Numerical Construction of LISS Lyapunov Functions under a Small Gain Condition
In the stability analysis of large-scale interconnected systems it is
frequently desirable to be able to determine a decay point of the gain
operator, i.e., a point whose image under the monotone operator is strictly
smaller than the point itself. The set of such decay points plays a crucial
role in checking, in a semi-global fashion, the local input-to-state stability
of an interconnected system and in the numerical construction of a LISS
Lyapunov function. We provide a homotopy algorithm that computes a decay point
of a monotone op- erator. For this purpose we use a fixed point algorithm and
provide a function whose fixed points correspond to decay points of the
monotone operator. The advantage to an earlier algorithm is demonstrated.
Furthermore an example is given which shows how to analyze a given perturbed

Feasibility of diagnosis of postcardiotomy tamponade by miniaturized transesophageal echocardiography.
BACKGROUND: Pericardial tamponade after cardiac surgery is a critical diagnosis that can be difficult to diagnose using conventional cardiac monitoring. Transesophageal echocardiography can provide comprehensive information to make the diagnosis but is not always available, whereas transthoracic echocardiography has its utility limited because of the body habitus or other surgical effects. New monitoring devices, miniaturized hemodynamic transesophageal echocardiography (hTEE), which allows point of care assessment of cardiac filling and functions, may aid in diagnosis of postcardiotomy tamponade.
METHODS: From May 2011 to July 2013, 21 patients underwent hTEE to rule out pericardial tamponade for clinical suspicion of tamponade after open heart surgery. The hTEE images were reviewed, and the patient outcomes were analyzed.
RESULTS: Nine patients showed no evidence of pericardial collection and did not require reexploration. Two patients showed a presence of small hematoma without ventricular compression and also did not undergo exploration. Ten patients were positive for pericardial tamponade (effusion or hematoma with ventricular compression); eight of these cases underwent emergent surgical exploration. Of the two patients who did not undergo immediate reoperation, one was managed by chest tube manipulation and the other patient underwent subsequent surgical exploration after his extensive coagulopathy was corrected by medical treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of pericardial tamponade postcardiotomy is feasible using a disposable hTEE based on our limited experience. We avoided unnecessary explorations while concomitantly made prompt diagnosis in emergent situations. The hTEE device was a valuable tool in hemodynamic management in the intensive care unit, allowing rapid evaluations

Spectrum and Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with exchange and hopping
We derive the spectrum and the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional
supersymmetric t-J model with long range hopping and spin exchange using a set
of maximal-spin eigenstates. This spectrum confirms the recent conjecture that
the asymptotic Bethe-ansatz spectrum is exact. By empirical determining the
spinon degeneracies of each state, we are able to explicitly construct the free

Identification and validation of oncologic miRNA biomarkers for Luminal A-like breast cancer
Introduction: Breast cancer is a common disease with distinct tumor subtypes phenotypically characterized by ER and HER2/neu receptor status. MiRNAs play regulatory roles in tumor initiation and progression, and altered miRNA expression has been demonstrated in a variety of cancer states presenting the potential for exploitation as cancer biomarkers. Blood provides an excellent medium for biomarker discovery. This study investigated systemic miRNAs differentially expressed in Luminal A-like (ER+PR+HER2/neu-) breast cancer and their effectiveness as oncologic biomarkers in the clinical setting. Methods: Blood samples were prospectively collected from patients with Luminal A-like breast cancer (n=54) and controls (n=56). RNA was extracted, reverse transcribed and subjected to microarray analysis (n=10 Luminal A-like; n=10 Control). Differentially expressed miRNAs were identified by artificial neural network (ANN) data-mining algorithms. Expression of specific miRNAs was validated by RQ-PCR (n=44 Luminal A; n=46 Control) and potential relationships between circulating miRNA levels and clinicopathological features of breast cancer were investigated. Results: Microarray analysis identified 76 differentially expressed miRNAs. ANN revealed 10 miRNAs for further analysis ( miR-19b, miR-29a, miR-93, miR-181a, miR-182, miR-223, miR-301a, miR-423-5p, miR-486-5 and miR-652 ). The biomarker potential of 4 miRNAs ( miR-29a, miR-181a , miR-223 and miR-652 ) was confirmed by RQ-PCR, with significantly reduced expression in blood of women with Luminal A-like breast tumors compared to healthy controls (p=0.001, 0.004, 0.009 and 0.004 respectively). Binary logistic regression confirmed that combination of 3 of these miRNAs ( miR-29a, miR-181a and miR-652 ) could reliably differentiate between cancers and controls with an AUC of 0.80. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the underlying molecular portrait of Luminal A-like breast cancer subtype. From an initial 76 miRNAs, 4 were validated with altered expression in the blood of women with Luminal A-like breast cancer. The expression profiles of these 3 miRNAs, in combination with mammography, has potential to facilitate accurate subtype- specific breast tumor detection

Gamma Lines without a Continuum: Thermal Models for the Fermi-LAT 130 GeV Gamma Line
Recent claims of a line in the Fermi-LAT photon spectrum at 130 GeV are
suggestive of dark matter annihilation in the galactic center and other dark
matter-dominated regions. If the Fermi feature is indeed due to dark matter
annihilation, the best-fit line cross-section, together with the lack of any
corresponding excess in continuum photons, poses an interesting puzzle for
models of thermal dark matter: the line cross-section is too large to be
generated radiatively from open Standard Model annihilation modes, and too
small to provide efficient dark matter annihilation in the early universe. We
discuss two mechanisms to solve this puzzle and illustrate each with a simple
reference model in which the dominant dark matter annihilation channel is
photonic final states. The first mechanism we employ is resonant annihilation,
which enhances the annihilation cross-section during freezeout and allows for a
sufficiently large present-day annihilation cross section. Second, we consider
cascade annihilation, with a hierarchy between p-wave and s-wave processes.
Both mechanisms require mass near-degeneracies and predict states with masses
closely related to the dark matter mass; resonant freezeout in addition
requires new charged particles at the TeV scale.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
