Characteristics of a cohort of high-risk men who have sex with men on pre-exposure prophylaxis reporting transgender sexual partners.
Transgender people continue to be at high-risk for HIV acquisition, but little is known about the characteristics of their sexual partners. To address this gap, we examined sociodemographic and sexual characteristics of cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reporting transgender sexual partners.A cohort of 392 MSM in southern California in a randomized clinical trial for PrEP adherence were followed from 2013 to 2016. Multivariable generalized estimating equation and logistic models identified characteristics of MSM reporting transgender sexual partners and PrEP adherence.Only 14 (4%) MSM reported having transgender sexual partners. MSM were more likely to report transgender partners if they were African American, had incident chlamydia, reported injection drug-using sexual partners, or received items for sex. Most associations remained significant in the multivariable model: African American (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 11.20, P = .01), incident chlamydia (AOR 3.71, P = .04), and receiving items for sex (AOR 5.29, P = .04). There were no significant differences in PrEP adherence between MSM reporting transgender partners and their counterpart.MSM who report transgender sexual partners share characteristics associated with individuals with high HIV prevalence. Identifying this group distinct from larger cohorts of MSM could offer new HIV prevention opportunities for this group of MSM and the transgender community

Syndemics and the PrEP Cascade: Results from a Sample of Young Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.
Young Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) are a highly vulnerable population for HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a novel biomedical HIV prevention tool that may aid in reducing the disparity in HIV incidence among Latino MSM. However, PrEP use is disproportionally low among Latino MSM and, therefore, identifying barriers along the PrEP continuum of care (the "PrEP cascade") would provide insight into how to best deploy PrEP interventions. Syndemics theory is a prominent framework employed in HIV prevention; however, to date, no known studies have applied this theory to PrEP. Thus, the aim of the current study was to explore the association between syndemics and the PrEP cascade, including the degree to which psychosocial and structural syndemic constructs are related to the PrEP cascade. Participants were 151 young Latino MSM (M age = 24 years; SD = 3) residing in San Diego, California, who completed a battery of online self-report measures. Results indicated high levels of syndemic indicators and varying levels of engagement across the PrEP cascade. As syndemic indicators increased, the odds of engagement across the PrEP cascade were significantly lowered. Psychosocial and structural syndemic factors accounted for unique variance in the PrEP cascade. Results highlight the need for combination interventions that address both psychosocial and structural barriers to PrEP use and persistence among young Latino MSM
History of depression and survival after acute myocardial infarction
Objective: To compare survival in post-myocardial (MI) participants from the Enhancing Recovery In Coronary Heart Disease (ENRICHD) clinical trial with a first episode of major depression (MD) and those with recurrent MID, which is a risk factor for mortality after acute MI. Recent reports suggest that the level of risk may depend on whether the comorbid MD is a first or a recurrent episode. Methods: Survival was compared over a median of 29 months in 370 patients with an initial episode of MD, 550 with recurrent MD, and 408 who were free of depression. Results: After adjusting for an all-cause mortality risk score, initial Beck Depression Inventory score, and the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants, patients with a first episode of MD had poorer survival (18.4% all-cause mortality) than those with recurrent MD (11.8%) (hazard ratio (HR)=1.4; 95% Confidence Interval (CI)=1.0-2.0; p=.05). Both first depression (HR=3.1; 95% CI=1.6-6.1; p=.001) and recurrent MD (HR=2.2; 95% CI=1.1-4.4; p=.03) had significantly poorer survival than did the nondepressed patients (3.4%). A secondary analysis of deaths classified as probably due to a cardiovascular cause resulted in similar HRs, but the difference between depression groups was not significant. Conclusions: Both initial and recurrent episodes of MD predict shorter survival after acute MI, but initial MD episodes are more strongly predictive than recurrent episodes. Exploratory analyses suggest that this cannot be explained by more severe heart disease at index, poorer response to depression treatment, or a higher risk of cerebrovascular disease in patients with initial MD episodes
On -transforms of one-dimensional diffusions stopped upon hitting zero
For a one-dimensional diffusion on an interval for which 0 is the
regular-reflecting left boundary, three kinds of conditionings to avoid zero
are studied. The limit processes are -transforms of the process stopped
upon hitting zero, where 's are the ground state, the scale function, and
the renormalized zero-resolvent. Several properties of the -transforms are
investigated
Log-parabolic spectra and particle acceleration in blazars. III: SSC emission in the TeV band from Mkn 501
Curved broad-band spectral distributions of non-thermal sources like blazars
are described well by a log-parabolic (LP) law where the second degree term
measures the curvature. LP energy spectra can be obtained for relativistic
electrons by means of a statistical acceleration mechanism whose probability of
acceleration depends on energy. In this paper we compute the spectra radiated
by an electron population via synchrotron (S) and Synchro-Self Compton(SSC)
processes to derive the relations between the LP parameters. These spectra were
obtained by means of an accurate numerical code. We found that the ratio
between the curvature parameters of the S spectrum to that of the electrons is
equal to about 0.2 instead of 0.25, the value foreseen in the delta
approximation. Inverse Compton spectra are also intrinsically curved and can be
