    Significant reduction of electronic correlations upon isovalent Ru substitution of BaFe2As2

    We present a detailed investigation of Ba(Fe0.65Ru0.35)2As2 by transport measurements and Angle Resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe that Fe and Ru orbitals hybridize to form a coherent electronic structure and that Ru does not induce doping. The number of holes and electrons, deduced from the area of the Fermi Surface pockets, are both about twice larger than in BaFe2As2. The contribution of both carriers to the transport is evidenced by a change of sign of the Hall coefficient with decreasing temperature. Fermi velocities increase significantly with respect to BaFe2As2, suggesting a significant reduction of correlation effects. This may be a key to understand the appearance of superconductivity at the expense of magnetism in undoped iron pnictides

    Don't know, can't know: Embracing deeper uncertainties when analysing risks

Copyright @ 2011 The Royal Society.Numerous types of uncertainty arise when using formal models in the analysis of risks. Uncertainty is best seen as a relation, allowing a clear separation of the object, source and ‘owner’ of the uncertainty, and we argue that all expressions of uncertainty are constructed from judgements based on possibly inadequate assumptions, and are therefore contingent. We consider a five-level structure for assessing and communicating uncertainties, distinguishing three within-model levels—event, parameter and model uncertainty—and two extra-model levels concerning acknowledged and unknown inadequacies in the modelling process, including possible disagreements about the framing of the problem. We consider the forms of expression of uncertainty within the five levels, providing numerous examples of the way in which inadequacies in understanding are handled, and examining criticisms of the attempts taken by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to separate the likelihood of events from the confidence in the science. Expressing our confidence in the adequacy of the modelling process requires an assessment of the quality of the underlying evidence, and we draw on a scale that is widely used within evidence-based medicine. We conclude that the contingent nature of risk-modelling needs to be explicitly acknowledged in advice given to policy-makers, and that unconditional expressions of uncertainty remain an aspiration

    Ultrafast filling of an electronic pseudogap in an incommensurate crystal

    We investigate the quasiperiodic crystal (LaS)1.196(VS2) by angle and time resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The dispersion of electronic states is in qualitative agreement with band structure calculated for the VS2 slab without the incommensurate distortion. Nonetheless, the spectra display a temperature dependent pseudogap instead of quasiparticles crossing. The sudden photoexcitation at 50 K induces a partial filling of the electronic pseudogap within less than 80 fs. The electronic energy flows into the lattice modes on a comparable timescale. We attribute this surprisingly short timescale to a very strong electron-phonon coupling to the incommensurate distortion. This result sheds light on the electronic localization arising in aperiodic structures and quasicrystals

    New electronic orderings observed in cobaltates under the influence of misfit periodicities

    We study with ARPES the electronic structure of CoO2 slabs, stacked with rock-salt (RS) layers exhibiting a different (misfit) periodicity. Fermi Surfaces (FS) in phases with different doping and/or periodicities reveal the influence of the RS potential on the electronic structure. We show that these RS potentials are well ordered, even in incommensurate phases, where STM images reveal broad stripes with width as large as 80\AA. The anomalous evolution of the FS area at low dopings is consistent with the localization of a fraction of the electrons. We propose that this is a new form of electronic ordering, induced by the potential of the stacked layers (RS or Na in NaxCoO2) when the FS becomes smaller than the Brillouin Zone of the stacked structure

    Surveillance épidémiologique des troubles musculo-squelettiques du membre supérieur en entreprises dans l’Ouest algérien

    RésuméCette étude transversale et multicentrique a pour objectif d’estimer la prévalence des troubles musculo-squelettiques.du membre supérieur (TMSms) et l’exposition aux facteurs de risque grâce à des médecins du travail sentinelles organisés en réseau de surveillance épidémiologique au niveau des entreprises. Méthodes En 2008, les données cliniques ont été recueillies à l’aide du questionnaire « Nordic » et d’un examen clinique standardisé, selon la démarche diagnostique du consensus européen Saltsa. Les TMSms ont été classés en trois stades de gravité après validation d’un arbre diagnostique. Les facteurs de risque des TMSms ont été recensés par questionnaire comprenant les facteurs biomécaniques, psychosociaux et organisationnels. Des scores d’exposition ont été calculés pour chaque zone anatomique du membre supérieur par addition des facteurs de risque pris en compte par le consensus. Résultats Ainsi, 933 salariés appartenant à huit entreprises industrielles ont été inclus par tirage au sort. Près d’un salarié sur deux et un salarié sur quatre ont souffert au cours des 12 derniers mois et les sept derniers jours de symptômes musculo-squelettiques. La prévalence des TMS diagnostiqués était élevée : 12 % des salariés ont présenté au moins une forme avérée unilatérale et/ou bilatérale de TMSms, 6,3 % un syndrome de la coiffe des rotateurs, 1,8 % une épicondylite latérale, 2,8 % un syndrome du canal carpien. La prévalence des symptômes et des TMSms avérés augmentait avec l’âge et variait largement en fonction des entreprises et des professions. Un salarié sur deux était exposé à au moins deux facteurs de risque au niveau du membre supérieur, seuil d’alerte du consensus Saltsa. Conclusion L’utilisation du protocole Saltsa pour la première fois dans des entreprises algériennes a révélé l’importance de la prévalence des TMS et de l’exposition aux facteurs de risques. Ces résultats montrent la nécessité de la structuration des médecins du travail en réseau de surveillance épidémiologique afin d’élaborer un programme de prévention dans la plupart des secteurs pour réduire la prévalence des TMSms

