Symmetry reduction, integrability and reconstruction in k-symplectic field theory

We investigate the reduction process of a k-symplectic field theory whose Lagrangian is invariant under a symmetry group. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced partial differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare field equations. We discuss two issues about reconstructing a solution from a given solution of the reduced equations. The first one is an interpretation of the integrability conditions, in terms of the curvatures of some connections. The second includes the introduction of the concept of a k-connection to provide a reconstruction method. We show that an invariant Lagrangian, under suitable regularity conditions, defines a `mechanical' k-connection.Comment: 37 page

Symmetries, Newtonoids vector fields and conservation laws in the Lagrangian kk-symplectic formalism

In this paper we study symmetries, Newtonoid vector fields, conservation laws, Noether's Theorem and its converse, in the framework of the kk-symplectic formalism, using the Fr\"olicher-Nijenhuis formalism on the space of k1k^1-velocities of the configuration manifold. For the case k=1k=1, it is well known that Cartan symmetries induce and are induced by constants of motions, and these results are known as Noether's Theorem and its converse. For the case k>1k>1, we provide a new proof for Noether's Theorem, which shows that, in the kk-symplectic formalism, each Cartan symmetry induces a conservation law. We prove that, under some assumptions, the converse of Noether's Theorem is also true and we provide examples when this is not the case. We also study the relations between dynamical symmetries, Newtonoid vector fields, Cartan symmetries and conservation laws, showing when one of them will imply the others. We use several examples of partial differential equations to illustrate when these concepts are related and when they are not

Farmers' Knowledge of Cassava Streak Virus Disease in Selected Districts of Central Uganda

Cassava brown streak disease is one of the latest outbreaks of diseases threatening cassava production in Uganda. Although, previously reported in some parts of east African coast, CBSD was not a common problem in Uganda until over a decade ago. Since, its first reported outbreak in mid 2000s, CBSD has continued to spread in many cassava growing districts of Uganda. Cassava brown streak disease manifests as a syndrome characterised by leaf chlorosis, stem and root necrosis. The infected root tubers are unfit for human consumption. Therefore, the study was conducted to assess farmers' knowledge of CBSD in the selected districts in central Uganda. Semi-structure questionnaires were used to gather information from 180 respondents from the districts of Mukono, Masaka and Wakiso on the knowledge and perception of CBSD. The findings revealed that cassava was widely grown in the three districts. However, a number of constraints including pests and diseases were reported to be affecting cassava growing. Of the diseases, CBSD was ranked as the most widespread and devastating. In fact, 75% of the respondents had good knowledge of CBSD and perceive it as responsible for the declining cassava production in the districts. The most common symptoms associated with CBSD leaf chlorosis, rotting and necrosis of the root tubers. Both the old and newly introduced cassava varieties were susceptible to CBSD. Accordingly, CBSD was thought of as responsible for food insecurity, livelihoods and the loss of cassava biodiversity among others

In Popular Democracy: The Paradox of Participation, Gianpaolo Baiocchi and Ernesto Ganuza examine contemporary forms of participatory governance by tracing the origins and development of participatory budgeting (PB) from its roots in Porto Alegre, Brazil, to its adoption in two cases, Cordoba, Spain and Chicago, USA. While acknowledging that PB has been seen as being too easily co-opted by neoliberalism, the book's ..

Iucundus nominis error (Ov. Ars 3, 729). Procri rustica puella nell’Ars amatoria

    Get PDF

Dialkylcarbamoyl chloride (DACC)-coated dressings in the management and prevention of wound infection: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Objective: Dialkylcarbomoyl chloride (DACC)-coated dressings (Leukomed Sorbact and Cutimed Sorbact) irreversibly bind bacteria at the wound surface that are then removed when the dressing is changed. They are a recent addition to the wound care professional's armamentarium and have been used in a variety of acute and chronic wounds. This systematic review aims to assess the evidence supporting the use of DACC-coated dressings in the clinical environment. Method: We included all reports of the clinical use of DACC-coated dressings in relation to wound infection. Medline, Embase, CENTRAL and CINAHL databases were searched to September 2016 for studies evaluating the role of DACC-coated dressings in preventing or managing wound infections. Results: We identified 17 studies with a total of 3408 patients which were included in this review. The DACC-coating was suggested to reduce postoperative surgical site infection rates and result in chronic wounds that subjectively looked cleaner and had less bacterial load on microbiological assessments. Conclusion: Existing evidence for DACC-coated dressings in managing chronic wounds or as a surgical site infection (SSI) prophylaxis is limited but encouraging with evidence in support of DACC-coated dressings preventing and treating infection without adverse effects

It responds to the integration and collaboration principle between different health-care services. At the organizational level, continuity of care is the provision of services included in a management plan that uses a shared model of network work. Implementing the network between hospital and territory implies a radical cultural change, which shows many difficulties to be achieved in Italian reality. The complexity of this challenge is most evident in the management of end of life, especially for physicians. In this regard, in our study we posed the following research questions: As physicians represent the continuity between hospital and territory in the management of terminal patients? What are the cultural characteristics of the Hospital and Hospice? How it is treated the issue of the end of life? So, main objective of the research was to investigate the cultural models that organize the representations of physicians regarding continuity of care in the end of life. Through semi-structured interview, were interviewed 10 physicians (4 UOC of Medical Oncology Hospital, 4 of the 'Division of Emergency Medicine Hospital and 2 of hospice), operating in Umbria territory. The texts of the interviews were fully transcribed and analyzed through the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Overall, the findings highlight a offer of services to the terminal patient not included in a shared network and a culture of continuity of care still weak but strongly different in the two contexts. The handover process appears to be a formal practice, not built on the patient and family’s needs, and acted when the end of life is imminent. The function of the psychological profession is discussed, highlighting the need for its placement within the care team, not only with tasks of assistance to users but even on the facilitation of the working group processes and handover construction

This publication contains the full text of papers presented at a Workshop held in Masindi, Uganda, 9-12 January 1996, and sponsored by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. During the Workshop the need became evident for additional statistics on the multiplication, distribution and uptake of improved varieties of cassava in the six districts where activities are supported by The Gatsby Charitable Foundation and also elsewhere. The results of a subsequent survey in selected sub-counties of each of the six Gatsby districts are also presented here, together with estimates of the amount of improved material that has been distributed and the area now grown. These latest figures (Appendix 1) represent the best available estimates and in some instances differ substantially from those compiled and presented in the earlier district reports
