Electricity markets: Designing auctions where suppliers have uncertain costs

    Get PDF
We analyse how the market design influences the bidding behaviour in multi-unit auctions, such as wholesale electricity markets. It is shown that competition improves for increased market transparency and we identify circumstances where the auctioneer prefers uniform to discriminatory pricing. We note that political risks could significantly worsen competition in hydro-dominated markets. It would be beneficial for such markets to have clearly defined contingency plans for extreme market situations.market transparenc

It was only a matter of time : occurrence of Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh var. distichophylla (Sonder) Verlaque, Huisman and Procaccini in the Maltese Islands (Chlorophyta, Ulvophyceae, Caulerpaceae)

A new alien species of Caulerpa, corresponding morphologically to Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh var. distichophylla (Sonder) Verlaque, Huisman and Procaccini, already known from Turkey, Sicily, and Cyprus, was first discovered in Malta in June 2013. The original record was of but a few fronds, and surveys made during winter at the same site did not locate any plants. A survey conducted during July 2014, however, located two patches of the alga occupying a total area of ca 125m2 in the 4–6m depth range, with a mean frond density of 276.3 (± 51.21 SD) per m2. Also in July 2014, two patches with a total of 520 fronds in an area of 0.37m2 at 14–15m depth were found at a second site ca 7.4 km along-coast distance from the first site. The alien algae formed part of a photophilic assemblage growing on rock in clearings adjacent to Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile stands. The most likely source of the Maltese populations is Sicily, and the most likely vector is recreational and/or commercial shipping.peer-reviewe

Proinflammatory cytokines in acute myocardial infarction with and without cardiogenic shock

    Get PDF
Background: Inflammatory response is an important feature of acute coronary syndromes and myocardial infarction (MI). The prognostic value of proinflammatory cytokines in patients with acute MI complicated by cardiogenic shock is unknown. Methods and results: In 41 patients admitted with acute MI (age 60 ± 11 years, six females, 19 Killip class IV) serial plasma concentration of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) were measured. Seven patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) developed a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Patients with CS—particularly those who developed SIRS—showed significantly higher cytokine levels than patients with uncomplicated MI. In patients with CS and SIRS peak levels of IL-1Ra were 223,973 pg/ml, IL-6 252.8 pg/ml and TNF-α 7.0 pg/ml. In CS without SIRS IL-1Ra levels were 19,988 pg/ml, IL-6 109.3 pg/ml and TNF-α 3.8 pg/ml. In uncomplicated MI peak IL-1Ra levels were 1,088 pg/ml, IL-6 34.1 pg/ml and TNF-α 2.6 pg/ml. Conclusions: The inflammation-associated cytokines TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1Ra are significantly elevated in patients with MI complicated by CS when compared to patients with uncomplicated MI. Among shock-patients IL-1Ra levels are promising diagnostic markers for early identification of patients developing SIRS, heralding a poor outcom

Challenges and successes in the implementation of option B+ to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in southern Swaziland.

BACKGROUND: Universal antiretroviral therapy (ART) for all pregnant/ breastfeeding women living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), known as Prevention of mother-to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) Option B+ (PMTCTB+), is being scaled up in most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the transition to PMTCTB+, many countries face challenges with proper implementation of the HIV care cascade. We aimed to describe the feasibility of a PMTCTB+ approach in the public health sector in Swaziland. METHODS: Lifelong ART was offered to a cohort of HIV+ pregnant women aged ≥16 years at the first antenatal care (ANC1) visit in 9 public sector facilities, between 01/2013 and 06/2014. The study enrolment period was divided into 3 phases (early: 01-06/2013, mid: 07-12/2013 and late: 01-06/2014) to account for temporal trends. Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional-hazards regression models were applied for ART initiation and attrition analyses. RESULTS: Of 665 HIV+ pregnant women, 496 (74.6%) initiated ART. ART initiation increased in later study enrolment phases (mid: aHR: 1.41; later: aHR: 2.36), and decreased at CD4 ≥ 500 (aHR: 0.69). 52.9% were retained in care at 24 months. Attrition was associated with ANC1 in the third trimester (aHR: 2.37), attending a secondary care facility (aHR: 1.98) and ART initiation during later enrolment phases (mid aHR: 1.48; late aHR: 1.67). Of 373 women eligible, 67.3% received a first VL. 223/251 (88.8%) were virologically suppressed (< 1000 copies/mL). Of 670 infants, 53.6% received an EID test, 320/359 had a test result recorded and of whom 7 (2.2%) were HIV+. CONCLUSIONS: PMTCTB+ was found to be feasible in this setting, with high rates of maternal viral suppression and low transmission to the infant. High treatment attrition, poor follow-up of mother-baby pairs and under-utilisation of VL and EID testing are important programmatic challenges

Visual evoked potential analysis on phenomenal brightness increase through yellow lenses

    Get PDF
Research has shown that the phenomenal brightness increase while viewing through yellow lenses does indeed exist, This study explores this occurrence through the use of the visual evoked response (VER) to objectively demonstrate the existence of the neurophysiological correlate to explain the perceived increase in brightness. The results showed minimal electrophysiological changes that would correlate with the subjective brightness reported by all the participants. It appears that a neurophysiological correlation of the brightness is not detectable with the VER as measured urider the conditions of this study
