A convergence rates result for an iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton-Halley method in Banach space

The use of second order information on the forward operator often comes at a very moderate additional computational price in the context of parameter identification probems for differential equation models. On the other hand the use of general (non-Hilbert) Banach spaces has recently found much interest due to its usefulness in many applications. This motivates us to extend the second order method previously considered by the author in a Hilbert space setting, (see also Hettlich and Rundell 2000) to a Banach space setting and analyze its convergence. We here show rates results for a particular source condition and different exponents in the formulation of Tikhonov regularization in each step. This includes a complementary result on the (first order) iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method (IRGNM) in case of a one-homogeneous data misfit term, which corresponds to exact penalization. The results clearly show the possible advantages of using second order information, which get most pronounced in this exact penalization case. Numerical simulations for a coefficient identification problem in an elliptic PDE illustrate the theoretical findings

ACL and God’s Call to Librarianship

Many people have asked me how, as a librarian in a secular institution, I became so involved in ACL. I have been at Auburn University Libraries since 1978, but before that was at a Christian liberal arts college, now defunct. ACL has been part of my life since the early 70’s and, of all the professional organizations to which I have belonged, it is the one that has had the greatest effect on me personally

The Christian Periodical Index, ACL’s Longest Service Project

When the Christian Librarians’ Fellowship (CLF) was first formed in 1956, those early librarians were not just focused on their own needs, but they were also concerned with the information needs of students at Christian institutions. Part of their earliest vision was the establishment of the Christian Periodical Index (CPI).And so began a project which continues to the present day. It has far exceeded anyone’s vision at the time if its creation. Who knew about the coming explosion of publishing – to say nothing about the Internet! Yet the mission of CPI – to provide access to English language articles and reviews from an evangelical perspective – has not changed in 50 years, though it has broadened its target group from the original CLF membership

J/ψ\psi and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) measurement in p+p collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 200 and 500 GeV with the STAR experiment

In this paper, results on the J/psi cross section and polarization measured via the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity in p+p collisions at 200 and 500 GeV in the STAR experiment are discussed. Also, first measurements of the J/psi production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity density and of psi(2S) to J/psi ratio at 500 GeV are reported.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings for Strangeness in Quark Matter 2015 conference, July 6-11, 2015, Dubna, Russi

[Review of] Paul Lauter, et aI, eds. The Heath Anthology of American Literature

    Get PDF
For years editors of standard American literature anthologies have presented undergraduates with a narrow view of the American literary experience. Their anthologies have reflected the predominant view of the academy, which has maintained a traditional literary canon denying the importance of works by women and ethnic authors. This denial has sparked controversy and gained national media attention, resulting in gradual changes in curricula at many universities, including Stanford. As the climate of the undergraduate classroom changes and reflects a wider vision, so must the anthologies used in the classroom. The recently published Heath Anthology of American Literature is just such a work. It challenges convention and invites reevaluation of the standard American literary canon

    Bochner's technique for statistical structures

The main aim of this paper is to extend Bochner's technique to statistical structures. Other topics related to this technique are also introduced to the theory of statistical structures. It deals, in particular, with Hodge's theory, Bochner-Weitzenbock and Simon's type formulas. Moreover, a few global and local theorems on the geometry of statistical structures are proved, for instance, theorems saying that under some topological and geometrical conditions a statistical structure must be trivial. We also introduce a new concept of sectional curvature depending on statistical connections. On the base of this notion we study the curvature operator and prove some analogues of well-known theorems from Riemannian geometry
