Random walks of Wilson loops in the screening regime
Dynamics of Wilson loops in pure Yang-Mills theories is analyzed in terms of
random walks of the holonomies of the gauge field on the gauge group manifold.
It is shown that such random walks should necessarily be free. The distribution
of steps of these random walks is related to the spectrum of string tensions of
the theory and to certain cumulants of Yang-Mills curvature tensor. It turns
out that when colour charges are completely screened, the holonomies of the
gauge field can change only by the elements of the group center, which
indicates that in the screening regime confinement persists due to thin center
vortices. Thick center vortices are also considered and the emergence of such
stepwise changes in the limits of infinitely thin vortices and infinitely large

Single-step selection of drug resistant Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 mutants reveals a functional redundancy in the recruitment of multidrug efflux systems
Members of the genus Acinetobacter have been the focus recent attention due to both their clinical significance and application to molecular biology. The soil commensal bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 has been proposed as a model system for molecular and genetic studies, whereas in a clinical environment, Acinetobacter spp. are of increasing importance due to their propensity to cause serious and intractable systemic infections. Clinically, a major factor in the success of Acinetobacter spp. as opportunistic pathogens can be attributed to their ability to rapidly evolve resistance to common antimicrobial compounds. Whole genome sequencing of clinical and environmental Acinetobacter spp. isolates has revealed the presence of numerous multidrug transporters within the core and accessory genomes, suggesting that efflux is an important host defense response in this genus. In this work, we used the drug-susceptible organism A. baylyi ADP1 as a model for studies into the evolution of efflux mediated resistance in genus Acinetobacter, due to the high level of conservation of efflux determinants across four diverse Acinetobacter strains, including clinical isolates. A single exposure of therapeutic concentrations of chloramphenicol to populations of A. baylyi ADP1 cells produced five individual colonies displaying multidrug resistance. The major facilitator superfamily pump craA was upregulated in one mutant strain, whereas the resistance nodulation division pump adeJ was upregulated in the remaining four. Within the adeJ upregulated population, two different levels of adeJ mRNA transcription were observed, suggesting at least three separate mutations were selected after single-step exposure to chloramphenicol. In the craA upregulated strain, a T to G substitution 12 nt upstream of the craA translation initiation codon was observed. No First-Order Phase Transition in the Gross-Neveu Model?
Within a variational calculation we investigate the role of baryons for the
structure of dense matter in the Gross-Neveu model. We construct a trial ground
state at finite baryon density which breaks translational invariance. Its
scalar potential interpolates between widely spaced kinks and antikinks at low
density and the value zero at infinite density. Its energy is lower than the
one of the standard Fermi gas at all densities considered. This suggests that
the discrete gamma_5 symmetry of the Gross-Neveu model does not get restored in
a first order phase transition at finite density, at variance with common

Increasing and decreasing droplets velocity in micro channels
This paper deals with a specific aspect of non miscible liquid-liquid systems in microfluidic. For Chemical Engineering applications, the main constraints of functioning lies in the droplets velocity and frequency. Furthermore, the material used and the composition of the fluids is often imposed by the chemistry of the system (material resistance, fluids composition) and there is no possibility of adding other compound (surfactants for example). A technique under evaluation is presented: by using secondary channels and pumps, it is possible to increase or decrease at will the droplets velocity after they have been generated. Some experimental results are presented and discussed, including the possible limits of such an approach
Cadmium accumulation and interactions with zinc, copper, and manganese, analysed by ICP-MS in a long-term Caco-2 TC7 cell model
The influence of long-term exposure to cadmium (Cd) on essential minerals was investigated using a Caco-2
TC7 cells and a multi-analytical tool: microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
Intracellular levels, effects on cadmium accumulation, distribution, and reference concentration
ranges of the following elements were determined: Na, Mg, Ca, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Cd.
Results showed that Caco-2 TC7 cells incubated long-term with cadmium concentrations ranging from 0 to
10 lmol Cd/l for 5 weeks exhibited a significant increase in cadmium accumulation. Furthermore, this
accumulation was more marked in cells exposed long-term to cadmium compared with controls, and that
this exposure resulted in a significant accumulation of copper and zinc but not of the other elements
measured. Interactions of Cd with three elements: zinc, copper, and manganese were particularly studied.
Exposed to 30 lmol/l of the element, manganese showed the highest inhibition and copper the lowest on
cadmium intracellular accumulation but Zn, Cu, and Mn behave differently in terms of their mutual
competition with Cd. Indeed, increasing cadmium in the culture medium resulted in a gradual and significant
increase in the accumulation of zinc. There was a significant decrease in manganese from 5 lmol
Cd/l exposure, and no variation was observed with copper.

