Institutional Philanthropy: A Focus On Disability
In the context of the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the European Foundation Centre undertook a survey of its members and other institutional philanthropy actors who are funding, supporting, advocating, and partnering to advance the situation of people with disabilities in Europe and beyond, including those with disabilities related to ageing. This publication summarises the survey results which provide an up-to-date picture of EFC members and other funders active in the field of disability, whether it is part of their core mission or just one of their fields of action, and an insight to better understand their practices. The survey results are based on input from 34 philanthropic organisations. Data supplied refers to the year 2015 unless otherwise specified. The report comprises two parts:Part 1: A profile of this sample of disability funders, addressing in particular who they are, their main area(s) of focus, who they support, how they work, and if they cooperate and why.Part 2: A snapshot of 24 initiatives and projects supported by these organisations to illustrate some of their disability-related work, outlining their approach and achievements, as well as some challenges and learnings. This publication was produced with the support of the EFC's Disability Thematic Network (DTN). Network members include: King Baudouin Foundation, Essl Foundation, Fundacion Once, Fondazione Bianca del Monte di Lucca, Genio, Karuna Foundation, Light for the world, and Sabanci Vakfi
Identification of potential marker genes for Trichoderma harzianum strains with high antagonistic potential against Rhizoctonia solani by a rapid subtraction hybridization approach
A rapid subtraction hybridization approach was used to isolate genes differentially expressed during mycelial contact between
Trichoderma harzianum (Hypocrea lixii) and Rhizoctonia solani, and could serve as marker genes for selection of superior biocontrol strains. Putatively positive clones were evaluated
by transcription analysis during mycelial contact with R. solani versus growth on glucose, and for their differential transcription between two strains with either strong or poor biocontrol
capability before, at, and after contact with R. solani. Besides four clones, which had similarity to putative but as yet uncharacterized proteins, they comprised ribosomal proteins,
proteins involved in transcriptional switch and regulation, amino acid and energy catabolism, multidrug resistance, and degradation
of proteins and glucans. Transcription of three clones was evaluated in five T. harzianum strains under confrontation conditions with R. solani. Two clones—acetyl-xylane esterase AXE1 and endoglucanase Cel61b—showed significant upregulation during in vivo confrontation
of a T. harzianum strain that successively demonstrated a very high antagonistic capability towards R. solani, while expression was progressively lower in a series of T. harzianum strains with intermediate to poor antagonistic activity. These clones are promising candidates for use as markers in the
screening of improved T. harzianum biocontrol strains
This article connects the financial capacity of the public finance of the city of Alicante in order to provide street lightening, between 1815 and 1874, with its repercussions on the process of industrialization. The work deals with the rules that regulate this service, forms of management and the technological impact of the industrialization. It comes to the conclusion that the insufficient financial level of this institutional consumer caused a high debt. It was responsible, to a large extent, for the loss of capital of the individuals and the enterprises offering that service, especially the gas producing factories and therefore, could have an influence in the delay of the industrialization process.Publicad
How Palestinian students invoke the category ‘human’ to challenge negative treatment and media representations
Dehumanization of opponents in conflict has been shown to be a common and damaging feature in the media. What is not understood is how this dehumanization is challenged which is the novel contribution that this research will make. Drawing on focus groups (four focus groups each with four-six participants) conducted in the West Bank in 2015 that discussed media coverage of international conflict, this article demonstrates the ways in which young Palestinian participants attempt to rehumanize themselves in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Discursive analysis demonstrates how this was achieved in a number of ways: categorizing Palestinians as ‘human being’; by directly and explicitly challenging the suggestion that Palestinians are less than human; by drawing the enemy into the category ‘human’; and by embodying the ‘human’. These findings, the first to address the talk of young Palestinians about the reporting of violent conflicts around the world, demonstrate the importance of categorization and how, in this case, the specifics of the use of the (human) category work to rehumanize Palestinians in the face of (claims of) dehumanization

Breaking Down Grant Making Silos: Disability as a Cross-Programme Initiative
Increasingly, foundations talk about ways of breaking down silos in their grant making approaches in order to step away from the single-issue focus to improve effectiveness and to achieve long lasting solutions to deep rooted problems. In this framework, the effort of many foundations that are taking action to breaking down those silos by developing joint grants across different priority areas is remarkable. This publication's main aim is to communicate these greatest efforts to provide a source of reflection and inspiration for foundations. Since we are working in a systemic framework, it would be ineffective to address disability without acknowledging its relationships with gender equality, education, employment, ageing, research, cooperation and development. This booklet aims also to demonstrate through a solution-based approach, the broadness of foundational programs in the field of disability that also have a clear focus on social innovation. The best practices showcased show how foundations consider disability a cross-cutting and inclusive issue, integrating it into programs that reach out not only persons with disabilities but connect them with very different fields of civil society. This practical tool can serve as an inspiration for other foundations to act taking into consideration the cross-cutting approach

The Squale Model - A Practice-based Industrial Quality Model
International audienceISO 9126 promotes a three-level model of quality (fac- tors, criteria, and metrics) which allows one to assess qual- ity at the top level of factors and criteria. However, it is dif- ficult to use this model as a tool to increase software quality. In the Squale model, we add practices as an intermediate level between metrics and criteria. Practices abstract away from raw information (metrics, tool reports, audits) and provide technical guidelines to respect. Moreover, practice marks are adjusted using formulae to suit company development habits or exigences: for example bad marks are stressed to point to places which need more attention. The Squale model has been developed and validated over the last couple of years in an industrial setting with Air France-KLM and PSA Peugeot-Citroën
