FABRIC: A National-Scale Programmable Experimental Network Infrastructure
FABRIC is a unique national research infrastructure to enable cutting-edge and exploratory research at-scale in networking, cybersecurity, distributed computing and storage systems, machine learning, and science applications. It is an everywhere-programmable nationwide instrument comprised of novel extensible network elements equipped with large amounts of compute and storage, interconnected by high speed, dedicated optical links. It will connect a number of specialized testbeds for cloud research (NSF Cloud testbeds CloudLab and Chameleon), for research beyond 5G technologies (Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research or PAWR), as well as production high-performance computing facilities and science instruments to create a rich fabric for a wide variety of experimental activities
Using mosaic crystals for the generation of intense X-ray beams
The parametric X-ray (PXR) yield due to 500-MeV electrons in a 2-mm-thick diamond crystal with a mosaicity angle of ~0.2 mrad has been studied. It is shown that the mosaic crystal structure leads to a significant (about fourfold) increase in the PXR yield doe to the contribution of diffracted bremsstrahlung radiationye

Subthreshold and near-threshold kaon and antikaon production in proton-nucleus reactions
The differential production cross sections of K^+ and K^- mesons have been
measured at the ITEP proton synchrotron in p+Be, p+Cu collisions under lab
angle of 10.5^0, respectively, at 1.7 and 2.25, 2.4 GeV beam energies. A
detailed comparison of these data with the results of calculations within an
appropriate folding model for incoherent primary proton-nucleon, secondary
pion-nucleon kaon and antikaon production processes and processes associated
with the creation of antikaons via the decay of intermediate phi mesons is
given. We show that the strangeness exchange process YN->NNK^- gives a small
contribution to the antikaon yield in the kinematics of the performed
experiment. We argue that in the case when antikaon production processes are
dominated by the channels with KK^- in the final state, the cross sections of
the corresponding reactions are weakly influenced by the in-medium kaon and
antikaon mean fields.Comment: 24 pages. accepted for publication at J.Phys.
Experimental observation of parametric X-ray radiation directed along the propagation velocity of relativistic electrons in a tungsten crystal
Parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) due to dynamic diffraction of relativistic electrons is experimentally observed at small angles to the propagation velocity of electrons in a tungsten crystal. The specific features of the experimental method are described, and forward PXR reflections from two crystallographic planes of tungsten are reliably measuredyesBelgorod State Universit
Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering in Nuclei at x > 1 and the Nucleon Spectral Function
The nuclear structure function F_2A(x) has been studied in the Bjorken limit
for (l, l') scattering on nuclei in the region of x > 1 and was found to be
very sensitive to the information contained in the nucleon spectral function in
nuclei, particularly the correlations between momenta and energies in the
region of large momenta. Calculations were done in a local density
approximation using two different spectral functions for nuclear matter.
Results are compared to those obtained for a spectral function which has been
evaluated directly for the finite nucleus, ^{16}O, under consideration. For
values of x around 1.5 and larger the quasiparticle contribution is negligible,
thus stressing the sensitivity of the present reaction to the dynamical
properties of nuclei beyond the shell model approach. Several approximations
which are usually employed in studies of the EMC effect have been analyzed and
their inaccuracy in this region is demonstrated. The results stress the fact
that the nuclear structure function contains important information on nuclear
dynamical correlations. Therefore further measurements of F_2A(x) in that
region and for many nuclei would be most welcome.Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX, 11 PostScript figures, final version to appear in

The MINERA Data Acquisition System and Infrastructure
MINERA (Main INjector ExpeRiment -A) is a new few-GeV neutrino
cross section experiment that began taking data in the FNAL NuMI (Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam-line in
March of 2010. MINERA employs a fine-grained scintillator detector capable
of complete kinematic characterization of neutrino interactions. This paper
describes the MINERA data acquisition system (DAQ) including the read-out
electronics, software, and computing architecture.Comment: 34 pages, 16 figure