State-building, war and violence : evidence from Latin America
In European history, war has played a major role in state‐building and the state monopoly on violence. But war is a very specific form of organized political violence, and it is decreasing on a global scale. Other patterns of armed violence now dominate, ones that seem to undermine state‐building, thus preventing the replication of European experiences. As a consequence, the main focus of the current state‐building debate is on fragility and a lack of violence control inside these states. Evidence from Latin American history shows that the specific patterns of the termination of both war and violence are more important than the specific patterns of their organization. Hence these patterns can be conceptualized as a critical juncture for state‐building. While military victories in war, the subordination of competing armed actors and the prosecution of perpetrators are conducive for state‐building, negotiated settlements, coexistence, and impunity produce instability due to competing patterns of authority, legitimacy, and social cohesion
Resolution of inflammation: a new therapeutic frontier
Dysregulated inflammation is a central pathological process in diverse disease states. Traditionally, therapeutic approaches have sought to modulate the pro- or anti-inflammatory limbs of inflammation, with mixed success. However, insight into the pathways by which inflammation is resolved has highlighted novel opportunities to pharmacologically manipulate these processes — a strategy that might represent a complementary (and perhaps even superior) therapeutic approach. This Review discusses the state of the art in the biology of resolution of inflammation, highlighting the opportunities and challenges for translational research in this field
Self-rated treatment outcomes in medical rehabilitation among German and non-German nationals residing in Germany: an exploratory cross-sectional study

BMC HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH. 2016;16(1): 105.Background: In many European countries, foreign nationals experience, on average, less favorable treatment outcomes in rehabilitative care than the respective majority population. In Germany, this for example is reflected in a lower occupational performance and a higher risk of disability retirement after rehabilitation as analyses of routine data show. However, little is known about the perspective of health care users. The aim of the present study was to compare self-rated treatment outcomes between German and non-German nationals undergoing in-patient medical rehabilitation in Germany. Methods: We analyzed data from a cross-sectional representative rehabilitation patient survey of 239,811 patients from 642 clinics in Germany who completed about 3 weeks of in-patient rehabilitative treatment. The self-rating of the treatment outcome was based on a dichotomized Likert scale consisting of three items. A multilevel logistic regression analysis adjusted for various demographic, socio-economic, health and other covariates was conducted to examine differences in the self-rated treatment outcome between German and non-German nationals. Results: Of the 239,811 respondents 0.9 % were nationals from Turkey, 0.8 % had a nationality from a former Yugoslavian country, 0.9 % held a nationality from the South European countries Portugal, Spain, Italy or Greece and 1.9 % were nationals from other countries. Non-German nationals reported a less favorable self-rated outcome than Germans. Adjusted odds ratios [OR] for reporting a less favorable treatment outcome were 1.24 (95 %-confidence interval [95 %-CI]: 1.12-1.37) for nationals from the South European countries Portugal/Spain/Italy/Greece, 1.62 (95 %-CI: 1.45-1.80) for Turkish nationals and 1.68 (95 %-CI: 1.52-1.85) for nationals from Former Yugoslavia. Conclusions: Knowledge on health outcomes from the patients' point of view is important for the provision of patient-centered health care. Our study showed that non-German nationals report less favorable outcomes of rehabilitative care than Germans. This may be due to cultural and religious needs not sufficiently addressed by health care providers. In order to improve rehabilitative care for non-German nationals, rehabilitative services must become sensitive to the needs of this population group. Diversity management can contribute to this process
Probing shells against buckling: a non-destructive technique for laboratory testing
This paper addresses testing of compressed structures, such as shells, that
exhibit catastrophic buckling and notorious imperfection sensitivity. The
central concept is the probing of a loaded structural specimen by a controlled
lateral displacement to gain quantitative insight into its buckling behaviour
and to measure the energy barrier against buckling. This can provide design
information about a structure's stiffness and robustness against buckling in
terms of energy and force landscapes. Developments in this area are relatively
new but have proceeded rapidly with encouraging progress. Recent experimental
tests on uniformly compressed spherical shells, and axially loaded cylinders,
show excellent agreement with theoretical solutions. The probing technique
could be a valuable experimental procedure for testing prototype structures,
but before it can be used a range of potential problems must be examined and
solved. The probing response is highly nonlinear and a variety of complications
can occur. Here, we make a careful assessment of unexpected limit points and
bifurcations, that could accompany probing, causing complications and possibly
even collapse of a test specimen. First, a limit point in the probe
displacement (associated with a cusp instability and fold) can result in
dynamic buckling as probing progresses, as demonstrated in the buckling of a
spherical shell under volume control. Second, various types of bifurcations
which can occur on the probing path which result in the probing response
becoming unstable are also discussed. To overcome these problems, we outline
the extra controls over the entire structure that may be needed to stabilize
