Characterization of a Differential Radio-Frequency Single-Electron Transistor
We have fabricated and characterized a new type of electrometer that couples
two parallel single-electron transistors (SETs) to a radio-frequency tank
circuit for use as a differential RF-SET. We demonstrate operation of this
device in summing, differential, and single-SET operation modes, and use it to
measure a Coulomb staircase from a differential single Cooper-pair box. In
differential mode, the device is sensitive to uncorrelated input signals while

Determination of the mosaic angle distribution of Grafoil platelets using continuous-wave NMR spectra
We described details of a method to estimate with good accuracy the mosaic
angle distributions of microcrystallites (platelets) in exfoliated graphite
like Grafoil which is commonly used as an adsorption substrate for helium thin
films. The method is based on analysis of resonance field shifts in
continuous-wave (CW) NMR spectra of He ferromagnetic monolayers making
use of the large nuclear polarization of the adsorbate itself. The mosaic angle
distribution of a Grafoil substrate analyzed in this way can be well fitted to
a gaussian form with a deg spread. This distribution is quite
different from the previous estimation based on neutron scattering data which
showed an unrealistically large isotropic powder-like component.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
BINDING OF CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM BY THE CONTRACTILE ELEMENTS
Using a technique for determining Ca and Mg based on Schwarzenberg's method of titration with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), it was found that glycerol-extracted muscle fibers contain on the average 0.58 millimole Ca and 0.55 millimole Mg per kg. muscle. The fibers take up additional Ca or Mg from dilute solutions of these metals, but in KCl solutions, the excess is exchanged for K ions. Inorganic pyrophosphate (PP) removes part of the bound Mg, no Ca; EDTA removes predominantly Ca, but never more than about one-half the total amount. These results are discussed in relation to previous observations on the effects of PP and EDTA on mechanical properties and contractility of extracted muscle fibers. After the partial loss of bound divalent metals, muscle fibers swell in dilute salt solutions; they also contract slightly and become more translucent
Ferromagnetism of He Films in the Low Field Limit
We provide evidence for a finite temperature ferromagnetic transition in
2-dimensions as in thin films of He on graphite, a model system
for the study of two-dimensional magnetism. We perform pulsed and CW NMR
experiments at fields of 0.03 - 0.48 mT on He at areal densities of 20.5 -
24.2 atoms/nm. At these densities, the second layer of He has a
strongly ferromagnetic tendency. With decreasing temperature, we find a rapid
onset of magnetization that becomes independent of the applied field at
temperatures in the vicinity of 1 mK. Both the dipolar field and the NMR
linewidth grow rapidly as well, which is consistent with a large (order unity)
polarization of the He spins.Comment: 4 figure
