    Magnetostatic bias in multilayer microwires: theory and experiments

    The hysteresis curves of multilayer microwires consisting of a soft magnetic nucleus, intermediate non-magnetic layers, and an external hard magnetic layer are investigated. The magnetostatic interaction between magnetic layers is proved to give rise to an antiferromagnetic-like coupling resulting in a magnetostatic bias in the hysteresis curves of the soft nucleus. This magnetostatic biasing effect is investigated in terms of the microwire geometry. The experimental results are interpreted considering an analytical model taking into account the magnetostatic interaction between the magnetic layers.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Bi-Metallic Magnetic Wire With Insulating Layer as Core for Orthogonal Fluxgate

    In this paper, we examine the problems related to orthogonal fluxgates realized using magnetic microwires as core. Starting from a description of orthogonal fluxgates evolution, we give a theoretical analysis of the problems involving the full saturation of the wire, necessary condition to obtain proper working conditions. Bi-metallic wires (magnetic layer on copper wire, carrying the excitation current) have been proposed to achieve full saturation using lower current. In this paper, we present a further improvement: we realized microwires with insulation layer between the copper wire and the magnetic layer. The current flows only into the copper, regardless of the working frequency. Using insulation layer, we achieve 20 mA saturation current at 10 kHz, which is 3 times smaller than for similar wires without insulation layer

    Magnetic anisotropy in ordered textured Co nanowires

The angular dependence of coercivity has been experimentally determined for different crystal textures, and the corresponding magnetization reversal mode is interpreted by analytical modelling. The results show that reversal takes place by propagation of a transverse-like domain wall mode. The fitting of experimental and calculated data allows us the quantitative evaluation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant strength whose magnetization easy direction evolves from parallel to the wires toward in-plane orientation with the change of hcp-phase textureThe project has been performed under bilateral Chile-Spain project 2010CL0018.     Fabrication and magnetic properties of hard/soft magnetostatically coupled FePt/FeNi multilayer microwires

The microwires consist of a Fe63Pt27Si10 hard magnetic nucleus and a Fe20Ni80 soft outer shell separated by an intermediate insulating Pyrex glass microtube. The precursor FePtSi glass-coated microwire is fabricated by quenching and drawing technique, and its L10 hard magnetic phase is grown by postannealing treatment technique. The polycrystalline FeNi soft magnetic outer shell has been deposited by electroplating. The analysis of the low-field hysteresis loops of the FeNi soft phase after premagnetizing until near magnetic saturation provides information about the magnetostatic coupling between phases. The FeNi magnetization curve is shifted toward positive field when the FePt remanent magnetization is positive and vice versa. A systematic analysis of the magnetostatic coupling and the corresponding bias field arising from uncompensated poles of the premagnetized FePt hard phase has been performed. The strength of the bias field is shown to increase with the reduction of thickness of the FeNi layer. These magnetostatically coupled biphase systems are thought to be of large potential interest as sensing elements in sensor devices.The work has been developed under the Project No. MAT2004-00150 supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, MEC.     Magnetic Microwires With Field-Induced Helical Anisotropy for Coil-Less Fluxgate

    We present a new method for production of magnetic microwire with helical anisotropy. Coil-less fluxgate sensors are generally composed of a bimetallic wire excited by an alternating current; in order for the wire to work in coil-less fluxgate mode, the magnetic layer of the wire needs to have helical anisotropy. So far, we have achieved such anisotropy by mechanically twisting the wire. However, this method has some disadvantages for practical applications, mainly regarding the sensor stability. We propose a method that provides helical anisotropy by applying a helical field during the electrodeposition: this is achieved by the superposition of a longitudinal field generated by a Helmholtz coil and a circumferential field produced by a direct current flowing through the core of the wire during electrodeposition

    Our senior design project entails designing, analyzing the front upper aerodynamic nose for the Formula SAE at VCU’s race team. Currently there are no provisions on the chassis to provide relief for parasitic loss of speed & efficiency due to drag. Since Formula SAE is focused on building a engineered, safe, and efficient vehicle our aerodynamic design will help with handling, downforce, and fuel economy all while reducing drag. Our Aerodynamic design will play a key role not only in how the Formula car is perceived aesthetically, but our calculations will be a large determining factor in the cars overall final performance. Our group started the project by initially consulting texts to better grasp knowledge on aerodynamic systems and their role in contributing to an efficient vehicle. With our research we were able to come up with numerous design considerations and gained more insight into how aerodynamics systems are analyzed. Once we conducted our background research we made some rough sketches of what we wanted the aero to look like. With these 2-D drawings we gathered equations necessary to calculate the drag coefficient and conducted a theoretical analysis of our 2D version to compare to our 3D calculations that will be solved using ANSYS. Our research showed us that the tear drop is generally thought to be the best shape so we based our drawings off of that consideration. Once we had a rough sketch, we started modeling the aero using an existing drawing of the chassis in Solidworks. At this stage we created a few different types of models so that in the future we would be able to quickly differentiate the aspects of our drawings that reduced the coefficient of drag. Moving forward with the project we expect to encounter many other problems associated with our design and analysis. However our aim is to narrow down our 3D designs and consider the aspects that reduced drag. This will allow us to come up with a further refined result. Once our data is analyzed we can conduct a comparison of our initial designs versus our final product and gain understanding as to what is needed to quickly and efficiently design aero in the future.     Socioeconomic factors and common mental health disorders: The role of gene-environment interplay

    This thesis aims to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying socioeconomic disparities in common mental health outcomes by investigating gene-environment interactions and the impact of selection bias in family data. Significant gaps exist in the literature regarding the moderating effects of socioeconomic status on the aetiology of mental health outcomes and the potential genetic overlap between family socioeconomic conditions and child mental health. Moreover, limited research has explored gene-environment interplay processes in lower- and middle-income populations. Additionally, selection bias in population- based cohort studies can compromise the validity of study results and potentially limit our understanding of the effects of socioeconomic conditions on mental health. Chapter 2 uses extended family data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Birth Cohort Study (MoBa) to examine how parental socioeconomic factors moderate the aetiological influences on child emotional and behavioural problems in the presence of gene- environment correlation. Chapter 3 investigates the influence of individual socioeconomic factors on depression symptoms in adults using data from the Colombo Twins and Singletons Study (CoTASS) in Sri Lanka, providing insights into the relationship between socioeconomic status and mental health outcomes in a South Asian context. Chapter 4 explores the impact of selection bias on phenotypic and genetic correlations within the MoBa cohort, assessing the potential biases introduced by selective participation. By addressing these gaps in the literature and considering the role of gene-environment interactions and selection bias, this thesis aims to advance our knowledge of the complex relationships between socioeconomic conditions and mental health outcomes. The findings have implications for interventions and policies targeting mental health disparities and promoting well-being across diverse populations
