain a decay length for
electrons. This decay length corresponds to an interface transparency
between the Nb and InAs. Using this value, we infer an
energy gap in the excitation spectrum of the SQW of .Comment: Revtex, 3 PostScript figure
Superfluid vortex front at T -> 0: Decoupling from the reference frame
Steady-state turbulent motion is created in superfluid 3He-B at low
temperatures in the form of a turbulent vortex front, which moves axially along
a rotating cylindrical container of 3He-B and replaces vortex-free flow with
vortex lines at constant density. We present the first measurements on the
thermal signal from dissipation as a function of time, recorded at 0.2 Tc
during the front motion, which is monitored using NMR techniques. Both the
measurements and the numerical calculations of the vortex dynamics show that at
low temperatures the density of the propagating vortices falls well below the
equilibrium value, i.e. the superfluid rotates at a smaller angular velocity
than the container. This is the first evidence for the decoupling of the
superfluid from the container reference frame in the zero-temperature limit.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Spontaneous Charging and Crystallization of Water Droplets in Oil
We study the spontaneous charging and the crystallization of spherical
micron-sized water-droplets dispersed in oil by numerically solving, within a
Poisson-Boltzmann theory in the geometry of a spherical cell, for the density
profiles of the cations and anions in the system. We take into account
screening, ionic Born self-energy differences between oil and water, and
partitioning of ions over the two media. We find that the surface charge
density of the droplet as induced by the ion partitioning is significantly
affected by the droplet curvature and by the finite density of the droplets. We
also find that the salt concentration and the dielectric constant regime in
which crystallization of the water droplets is predicted is enhanced
substantially compared to results based on the planar oil-water interface,

Dynamic Remanent Vortices in Superfluid 3He-B
We investigate the decay of vortices in a rotating cylindrical sample of
3He-B, after rotation has been stopped. With decreasing temperature vortex
annihilation slows down as the damping in vortex motion, the mutual friction
dissipation \alpha(T), decreases almost exponentially. Remanent vortices then
survive for increasingly long periods, while they move towards annihilation in
zero applied flow. After a waiting period \Delta t at zero flow, rotation is
reapplied and the remnants evolve to rectilinear vortices. By counting these
lines, we measure at temperatures above the transition to turbulence ~0.6T_c
the number of remnants as a function of \alpha(T) and \Delta t. At temperatures
below the transition to turbulence T \lesssim 0.55 T_c, remnants expanding in
applied flow become unstable and generate in a turbulent burst the equilibrium
number of vortices. Here we measure the onset temperature T_on of turbulence as

Amblyopia and quality of life: a systematic review
Background/Aims
Amblyopia is a common condition which can affect up to 5% of the general population. The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) implications of amblyopia and/or its treatment have been explored in the literature.
Methods
A systematic literature search was undertaken (16th-30th January 2007) to identify the HRQoL implications of amblyopia and/or its treatment.
Results
A total of 25 papers were included in the literature review. The HRQoL implications of amblyopia related specifically to amblyopia treatment, rather than the condition itself. These included the impact upon family life; social interactions; difficulties undertaking daily activities; and feelings and behaviour. The identified studies adopted a number of methodologies. The study populations included; children with the condition; parents of children with amblyopia; and adults who had undertaken amblyopia treatment as a child. Some studies developed their own measures of HRQoL, and others determined HRQoL through proxy measures.
Conclusions
The reported findings of the HRQoL implications are of importance when considering the management of cases of amblyopia. Further research is required to assess the immediate and long-term effects of amblyopia and/or its treatment upon HRQoL using a more standardised approach
