    Diversity and evolution of the Confuciusornithidae: Evidence from a new 131- million-year-old specimen from the Huajiying Formation in NE China

    The Huajiying Formation contains the earliest deposits of the Jehol Biota, representing the world’s second oldest avifauna. This avifauna includes the early confuciusornithid Eoconfuciusornis zhengi, the oldest occurrence of this clade and one of the earliest divergences of pygostylian birds. Although E. zhengi shows unique traits, the holotype’s immature age makes comparisons with the better known Confuciusornis sanctus problematic. As a result, the taxonomic validity of E. zhengi is controversial. We describe a small, osteologically adult confuciusornithid from the same deposits as E. zhengi. The new fossil is most similar to E. zhengi but also shares traits with the stratigraphically younger Confuciusornis. The humerus of the new fossil is straighter and more slender, and bears a less dorsally-developed deltopectoral crest compared with similarly-sized and smaller specimens of Confuciusornis. The morphology of the humerus is intermediate between E. zhengi and Confuciusornis and its proximal portion is pierced by a small deltopectoral foramen, absent in the holotype of E. zhengi. However, this foramen is much smaller than in any other confuciusornithid. Shape analyses (geometric morphometrics) of the humerus of confuciusornithids of different ages and representatives of other basal avians and closely-related non-avian theropods supports our observations and indicate that the humeral differences between the holotype of E. zhengi and the new specimen are not easily explained as ontogenetic variation within a single species. However, the limited number of early confuciursornithids does not allow us to confidently interpret such differences as interspecific. Nonetheless, these analyses support the morphological distinctiveness of the early confuciusornithids from the Huajiying Formation and suggest a stepwise acquisition of the unique humeral morphology of ConfuciusornithidaeGN is supported by a PG Scholarship/Studentship from The Alumni Foundation, University of Bristol, UK.     Identification and validation of senescence-related genes in circulating endothelial cells of patients with acute myocardial infarction

    BackgroundAcute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the main clinical cause of death and cardiovascular disease and thus has high rates of morbidity and mortality. The increase in cardiovascular disease with aging is partly the result of vascular endothelial cell senescence and associated vascular dysfunction. This study was performed to identify potential key cellular senescence-related genes (SRGs) as biomarkers for the diagnosis of AMI using bioinformatics.MethodsUsing the CellAge database, we identified cellular SRGs. GSE66360 and GSE48060 for AMI patients and healthy controls and GSE19322 for mice were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The GSE66360 dataset was divided into a training set and a validation set. The GSE48060 dataset was used as another validation set. The GSE19322 dataset was used to explore the evolution of the screened diagnostic markers in the dynamic process of AMI. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of AMI were identified from the GSE66360 training set. Differentially expressed senescence-related genes (DESRGs) selected from SRGs and DEGs were analyzed using Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. Hub genes in DESRGs were selected based on degree, and diagnostic genes were further screened by gene expression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Finally, a miRNA-gene network of diagnostic genes was constructed and targeted drug prediction was performed.ResultsA total of 520 DEGs were screened from the GSE66360 training set, and 279 SRGs were identified from the CellAge database. The overlapping DEGs and SRGs constituted 14 DESRGs, including 4 senescence suppressor genes and 10 senescence inducible genes. The top 10 hub genes, including FOS, MMP9, CEBPB, CDKN1A, CXCL1, ETS2, BCL6, SGK1, ZFP36, and IGFBP3, were screened. Furthermore, three diagnostic genes were identified: MMP9, ETS2, and BCL6. The ROC analysis showed that the respective area under the curves (AUCs) of MMP9, ETS2, and BCL6 were 0.786, 0.848, and 0.852 in the GSE66360 validation set and 0.708, 0.791, and 0.727 in the GSE48060 dataset. In the GSE19322 dataset, MMP9 (AUC, 0.888) and ETS2 (AUC, 0.929) had very high diagnostic values in the early stage of AMI. Finally, based on these three diagnostic genes, we found that drugs such as acetylcysteine and genistein may be targeted for the treatment of age-related AMI.ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that cellular SRGs might play an important role in AMI. MMP9, ETS2, and BCL6 have potential as specific biomarkers for the early diagnosis of AMI

    FAF: A novel multimodal emotion recognition approach integrating face, body and text

    Multimodal emotion analysis performed better in emotion recognition depending on more comprehensive emotional clues and multimodal emotion dataset. In this paper, we developed a large multimodal emotion dataset, named "HED" dataset, to facilitate the emotion recognition task, and accordingly propose a multimodal emotion recognition method. To promote recognition accuracy, "Feature After Feature" framework was used to explore crucial emotional information from the aligned face, body and text samples. We employ various benchmarks to evaluate the "HED" dataset and compare the performance with our method. The results show that the five classification accuracy of the proposed multimodal fusion method is about 83.75%, and the performance is improved by 1.83%, 9.38%, and 21.62% respectively compared with that of individual modalities. The complementarity between each channel is effectively used to improve the performance of emotion recognition.     Habitat quality assessment and multi-scenario prediction of the Gansu-Qinghai section of the Yellow River Basin based on the FLUS-InVEST model

