Building 21st Century Skills Via Student Activities Program Using Web 2.0 and Google Tools
The workforce is in need of graduates who are strong in 21st century skills - collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. While teachers are working to implement these skills through incorporating technology into classrooms, teachers and students may not always know how to use the available Web 2.0 tools effectively. This can be seen not only in traditional academic classrooms, but also in extracurricular programs such as Student Activities. This paper focuses on the creation of the website Student Activities 2. 0. It was created in order to meet the need of Student Activities Directors, student leaders, and educators. It is a resource that teaches different ways to integrate technology into a Student Activities Program. Schools are transitioning from paper ballots and paper poster making to electronic ballots and digital posters. This trend is becoming the new way of student activities. Unfortunately, there are very few resources on how to use technology effectively in these programs. With the creation of Student Activities 2.0, there is finally a resource to guide student activities directors and student leaders in middle schools and high schools across the country in the development of 21st century skills
Actitudes y competencia percibida de los psicometristas hacia la teleevaluación psicológica en Filipinas
This study aims to determine the attitudes and perceived competence level of 64 Filipino registered psychometricians with prior experience in psychological tele-assessment to conduct this service for their present and future clientele. Researchers used the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) that connects attitude and mental health services and a five-theme framework that discusses the factors or needs in facilitating successful tele-assessment. The results revealed a predominantly positive attitude toward psychological tele-assessment yet with the emergence of contradicting appraisals. Most tended to agree on the benefits of tele-assessment in addressing mental health concerns, but concerns about its flexibility, privacy, confidentiality, rapport, and communication were salient. Respondents reported high openness to conducting tele-assessment in the future but recognized that this was more challenging than the traditional assessment. They evaluated themselves with low confidence and were somewhat knowledgeable about the ethical issues involved in this service. Results further indicated low perceived competence to conduct tele-assessment. They expressed the need for more training, specific local guidelines, access to technology, and available online tests for tele-assessment.

Interview with Mitchell Balingit
The interview was conducted by Bennit Miller, along with Victoria Isaev and Violet Cooney. The interview was about Mr. Balingit, a principal at Collins Elementary School, who shared his personal immigrant experience. Born in the Philippines in 1970, Mr. Balingit’s family moved to the United States in 1973 due to his grandfather\u27s academic ties with the University of Washington and the family\u27s desire for better healthcare and educational opportunities. They settled in Southern California, where Mr. Balingit grew up in a predominantly white school, often feeling pressured to conform to American norms to fit in. He recalls avoiding speaking his native language and cultural practices to blend in better with his peers, but over time, he grew more confident, especially during his college years at UC Berkeley.
Despite facing some discrimination and cultural challenges, particularly around his identity as an Asian-American, he eventually embraced his heritage. He describes how being in a multicultural environment, especially in his role as a principal, has allowed him to appreciate diversity and encourage inclusivity in others. Moving to Michigan in 2001, he sought a place where his multiracial family would be accepted, and found East Grand Rapids to be a good fit.
When reflecting on his family’s hopes when immigrating to America, Mr. Balingit emphasized the importance of financial and medical opportunities. He acknowledged that while the immigrant experience can be difficult, staying true to one\u27s culture and values is key to overcoming challenges. Mr. Balingit’s advice to anyone considering immigration is to be authentic, proud of their culture, and to find the right community that supports their growth. He regrets not embracing his cultural identity fully as a child but now encourages others to celebrate their heritage.
Overall, the interview highlighted the complexities of immigration, assimilation, and the importance of maintaining cultural pride in the face of societal pressures.https://scholarworks.wmich.edu/our-stories-aapi/1018/thumbnail.jp
Stigma and Attitudes of Mental Illness Among Accelerated Bachelors of Science Nursing Students
Stigma of mental illness is an ongoing issue in the community and healthcare that affects the mentally ill and their families. Nurses are treating people with mental illness in their practice in various settings. As nursing students are being introduced to the nursing profession, it is important have a clear conceptualization of mental illness. Stigma and attitudes about mental illness can be detrimental to a patient’s recovery. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in the attitudes and stigma of accelerated BSN students prior to and completion of a theory and clinical psychiatric mental health-nursing course. This study explored how exposure and education and clinical experience in psychiatric mental health nursing can effect change in attitudes of accelerated undergraduate nursing students about people with a mental illness. The research question was “Is there a positive difference between perceptions of stigma and attitudes of mental illness prior to and following completion of psychiatric mental health theory and clinical course?” A convenience sample was recruited from a southern California accelerated baccalaureate nursing program. A total of 71 students participated in the study before and after taking a mental health theoretical and practicum course. The instruments used to measure stigma of mental illness was the Community Attitudes of the Mentally Ill (CAMI) scale. The dependent variable of the stigma and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students using the CAMI scale did not show statistically significant results. Individual statements in the CAMI resulted in statistically significant difference

Iatrogenic Cushing’s Syndrome Caused by Adulteration of a Health Product with Dexamethasone
Background: Intake of glucocorticoids (GCs) may result in iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome. Objective: To describe a case of severe iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome caused by administration of a non-prescription drug adulterated with dexamethasone, and to alert physicians and public about harm associated with this product. Methods: PubMed and internet search up to July 24, 2022. Search terms are Cushing’s, glucocorticoids, adulteration, iatrogenic. Case reports, case series and review articles are included.Case report: A 54-year-old man presented with severe Cushinoid features. Laboratory work-up was consistent with exogenous source of GCs. Patient denied previous or current intake of GCs but reported taking a health product called “Artri-King” for knee pain. Inspection of this drug did not reveal any GCs among its ingredients. Yet, laboratory analysis performed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that this drug contains dexamethasone, which was not listed on the product label. Review of literature reveals that GC adulteration in Chinese health products is common. Among 61 patients who consumed GC-adulterated Chinese medicines, dexamethasone was implicated in 47.5%. Most subjects (62.3%) taking products with undeclared GCs had one or more complications attributed to GCs, 11.5% required admission to intensive care, and 3.3% died. In another series, iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome was the second clinical presentation of use of adulterated Chinese medicines occurring in 10.6% of cases, whereas psychosis was the first most frequent presentation (12.9% of cases).
Conclusion: In any case of iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome, discontinuation of supplemental health products is essential because many of these products may include undeclared GCs
The "plantito/plantita" home gardening during the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every segment of life, including health, economy, education, and social ecologies. Quarantine measures have forced people to stay inside their homes, leading to the “new normal” of living and adaptation. One activity that has been among Filipinos during the onset of the lockdown until the present time is the increased engagement in gardening. Home gardening suddenly became a widespread activity in rural and urban areas. The use of the words “plantito” [male] and “plantita” [female] denote someone who enjoys taking care of plants. This qualitative study aims to explore and describe the rise of home gardening among Filipinos during the pandemic. A total of 104 participants answered an online survey containing open-ended questions. They described a “plantito/plantita” as a plant lover and nurturer and reported home gardening as a way of connecting with nature, a psychological experience, and an interest. The benefits include stress relief and improved mood. Further studies on home gardening and mental health and possible opportunities to incorporate this activity in communities are warranted