    Comparison of eta and eta' production in the pp -> pp eta(eta') reactions near threshold

    The total cross section of the pp -> pp eta' reaction has been measured at two energies near threshold by detecting the final protons in a magnetic spectrometer. The values obtained are about a factor of 70 less than for the corresponding eta production, in good agreement with the predictions of a one-pion-exchange model.Comment: 10 pages, Latex with 3 eps figure

    The rogue nature of hiatuses in a global warming climate

    The nature of rogue events is their unlikelihood and the recent unpredicted decade-long slowdown in surface warming, the so-called hiatus, may be such an event. However, given decadal variability in climate, global surface temperatures were never expected to increase monotonically with increasing radiative forcing. Here surface air temperature from 20 climate models is analyzed to estimate the historical and future likelihood of hiatuses and “surges” (faster than expected warming), showing that the global hiatus of the early 21st century was extremely unlikely. A novel analysis of future climate scenarios suggests that hiatuses will almost vanish and surges will strongly intensify by 2100 under a “business as usual” scenario. For “CO2 stabilisation” scenarios, hiatus, and surge characteristics revert to typical 1940s values. These results suggest to study the hiatus of the early 21st century and future reoccurrences as rogue events, at the limit of the variability of current climate modelling capability

    Prevalence and Determinants of Obesity among Primary School Children in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    Childhood obesity has increased dramatically and has become a public health concern worldwide. Childhood obesity is likely to persist through adulthood and may lead to early onset of NCDs. However, there is paucity of data on obesity among primary school children in Tanzania. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of obesity among primary school children in Dar es Salaam. A cross sectional study was conducted among school age children in randomly selected schools in Dar es Salaam. Anthropometric and blood pressure measurements were taken using standard procedures. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m2). Child obesity was defined as BMI at or above 95th percentile for age and sex. Socio-demographic characteristics of children were determined using a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to determine association between independent variables with obesity among primary school children in Dar es Salaam. A total of 446 children were included in the analysis. The mean age of the participants was 11.1±2.0 years and 53.1% were girls. The mean BMI, SBP and DBP were 16.6±4.0 kg/m2, 103.9±10.3mmHg and 65.6±8.2mmHg respectively. The overall prevalence of child obesity was 5.2% and was higher among girls (6.3%) compared to boys (3.8%). Obese children had significantly higher mean values for age (p=0.042), systolic and diastolic blood pressures (all p<0.001). Most obese children were from households with fewer children (p=0.019) and residing in urban areas (p=0.002). Controlling for other variables, age above 10 years (AOR=3.3, 95% CI=1.5-7.2), female sex (AOR=2.6, 95% CI=1.4-4.9), urban residence (AOR=2.5, 95% CI=1.2-5.3) and having money to spend at school (AOR=2.6, 95% CI=1.4-4.8) were significantly associated with child obesity. The prevalence of childhood obesity in this population was found to be low. However, children from urban schools and girls were proportionately more obese compared to their counterparts. Primary preventive measures for childhood obesity should start early in childhood and address socioeconomic factors of parents contributing to childhood obesity

    Silicon intercalation into the graphene-SiC interface

    In this work we use LEEM, XPEEM and XPS to study how the excess Si at the graphene-vacuum interface reorders itself at high temperatures. We show that silicon deposited at room temperature onto multilayer graphene films grown on the SiC(000[`1]) rapidly diffuses to the graphene-SiC interface when heated to temperatures above 1020. In a sequence of depositions, we have been able to intercalate ~ 6 ML of Si into the graphene-SiC interface.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR
