Mathematical programs with complementarity constraints: convergence properties of a smoothing method

    Get PDF
In this paper, optimization problems PP with complementarity constraints are considered. Characterizations for local minimizers xˉ\bar{x} of PP of Orders 1 and 2 are presented. We analyze a parametric smoothing approach for solving these programs in which PP is replaced by a perturbed problem PτP_{\tau} depending on a (small) parameter τ\tau. We are interested in the convergence behavior of the feasible set Fτ\cal{F}_{\tau} and the convergence of the solutions xˉτ\bar{x}_{\tau} of PτP_{\tau} for τ0.\tau\to 0. In particular, it is shown that, under generic assumptions, the solutions xˉτ\bar{x}_{\tau} are unique and converge to a solution xˉ\bar{x} of PP with a rate O(τ)\cal{O}(\sqrt{\tau}). Moreover, the convergence for the Hausdorff distance d(Fτd(\cal{F}_{\tau}, F)\cal{F}) between the feasible sets of PτP_{\tau} and PP is of order O(τ)\cal{O}(\sqrt{\tau})

The quality of democracy in Spain took a great leap backwards in 2012

One of the most worrying aspects of the Eurozone crisis is that it may weaken the quality of democracy in struggling economies. Luis Bouza García outlines the results of a report on the quality of Spanish democracy, based on an expert survey of social scientists. He notes that the figures for 2012 represent the lowest quality of democracy score since the study began in 2008. A number of different factors are likely to have led to this result, including a loss of national autonomy experienced by Spain during the crisis, broken manifesto promises from the ruling government, and the impact of political scandals on trust in Spanish politicians

Ranked Set Sampling Using Auxiliary Variables of a Randomized Response Procedure for Estimating the Mean of a Sensitive Quantitative Character

The analysis of the behavior of estimators of the mean of a sensitive variable is considered when a randomized response procedure is used. The results deal with the inference based on simple random sampling with replacement study design. A study of the behavior of the procedures for a ranked set sampling design is developed. A gain in accuracy is generally associated with the proposed alternative model

Its conception is not an isolated element, but it is greatly influenced by the sociocultural conditions of its immediate surroundings. Neither is it a static entity, as it has to respond to today’s changing reality. A world in which an atmosphere of transformation, time and sensitivity prevails, topological relationships that will allow the subjectivity of space for each individual. Freedom that will enrich society’s spatial perception. Thus, the objective of this research is the study of the topological conception of space in two cultures as influential as the eastern and the western, analyzing differences and similarities between classical and contemporary works of both worlds.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.ETSA). Validity of a Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire for Adults with Intellectual Disability

    Get PDF
Nutrition professionals consider individuals with intellectual disabilities to be nutritionally vulnerable or at risk for becoming overweight or obese. Presently there is limited empirical evidence regarding the nutritional habits and education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Currently the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program has become the largest global public health organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual disabilities. In 2012, Special Olympics Texas provided nearly 1,600 health screenings to athletes. The screenings provide surveillance information for public health organizations in the use of health planning, prevention, and promotion. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a screening tool used to measure nutrition knowledge and habits of Special Olympics athletes. Data was collected during a Special Olympics competition and all athletes were screened according to the international protocol for Health Promotions - Special Olympics. Each Health Promotions screening includes measurements of height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, bone mineral density and a questionnaire on nutrition habits and nutrition knowledge. For this study, athletes and parents each completed the nutrition habits and knowledge questionnaire independently. Participants for this study included 55 (25 female) individuals with intellectual disabilities of varying etiology as well as their parents or caregivers. Participants were a mean age of 28.1 + 10.6 years old with an average BMI of 28.5 + 8.3. Of the all the participants, 60% were overweight or obese. Results revealed acceptable internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.65. Spearman’s pairwise correlation between athletes and parents was with a correlation coefficient of 0.52 (p \u3c 0.01). Intraclass correlations for any single question were weak (r = 0.48). When averaging all responses intraclass correlations were moderate (r = 0.65). Cohen’s kappa inter-rater agreement was fair between athletes and parents with kappa values of 0.31 (p \u3c 0.001). Independent sample t-tests found athletes and parents provided significantly different responses regarding the frequency of consuming fast food, sweetened drinks, and snacks. Results from this study suggest the Healthy Athletes Surveillance Questionnaire for nutrition knowledge and habits has only fair-to- acceptable validity. Given the intellectual impairments found in this population, self-report data can lead to questionable validity. Results from the screenings provide useful information only if the data collected is valid and reliable. Researchers and practitioners should use caution when using the Healthy Athletes Surveillance Questionnaire for scientific or therapeutic uses

The aim of this paper is to consider a reality that forces us to cope a new urban scale in this area. This is a step in the iterative process of finding a model of cooperative territory between fragments of different urbanity own “sprawling city in Galicia”. Based on the opportunities identified establishing a model (M1), guidelines, and several urban projects. This work has been divided into: introduction, settlement network, mobility network and open spaces network. and structured in opportunities, model and guidelines. In short, it is laying the groundwork for a future that is already here, the “city of Arousa”.Peer Reviewe