    Research on the impact of land use change on regional habitat quality, in various future scenarios, can effectively aid planning and decision-making for sustainable development at a regional level. The study conducted its research in the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River section and used ArcGIS and a land use transfer matrix to analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of land use and land cover changes. The study assessed the changes in habitat quality in the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River region between 1990 and 2020, using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model, by evaluating the gains and losses. Simultaneously, 15 elements of the natural economy were chosen and examined for their temporal and spatial impact on habitat quality using the random forest model and spatially weighted regression model. To forecast land use changes in the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River section for 2030, the Future Land Use Simulation Model (FLUS) model was utilized and a series of four scenarios (cultivated land protection scenario, ecological protection scenario, natural development scenario, and rapid development scenario) were employed. The research results indicate that over 70% of the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River is occupied by grasslands, and only a small portion of the area, about 0.22%, is developed for construction purposes. The quality of the habitat in the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River had a minor drop between 1990 and 2020, followed by an improvement. Habitat quality changes are primarily attributed to improvements, with variations across different areas, i.e., enhanced in the east and reduced in the central and western parts. The habitat quality of the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River has improved in all four scenarios compared to 2020, as evidenced by the decrease in low-value habitats and increase in high-value areas. The ecological protection scenario has the highest average habitat quality value. These research results can be used to support policy development and ecological restoration initiatives in the Gansu-Qinghai Yellow River

    Quasi-Two-Dimensional Fermi Surface and Heavy Quasiparticles in CeRh2As2

    The recent discovery of multiple superconducting phases in CeRh2As2 has attracted considerable interest. These rich phases are thought to be related to the locally noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, although the possible role of a quadrupole density wave preceding the superconductivity remains an open question. While measurements of physical properties imply that the Ce 4f electrons could play an essential role, the momentum-resolved electronic structure remains hitherto unreported, hindering an in-depth understanding of the underlying physics. Here, we report a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission study of CeRh2As2. Our results reveal fine splittings of conduction bands, which are directly related to the locally noncentrosymmetric structure, as well as a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, implying weak interlayer hopping and possible nesting instabilities. Our experiments also uncover the fine structures and pronounced temperature evolution of the Kondo peak, demonstrating strong Kondo effect facilitated by excited crystal electric field states. Our results unveil the salient electronic features arising from the interplay between the crystal structure and strong electron correlation, providing spectroscopic insight for understanding the heavy fermion physics and unconventional quadrupole density wave in this enigmatic compound

    Serum Neuroactive Metabolites of the Tryptophan Pathway in Patients With Acute Phase of Affective Disorders

    BACKGROUND: Many studies showed disrupted tryptophan metabolism in patients with affective disorders. The aims of this study were to explore the differences in the metabolites of tryptophan pathway (TP) and the relationships between TP metabolites and clinical symptoms, therapeutic effect in patients with bipolar disorder with acute manic episode (BD-M), depressive episode (BD-D) and major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Patients with BD-M (n=52) and BD-D (n=39), MDD (n=48) and healthy controls (HCs, n=49) were enrolled. The serum neuroactive metabolites levels of the TP were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Hamilton Depression Scale-17 item (HAMD-17) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) were used to evaluate depressive and manic symptoms at baseline and after 8 weeks of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, some also received antipsychotic medication. RESULTS: The levels of tryptophan (TRP) and kynurenic acid (KYNA) were significantly lower and the ratios of tryptophan/kynurenine (TRP/KYN), 5-hydroxytryptamine/tryptophan (5-HT/TRP), quinolinic acid/kynurenic acid (QUIN/KYNA) were higher in BD-M, BD-D, MDD vs. HC. The levels of QUIN and the ratios of QUIN/KYNA were higher in BD-M than in BD-D, MDD, and HCs. The 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels of patients with MDD were significantly higher than those in BD-M and BD-D. Binary logistic regression analysis showed the lower peripheral KYNA, the higher the QUIN level, and the higher the risk of BD-M; the lower peripheral KYNA and the higher KYN/TRP and 5-HT/TRP, the higher the risk of BD-D; and the lower the peripheral KYNA level and the higher the KYN/TRP and 5-HT/TRP, the higher the risk of MDD. Correlation analysis, showing a significant association between tryptophan metabolites and improvement of clinical symptoms, especially depression symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with affective disorders had abnormal tryptophan metabolism, which involved in 5-HT and kynurenine pathway (KP) sub-pathway. Tryptophan metabolites might be potential biomarkers for affective disorders and some metabolites have been associated with remission of depressive symptoms

    High-quality genome assembly and comparative genomic profiling of yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolia) revealed environmental adaptation footprints and seed oil contents variations

    Yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolia) is a species of deciduous tree that is native to Northern and Central China, including Loess Plateau. The yellowhorn tree is a hardy plant, tolerating a wide range of growing conditions, and is often grown for ornamental purposes in parks, gardens, and other landscaped areas. The seeds of yellowhorn are edible and contain rich oil and fatty acid contents, making it an ideal plant for oil production. However, the mechanism of its ability to adapt to extreme environments and the genetic basis of oil synthesis remains to be elucidated. In this study, we reported a high-quality and near gap-less yellowhorn genome assembly, containing the highest genome continuity with a contig N50 of 32.5 Mb. Comparative genomics analysis showed that 1,237 and 231 gene families under expansion and the yellowhorn-specific gene family NB-ARC were enriched in photosynthesis and root cap development, which may contribute to the environmental adaption and abiotic stress resistance of yellowhorn. A 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase (KAT) gene (Xso_LG02_00600) was identified under positive selection, which may be associated with variations of seed oil content among different yellowhorn cultivars.