approximated by a log-parabola only in limited ranges. The curvature parameter,
estimated around the SED peak, may vary from a lower value than that of the S
spectrum up to that of emitting electrons depending on whether the scattering
is in the Thomson or in the Klein-Nishina regime. We applied this analysis to
computing the SSC emission from the BL Lac object Mkn 501 during the large
flare of April 1997. We fit simultaneous BeppoSAX and CAT data and reproduced
intensities and spectral curvatures of both components with good accuracy. The
large curvature observed in the TeV range was found to be mainly intrinsic, and
therefore did not require a large pair production absorption against the
extragalactic background. We regard this finding as an indication that the
Universe is more transparent at these energies than previously assumed by
several models found in the literature. This conclusion is supported by recent
detection of two relatively high redshift blazars with H.E.S.S.Comment: Comments: 12 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in the

On the emergent Semantic Web and overlooked issues
The emergent Semantic Web, despite being in its infancy, has already received a lotof attention from academia and industry. This resulted in an abundance of prototype systems and discussion most of which are centred around the underlying infrastructure. However, when we critically review the work done to date we realise that there is little discussion with respect to the vision of the Semantic Web. In particular, there is an observed dearth of discussion on how to deliver knowledge sharing in an environment such as the Semantic Web in effective and efficient manners. There are a lot of overlooked issues, associated with agents and trust to hidden assumptions made with respect to knowledge representation and robust reasoning in a distributed environment. These issues could potentially hinder further development if not considered at the early stages of designing Semantic Web systems. In this perspectives paper, we aim to help engineers and practitioners of the Semantic Web by raising awareness of these issues
Inverse Compton X-rays from relativistic flare electrons and positrons
<p><b>Context:</b> In solar flares, inverse Compton scattering (ICS) of photospheric photons might give rise to detectable hard X-ray photon fluxes from the corona where ambient densities are too low for significant bremsstrahlung or recombination. γ-ray lines and continuum in some large flares imply the presence of the necessary ~100 MeV electrons and positrons, the latter as by-products of GeV energy ions. Recent observations of coronal hard X-ray sources in particular prompt us to reconsider here the possible contribution of ICS.</p>
<p><b>Aims:</b> We aim to evaluate the ICS X-ray fluxes to be expected from prescribed populations of relativistic electrons and positrons in the solar corona. The ultimate aim is to determine if ICS coronal X-ray sources might offer a new diagnostic window on relativistic electrons and ions in flares.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> We use the complete formalism of ICS to calculate X-ray fluxes from possible populations of flare primary electrons and secondary positrons, paying attention to the incident photon angular distribution near the solar surface and thus improving on the assumption of isotropy made in previous solar discussions.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> Both primary electrons and secondary positrons produce very hard ICS X-ray spectra. The anisotropic primary radiation field results in pronounced centre-to-limb variation in predicted fluxes and spectra, with the most intense spectra, extending to the highest photon energies, expected from limb flares. Acceptable numbers of electrons or positrons could account for RHESSI coronal X/γ-ray sources.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> Some coronal X-ray sources at least might be interpreted in terms of ICS by relativistic electrons or positrons, particularly when sources appear at such low ambient densities that bremsstrahlung appears implausible.</p>
Spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy and modeling of the nonthermal emission of the PWN in G0.9+0.1
We performed a spatially resolved spectral X-ray study of the pulsar wind
nebula (PWN) in the supernova remnant G0.9+0.1. Furthermore we modeled its
nonthermal emission in the X-ray and very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV)
gamma-ray regime. Using Chandra ACIS-S3 data, we investigated the east-west
dependence of the spectral properties of G0.9+0.1 by calculating hardness
ratios. We analyzed the EPIC-MOS and EPIC-pn data of two on-axis observations
of the XMM-Newton telescope and extracted spectra of four annulus-shaped
regions, centered on the region of brightest emission of the source. A radially
symmetric leptonic model was applied in order to reproduce the observed X-ray
emission of the inner part of the PWN. Using the optimized model parameter
values obtained from the X-ray analysis, we then compared the modeled inverse
Compton (IC) radiation with the published H.E.S.S. gamma-ray data. The spectral
index within the four annuli increases with growing distance to the pulsar,
whereas the surface brightness drops. With the adopted model we are able to
reproduce the characteristics of the X-ray spectra. The model results for the
VHE gamma radiation, however, strongly deviate from the H.E.S.S. data.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Topologically massive magnetic monopoles
We show that in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory of topologically massive
electrodynamics the Dirac string of a monopole becomes a cone in anti-de Sitter
space with the opening angle of the cone determined by the topological mass
which in turn is related to the square root of the cosmological constant. This
proves to be an example of a physical system, {\it a priory} completely
unrelated to gravity, which nevertheless requires curved spacetime for its very
existence. We extend this result to topologically massive gravity coupled to
topologically massive electrodynamics in the framework of the theory of Deser,
Jackiw and Templeton. These are homogeneous spaces with conical deficit. Pure
Einstein gravity coupled to Maxwell-Chern-Simons field does not admit such a
monopole solution
