    Rumen Fermentation, Blood Metabolites, and Performance of Sheep Fed Tropical Browse Plants

    The in vitro study was designed to evaluate total gas production, dry matter degradability (DMD), and VFA profile; while in vivo study was designed to evaluate nutrient intakes, blood metabolites, and performance of sheep fed native grass mixed with Calliandra calothyrrus (CC), Leucaena leucochepala (LL), Moringa oleifera (MO), Gliricidea sepium (GS), and Artocarpus heterophyllus (AH). The best three from the in vitro results were used to formulate diets in in vivo study. Sixteen male growing sheep (average BW 20 kg) were fed 100% native grass (NG) as control; 70% NG + 30% GS; 70% NG + 30% MO; and 70% NG + 30% AH. Nutrient consumptions, DMD, blood metabolites, and sheep performances were analyzed by using Completely Randomized Design. The in vitro results showed that the total gas production and DMD of CC and LL were the lowest (P<0.05) while the highest was found in GS, MO, and AH treatments (P<0.05). Meanwhile, the in vivo results showed that nutrient intakes (DM, CP, and CF) of GS and AH rations were the highest. The ADG, concentration of albumin, and globulin in all treatments were similar, while total serum protein, triglycerides, and glucose concentration in MO and AH rations were higher than others. Serum cholesterol concentration in MO ration was the lowest, meanwhile the concentration of IgG was the highest (P<0.05). Supplementation of 30% MO was the best choice for optimum rumen fermentation and maintaining health status of local sheep

    Determining the optimal monetary policy instrument for Nigeria

    It is considered inapt for central banks to adjust reserve money (quantity of money) and interest rate (price of money) at the same time. Thus, necessitates the need for a choice instrument. Enough evidence abounds in microeconomic theory on the undesirability of manipulating both price and quantity simultaneously in a free market structure. The market, in line with the consensus among economists, either controls the price and allows quantity to be determined by market forces, or influence quantity, leaving prices in the hands of the forces of demand and supply. This paper is, therefore, an attempt to examine the optimal monetary policy instrument for Nigeria between 1981Q1 to 2013Q2 using a bounds testing approach to cointegration. The result indicates the superiority of monetary instrument, followed by combined instrument and then interest rate instrument. The study therefore suggests that the CBN should lay more emphasis on monetary instrument particularly if output growth or stability is the primary goal of monetary policy

    Excitonic condensation in quasi-two-dimensional systems

    We present a low energy model for the Bose-Einstein condensation in a quasi-two-dimensional excitonic gas. Using the flow equations of the Renormalization group and a Φ4\Phi^4 model with the dynamical critical exponent z=2z=2 we calculate the temperature dependence of the critical density, coherence length, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. The model can be relevant for the macroscopic coherence observed in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells.Comment: 4 Revtex page

    Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Sympathetic Crystallization of Molecular Ions

    It is shown that the translational degrees of freedom of a large variety of molecules, from light diatomic to heavy organic ones, can be cooled sympathetically and brought to rest (crystallized) in a linear Paul trap. The method relies on endowing the molecules with an appropriate positive charge, storage in a linear radiofrequency trap, and sympathetic cooling. Two well--known atomic coolant species, 9Be+{}^9{\hbox{Be}}^+ and 137Ba+{}^{137}{\hbox{Ba}}^+, are sufficient for cooling the molecular mass range from 2 to 20,000 amu. The large molecular charge required for simultaneous trapping of heavy molecules and of the coolant ions can easily be produced using electrospray ionization. Crystallized molecular ions offer vast opportunities for novel studies.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    In-situ ice and meteorological observations in the southern Sea of Okhotsk in 2001 winter: ice structure, snow on ice, surface temperature, and optical environments

    The 2001-ice season in the Sea of Okhotsk was characterized by extraordinarily developed ice extent. During the period February 17 to 21, we conducted in-situ observations in the southern ice area with the icebreaker \u27Soya\u27. In this paper, we show the observational results, concerning the core sampling of about 1.3 m-thick ice, snow sampling, surface temperature, and solar radiation under clear sky conditions. It is shown that (1) the sampled ice core is composed entirely of granular ice, (2) the 30 cm-thick snow pack overlying sea ice is composed mainly of depth hoar and significant vertical gradients of δ^O and temperature are found within the snow, probably associated with the depth hoar formation, (3) surface temperatures as low as about -30°C are detected on snow-covered sea ice floes at nighttime under almost clear and light breeze conditions, (4) from the estimation of the turbidity coefficient, the atmosphere over the ice-covered area is considered to be significantly clean. Furthermore, the NOAA/AVHRR satellite data are used to estimate the surface temperature distribution in the southern Sea of Okhotsk. It is shown that these data are useful for discriminating thick ice floes

    Instability Heating of Sympathetically-Cooled Ions in a Linear Paul Trap

    Sympathetic laser cooling of ions stored within a linear-geometry, radio frequency, electric-quadrupole trap has been investigated using computational and theoretical techniques. The simulation, which allows 5 sample ions to interact with 35 laser-cooled atomic ions, revealed an instability heating mechanism, which can prevent ions below a certain critical mass from being sympathetically cooled. This critical mass can however be varied by changing the trapping field parameters thus allowing ions with a very large range of masses to be sympathetically cooled using a single ion species. A theoretical explanation of this instability heating mechanism is presented which predicts that the cooling-heating boundary in trapping parameter space is a line of constant quq_u (ion trap stability coefficient), a result supported by the computational results. The threshold value of quq_u depends on the masses of the interacting ions. A functional form of this dependence is given

This study aims to identify, analyze, and describe dynamics and suitability of land for settlements in Padang. Determination of land suitablity for settlementis using Multi Criteria Evaluation (MCE) method. The indicators used in determining the suitability of land for settlement is the slope, the frequency of flooding, drainage, distrubusi gravel, rock distribution and effective depth. Weighting in the analysis of land suitability based on the opinions of experts from various fields related to as many as 15 experts. Analysis result for land suitability of settlements in the area show that: there were 12.543 ha (18%) very suitable for settlement; 52.390 ha (75,4%) were suitable for settletment; 4.279 ha (6,2%).were compatible with marginal for settlement; and 285 ha (0,8%) were unsuitable for settlement. The area is very suitable for residential areas is very limited, so expect optimal utilization

    Carbon Tetrachloride as Thermoporometry Liquid-probe to Study the Cross linking of Styrene Copolymer Networks

    Mesh Size Distributions (MSDs) of swollen cross linked styrene copolymer networks have been measured by thermoporometry using CCl4 as a probe liquid. All numerical relationships required for the calculation of the MSD were established for both the liquid-to-solid and the solid-to-solid thermal transitions of CCl4 and successfully validated on test samples. It was found that the polymer network, for both thermally and photo-cross linked materials, was completely built in about four hours of exposure. A clear correlation was established between the average mesh size of the swollen polymer network on the one hand and the benzoyl peroxide groups content and swelling ratio on the other hand
