Binding the body, binding the mind : the limitations of empathy in John Gabriel Stedman's “Narrative of a five years' expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam” [abstract]
This presentation was made during the session "Body Knowledge and Self-Study."Abstract of a presentation given at the 2008 Body Project conference at the University of Missouri-Columbia.John Gabriel Stedman's Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796) is laced with discussions of cruelty -- to slaves, to soldiers, even to monkeys. Throughout, Stedman prides himself on his empathy for all living creatures, showing his own pain, mental anguish, and revulsion at watching their suffering. However, Stedman's empathy seems intricately linked to the body -- in particular to bodily suffering. Thus, while the physically ill, injured, tortured, and raped all spark his sentimentality, Stedman seems oblivious to psychological trauma -- from forced labor, sexual coercion, or general subservience -- particularly in slaves. Though Stedman claims to "love the African" and to view Africans as his equals, and though he abhors the cruelties which they suffer by the lash, his empathy is limited by his relatively privileged social and economic status to the boundaries of the body
Valuable drops of gold : exploring economics in John Gabriel Stedman's Narrative of a five years expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam
The entire dissertation/thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file (which also appears in the research.pdf); a non-technical general description, or public abstract, appears in the public.pdf file.Title from title screen of research.pdf file (viewed on September 5, 2008)Thesis (M.A.) University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.Though John Gabriel Stedman's Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam is not completely unfamiliar to literary scholars studying eighteenth-century depictions of African chattel slavery, it has traditionally been used as context for studying other literature. This study aims to elevate Stedman's Narrative from context to text. As such, I first provide a framework for literary study of the Narrative and then begin exploring a central theme in the work: economics. Using a conflicted narrator who is troubled by his role as a mercenary soldier, Stedman demonstrates the difficulty of balancing ethics and economics. By juxtaposing the narrator's multiple and multivalent attempts to assess the value of his lover, I expose the underlying economic structure of their romantic relationship. I then discuss the ways in which the narrator grapples with other aspects of the economics of slavery. Ultimately, I argue that Stedman uses his narrator's failed attempts at making sense of his positions as a mercenary soldier and a moral agent to recreate the confusion inherent to trying to fully comprehend the repercussions of slavery.Includes bibliographical reference
Pengaruh Pemberian Air Perasan Buah Mengkudu (Morinda Citrifolia) terhadap Penurunan Tekanan Darah pada Penderita Hipertensi
Hypertension is an abnormal increase in blood pressure in arterial blood vessels continuously for more than one period. This occurs when the arterioles are constricting. Arteriole constriction makes blood difficult to flow and increases pressure against arterial walls. The prevalence of hypertension in West Sumatra province reaches 21.4%. Data from the Provincial Health Office of West Sumatra in 2017 hypertension is the 10 most common diseases suffered by the community with 69,500 people suffering from hypertension. Pharmacological therapies available for hypertension have not shown improvement in reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Very necessary companion therapy that is non-pharmacological treatment is expected to be able to complete pharmacological treatment in reducing blood pressure by using noni juice juice (Morinda Citrifolia). This study used the design of Quasy Experiment with the approach of group pretest posttest design. This research was carried out in the Belimbing Health Center Working Area The number of samples in this study were 10 respondents with purposive sampling technique. Data analysis in this study using univariate and bivariate using dependent t-test. The results obtained, the average systolic blood pressure of 12 mmHg with a value (p Value 0,000) and diastolic 5 mmHg (p Value 0.015) means that there is an influence on the average blood pressure before and after being given Noni juice.Based on the results of the research that has been obtained, it is expected that health workers through the head of the Puskesmas can apply or use Noni fruit juice as an alternative treatment for hypertension

Professional Nurse-Led Unjani Clinics: Empowering the Nurse Entrepreneur
South Africa, burdened by a wide wealth gap, meets the healthcare needs of the minority with health insurance but provides unreliable services for the uninsured. The uninsured clients suffer from long public clinic wait times and poor-quality care. The Unjani model was launched to provide high-quality affordable primary health care (PHC) to employed but uninsured families. Unjani aims to empower black women nurses as entrepreneurs and providers by providing them with shipping containers converted into world-class health clinics. Although nurses are central to the Unjani model, there is no published research describing their experience. I performed a qualitative study to identify the role of the nurse as PHC provider as well as facilitators and barriers to participating in the Unjani model. I conducted semi-structured interviews with ten Unjani nurses. I used thematic analysis to identify five themes. My results suggest that the Unjani nurses are invested, motivated, and proud to serve their community with a profit-generating high-quality PHC business. Furthermore, the Unjani model may be a powerful answer to global challenges in primary care access and quality

Ghost in the Closet: Other Voices, Other Rooms and the Queer Gothic Family
The young queer characters in Truman Capote\u27s Other Voices, Other Rooms—especially the protagonist, Joel Harrison Knox—is able to carve out a legitimate space for themselves within heteronormative society; however, they do not achieve full equality, and their fates may even be read as a reiteration of the status quo. I argue that the novel is less about individual queer actualization, but rather about establishing larger support structures for the queer community, particularly in the form of the specially chosen—or curated—family. In particular, Capote harnesses the tropes of Southern Gothicism by symbolizing family structures—both extant and burgeoning— Through a series of “haunted” houses that the queer protagonist must enter and explore
