Giant-cell tumour of proximal radius in a 50-year-old female with wrist drop: a rare case report

    Get PDF
Abstract Giant-cell tumour is a locally aggressive tumour of long bones of epiphyseal region commonly occurring in adults aged 20–40 years. Most common location is distal femur, proximal tibia, and distal radius. Different treatment options being used are curettage with bone graft or bone cement, resection with arthrodesis, reconstruction, radiation, and chemotherapy. We are reporting a case of giant-cell tumour of right proximal radius in a 50-year-old female with posterior interosseous nerve palsy. It is very rare, and only four cases have been reported in the literature. It was treated by wide margin resection with fibular grafting, titanium elastic nail system along with cancellous bone graft reconstruction

Enrichment of antioxidant capacity and vitamin E in pita made from barley

    Get PDF
This study aimed to enhance total antioxidant and vitamin E content of pita bread, by replacing 50% of the standard baker's flour with flours milled from covered (WI2585 and Harrington) or hulless (Finniss) barley genotypes, previously shown to have high antioxidant and vitamin E levels at harvest. Pita breads were made from either 100% baker's flour (control) or 50% malt flour, whole-grain flour, or flour from barley grains pearled at 10%, 15%, and 20% grain weight. Antioxidant capacity and vitamin E content of flours and pitas were determined by their ability to scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The physical and sensory properties of the pitas were also assessed. All pitas made from either whole grain or pearled barley flour had a higher antioxidant capacity and most also had higher vitamin E content than standard pita. The antioxidant and vitamin E levels were reduced in pearled compared to whole grains, however the extent of that reduction varied among genotypes. The greatest antioxidant and vitamin E levels were found in pita made from malt flour or Finniss whole grain flour. Furthermore, sensory analysis suggested these pitas were acceptable to consumers and retained similar physical and sensory properties to those in the control pita.Thi Thu Dung Do, Beverly Muhlhausler, Amanda Box and Amanda J. Distribution and Molecular Characterization of β-Glucans from Hull-Less Barley Bran, Shorts and Flour

    Get PDF
Six hull-less barley cultivars widely grown in China were roller-milled to produce bran, shorts and flour fractions. The distribution and molecular characteristics of β-glucans from the three roller-milled fractions were investigated. The β-glucan contents in the six hull-less barley cultivars varied from 4.96% to 7.62%. For all the six cultivars, the shorts fraction contained the highest concentration of β-glucan (8.12–13.01%), followed by bran (6.15–7.58%) and flour (2.48–2.95%). Crude β-glucans were prepared from the three roller-milled fractions using aqueous sodium carbonate (pH 10). These preparations contained 45.38–71.41% β-glucan, 10.81–17.26% arabinoxylan, 2.6–9.6% protein, 2.7–9.0% starch, and 5.23–9.68% ash. Purification using α-amylase and β-xylanase in combination with pH adjustment and dialysis produced high purity β-glucan preparations (91–95%). The molecular weight (Mw) of β-glucan preparations from roller-milled fractions ranged from 117,600 to 852,400 g/mol. β-Glucan from flour had higher Mw than those from shorts and bran within the same cultivar, and β-glucan preparations from bran had the lowest Mw

Practical Actions for Idol Breaking in Islam: A Historical Study

    Get PDF
Practical measures for idol breaking in Islam, a significant aspect of the faith that emphasizes the oneness of God (Tawhid) and the rejection of idolatry. Idol breaking in Islam is not just about the physical destruction of idols; it's fundamentally linked to the concept of Tawhid, which is the belief in the oneness of Allah. This principle is at the heart of Islamic theology and serves as a foundation for a Muslim's faith and practice. The rejection of idolatry is crucial because it signifies a commitment to worshiping Allah alone without any intermediaries or representations. Idol breaking, highlighting the historical context in which idol worship was prevalent and the prophetic traditions that advocate for its eradication. It outlines practical strategies for addressing idol worship in contemporary society, including community education, interfaith dialogue, and the promotion of Islamic teachings that emphasize monotheism. This paper is written on the history of idol breaking in Islam to highlight that there is no place of polytheism, one and only Allah has right to be worshiped. It is strong hope this paper will provide the suffciant knowledge and it will be beneficial to understand the history of idol breaking in Islam.&nbsp

Role of PFN in ipsilateral fracture neck and shaft femur: a single solution to double fracture

    Get PDF
Background: Ipsilateral, concomitant femoral neck and shaft fracture is a rare fracture pattern that presents a diagnostic and treatment challenge. A variety of management modalities have been tried to treat this complex fracture pattern ranging from conservative approach to recently introduced proximal femoral nails (PFN).Methods: We analysed the retrospective data of 25 consecutive patients who had sustained a high energy trauma who had concomitant ipsilateral fractures of the femoral shaft associated with proximal femur fractures treated with PFN between January 2010 and January 2017.Results: Average follow up period was 1.2 years. All ipsilateral neck and shaft fractures were united with proximal femur nail (PFN). Neck fracture union averaged 4.3 months (range, 3–6 months). Shaft fracture union averaged 5.4 months (range, 4–7 months). Eighteen patients (70%) had a good functional result, five patients (21%) had fair result and in two patients the result (9%) was poor. Conclusions: We observed although technically demanding, the reconstruction nail is an acceptable, cost effective and minimal invasive alternative for the management of concomitant ipsilateral fractures of the femoral neck and shaft, with a good functional outcome and fewer complications

The Asymmetric Effect of Exchange Rate on the Household Consumption Expenditures

    Get PDF
Previous literature on the exchange rate and household consumption failed to examine the effect of positive and negative changes in the exchange rate on household consumption expenditures. We extended the available literature by investigating the asymmetric impacts in African emerging economies (AEE). To attain this aim, we utilized the nonlinear ARDL model, which covers both negative and positive shocks in the exchange rate. Our results indicate that movements in the exchange rate have asymmetric impacts on household consumption in all the included emerging economies, excluding Nigeria. Our findings propose recommendations for the policymakers to ensure the alignment of the optimal exchange rate for countries of emerging African economies and propose relevant policies for the countries.JEL Classification: D12, D60, I30How to Cite:Gohar, R., Chang, B.
