Mapping between dissipative and Hamiltonian systems
Theoretical studies of nonequilibrium systems are complicated by the lack of
a general framework. In this work we first show that a transformation
introduced by Ao recently (J. Phys. A {\bf 37}, L25 (2004)) is related to
previous works of Graham (Z. Physik B {\bf 26}, 397 (1977)) and Eyink {\it et
al.} (J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 83}, 385 (1996)), which can also be viewed as the
generalized application of the Helmholtz theorem in vector calculus. We then
show that systems described by ordinary stochastic differential equations with
white noise can be mapped to thermostated Hamiltonian systems. A steady-state
of a dissipative system corresponds to the equilibrium state of the
corresponding Hamiltonian system. These results provides a solid theoretical
ground for corresponding studies on nonequilibrium dynamics, especially on
nonequilibrium steady state. The mapping permits the application of established
techniques and results for Hamiltonian systems to dissipative non-Hamiltonian
systems, those for thermodynamic equilibrium states to nonequilibrium steady

Design of a speed meter interferometer proof-of-principle experiment
The second generation of large scale interferometric gravitational wave
detectors will be limited by quantum noise over a wide frequency range in their
detection band. Further sensitivity improvements for future upgrades or new
detectors beyond the second generation motivate the development of measurement
schemes to mitigate the impact of quantum noise in these instruments. Two
strands of development are being pursued to reach this goal, focusing both on
modifications of the well-established Michelson detector configuration and
development of different detector topologies. In this paper, we present the
design of the world's first Sagnac speed meter interferometer which is
currently being constructed at the University of Glasgow. With this
proof-of-principle experiment we aim to demonstrate the theoretically predicted
lower quantum noise in a Sagnac interferometer compared to an equivalent
Michelson interferometer, to qualify Sagnac speed meters for further research
towards an implementation in a future generation large scale gravitational wave

Among friends:A qualitative exploration of the role of peers in young people's alcohol use using Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, field and capital
Drinking is viewed by young people as a predominantly social activity which provides an opportunity for entertainment and bonding with friends. Using Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field and capital, this article explores young people's attitudes and beliefs around alcohol use, influences on behaviour, and the role of peers, with a view to informing the development of preventive interventions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 young people aged 18–20 in the south west of England. We describe how friends were integral in drinking experiences, and drinking with friends was equated with fun and enjoyment. In this way, the desire for social and symbolic capital appeared to be a key motivator for adolescent drinking. Critically, however, wider cultural norms played the predominant role in shaping behaviour, via the internalisation of widely accepted practice and the subsequent externalisation of norms through the habitus. Applying Bourdieu's theory suggests that population-level interventions that regulate alcohol consumption, and thus disrupt the field, are likely to facilitate behaviour change among young people by driving a response in habitus
The Formation and Survival of Discs in a Lambda-CDM Universe
We study the formation of galaxies in a Lambda-CDM Universe using high
resolution hydrodynamical simulations with a multiphase treatment of gas,
cooling and feedback, focusing on the formation of discs. Our simulations
follow eight haloes similar in mass to the Milky Way and extracted from a large
cosmological simulation without restriction on spin parameter or merger
history. This allows us to investigate how the final properties of the
simulated galaxies correlate with the formation histories of their haloes. We
find that, at z = 0, none of our galaxies contain a disc with more than 20 per
cent of its total stellar mass. Four of the eight galaxies nevertheless have
well-formed disc components, three have dominant spheroids and very small
discs, and one is a spheroidal galaxy with no disc at all. The z = 0 spheroids
are made of old stars, while discs are younger and formed from the inside-out.
Neither the existence of a disc at z = 0 nor the final disc-to-total mass ratio
seems to depend on the spin parameter of the halo. Discs are formed in haloes
with spin parameters as low as 0.01 and as high as 0.05; galaxies with little
or no disc component span the same range in spin parameter. Except for one of
the simulated galaxies, all have significant discs at z > ~2, regardless of
their z = 0 morphologies. Major mergers and instabilities which arise when
accreting cold gas is misaligned with the stellar disc trigger a transfer of
mass from the discs to the spheroids. In some cases, discs are destroyed, while
in others, they survive or reform. This suggests that the survival probability
of discs depends on the particular formation history of each galaxy. A
realistic Lambda-CDM model will clearly require weaker star formation at high

Analysis of a spatial Lotka-Volterra model with a finite range predator-prey interaction
We perform an analysis of a recent spatial version of the classical
Lotka-Volterra model, where a finite scale controls individuals' interaction.
We study the behavior of the predator-prey dynamics in physical spaces higher
than one, showing how spatial patterns can emerge for some values of the

Search for gravitational waves associated with the InterPlanetary Network short gamma ray bursts
We outline the scientific motivation behind a search for gravitational waves
associated with short gamma ray bursts detected by the InterPlanetary Network
(IPN) during LIGO's fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. The IPN
localisation of short gamma ray bursts is limited to extended error boxes of
different shapes and sizes and a search on these error boxes poses a series of
challenges for data analysis. We will discuss these challenges and outline the

The Hyper Suprime-Cam Software Pipeline
In this paper, we describe the optical imaging data processing pipeline
developed for the Subaru Telescope's Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) instrument. The
HSC Pipeline builds on the prototype pipeline being developed by the Large
Synoptic Survey Telescope's Data Management system, adding customizations for
HSC, large-scale processing capabilities, and novel algorithms that have since
been reincorporated into the LSST codebase. While designed primarily to reduce
HSC Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) data, it is also the recommended pipeline
for reducing general-observer HSC data. The HSC pipeline includes high level
processing steps that generate coadded images and science-ready catalogs as
