    The ERE of the "Red Rectangle" revisited

    Full text link
    We present in this paper high signal-to-noise long-slit optical spectra of the Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the "Red Rectangle" (RR) nebula. These spectra, obtained at different positions in the nebula, reveal an extremely complex emission pattern on top of the broad ERE continuum. It is well known that three features converge at large distance from the central object, in wavelength and profile to the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 5797, 5849.8 and 6614 ang., (e.g. Sarre et al., 1995). In this paper we give a detailed inventory of all spectral subfeatures observed in the 5550--6850 ang. spectral range. Thanks to our high S/N spectra, we propose 5 new features in the RR that can be associated with DIBs. For the 5550--6200 ang. spectral range our slit position was on top of the NE spike of the X shaped nebula. A detailed description of the spatial profile-changes is given of the strongest features revealing that even far out in the nebula at 24 arcsec from the central star, there remains a small shift in wavelength of 1 respectively 2 ang between the ERE subfeatures and the DIB wavelengths of 5797.11 and 5849.78 ang.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Investigating the Near-Infrared Properties of Planetary Nebula II. Medium Resolution Spectra

    Full text link
    We present medium-resolution (R~700) near-infrared (lambda = 1 - 2.5 micron) spectra of a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe). A narrow slit was used which sampled discrete locations within the nebulae; observations were obtained at one or more positions in the 41 objects included in the survey. The PN spectra fall into one of four general categories: H I emission line-dominated PNe, H I and H_2 emission line PNe, H_2-dominated PNe, and continuum-dominated PNe. These categories correlate with morphological type, with the elliptical PNe falling into the first group, and the bipolar PNe primarily in the H_2 and continuum emission groups. Other spectral features were observed in all categories, such as continuum emission from the central star, C_2, CN, and CO emission, and warm dust continuum emission. Molecular hydrogen was detected for the first time in four PNe. An excitation analysis was performed using the H_2 line ratios for all of the PN spectra in the survey where a sufficient number of lines were observed. One unexpected result from this analysis is that the H_2 is excited by absorption of ultraviolet photons in most of the PNe surveyed, although for several PNe in our survey collisional excitation in moderate velocity shocks plays an important role. The correlation between bipolar morphology and H_2 emission has been strengthened with the new detections of H_2 in this survey.Comment: 13 pages, 8 tables, 33 figure

    Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Lifetime b-tagging

    Get PDF
    We present a measurement of the top quark pair (ttˉt\bar{t}) production cross section (σttˉ\sigma_{t\bar{t}}) in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s=1.96\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV using 230 pb1^{-1} of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the ttˉt\bar{t} purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure σttˉ=8.61.5+1.6(stat.+syst.)±0.6(lumi.)\sigma_{t\bar{t}}=8.6^{+1.6}_{-1.5}(stat.+syst.)\pm 0.6(lumi.) pb, in agreement with the standard model expectation.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables Submitted to Phys.Rev.Let

    Direct Search for Charged Higgs Bosons in Decays of Top Quarks

    Get PDF
    We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using 62.2 pb^-1 of data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No evidence is found for signal, and we exclude at 95% confidence most regions of the (M higgs, tan beta) parameter space where the decay t->H b has a branching fraction greater than 0.36 and B(H -> tau nu) is large.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO)

    Get PDF
    AST/RO, a 1.7 m diameter telescope for astronomy and aeronomy studies at wavelengths between 200 and 2000 microns, was installed at the South Pole during the 1994-1995 Austral summer. The telescope operates continuously through the Austral winter, and is being used primarily for spectroscopic studies of neutral atomic carbon and carbon monoxide in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The South Pole environment is unique among observatory sites for unusually low wind speeds, low absolute humidity, and the consistent clarity of the submillimeter sky. Four heterodyne receivers, an array receiver, three acousto-optical spectrometers, and an array spectrometer are installed. A Fabry-Perot spectrometer using a bolometric array and a Terahertz receiver are in development. Telescope pointing, focus, and calibration methods as well as the unique working environment and logistical requirements of the South Pole are described.Comment: 57 pages, 15 figures. Theater en het individu

    Het boek Dialogen van Claire Parnet en Gilles Deleuze is het vertrekpunt van deze scriptie. Aan de hand van een introductie en beschrijving van een immanent theater en een uiteenzetting van het denken van Deleuze aangaande individu en identiteit, wordt het boek Dialogen gebruikt om een kritiek te vormen op het representatieve theater. Dialogen is als theatrale figuur op te vatten en vanuit dit oogpunt vormt het een mogelijke kritiek op representatieve theatrale figuren. Doordat het boek de titel Dialogen draagt, maar tegelijkertijd niet te vatten is in de traditionele opvatting van een dialoog, kan worden gesteld dat dit boek een nieuw potentieel van dit theatrale figuur (de dialoog) wil actualiseren. Het boek is niet een representatie van een dialoog op schrift, maar is juist een boek dat actief produceert. Deze scriptie concludeert vanuit dit oogpunt dat een immanente vorm van theater en theatrale figuren een nieuw potentieel kan actualiseren daar waar representatieve theatrale vormen dit niet kunnen

    Using the data accumulated in 2002-2004 with the DO detector in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with centre-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV, the branching fractions of the decays B -> \bar{D}_1^0(2420) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X and B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0}(2460) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X and their ratio have been measured: BR(\bar{b}->B) \cdot BR(B-> \bar{D}_1^0 \mu^+ \nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_1^0 -> D*- pi+) = (0.087+-0.007(stat)+-0.014(syst))%; BR(\bar{b}->B)\cdot BR(B->D_2^{*0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_2^{*0} -> D*- \pi^+) = (0.035+-0.007(stat)+-0.008(syst))%; and (BR(B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X)BR(D2*0->D*- pi+)) / (BR(B -> \bar{D}_1^{0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X)\cdot BR(\bar{D}_1^{0}->D*- \pi^+)) = 0.39+-0.09(stat)+-0.12(syst), where the charge conjugated states are always implied.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Search for Electroweak Production of Single Top Quarks in ppbar Collisions

    We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ~90 pb^-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X is 58 pb.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. This is the published versio

    Ratio of the Isolated Photon Cross Sections at \sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV

    Get PDF
    The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in \pbarp collisions at s=630\sqrt{s} = 630 GeV with the \D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (ETE_T) range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity η<2.5|\eta| < 2.5. This measurement is combined with to previous \D0 result at s=1800\sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the ETE_T range.Comment: 7 pages.
