    Moving towards a model of professional identity formation in midwifery through conversations and positioning theory

    The disciplines of nursing and midwifery both uphold a powerful oral tradition that can impact upon student learning. Students enrolled in a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery are supervised and assessed by midwives during their placements in midwifery practice settings by a program of \u27preceptorship\u27 support and where conversations are innate. Positioning theory, eveloped by Harre and others, is a metaphorical concept in which an individual \u27positions\u27 herself/himself within entities of encompassing people, institutions and societies where conversations are conducted either privately or publicly. As construction sites of professional learning, conversations are underpinned by reflective practices.In unravelling conversations, positioning may be applied as an analytical tool by educators to interpret the emerging meanings and themes in their discussions with students, reflective journals by students and in meetings with preceptors/midwives.<br /

    The Role of Identity in Disposal: Lessons from Mothers’ Disposal of Children’s Possessions

    This study uses depth interviews with mothers about their disposal of children’s possessions to craft a new understanding of the role of identity in disposal. Our study asks: How does identity influence the disposal process of ordinary possessions? A disposal identity continuum of keepers and discarders emerged from the data. This new understanding suggests that disposal involves decisions regarding the match of possession to mother, partner, child, and family identities. When disposal identities lead to conflict between the actors in the disposal decision, decision makers use coping strategies such as subterfuge, avoidance, forced choice, and training/discussion. In addition, the disposal process can lead to negative emotional outcomes such as ambivalence and guilt for both keepers and discarders

    New tool gauges impact of exchange rates on states

    States with relatively more employment tied to international trade are increasingly likely to be sensitive to exchange rate movements, and face sharply different effective exchange rate shifts, often provoked by economic or financial crises. ; Analysts need a tool to more effectively gauge the sometimes varied impact of exchange rate movements on states. In this article, we introduce a measure that compares the value of the dollar against the currencies of countries with which each of the 50 states trade--the real trade-weighted value of the dollar (RTWVD) index. ; To assess the impact of exchange rates on states, the RTWVD weights the U.S. dollar exchange rate with various countries based on a state's share of exports. It is a "real" measure because it adjusts the exchange rate for different rates of inflation.     Stellar Coronae, Solar Flares: a Detailed Comparison of sigma Gem, HR 1099, and the Sun in High-resolution X-rays

    Chandra HETG spectra of the coronally active binary stars sigma Gem and HR 1099 are among the highest fluence observations for such systems taken at high spectral resolution in x-rays with this instrument. We compare their properties to solar flare spectra obtained with the Russian CORONAS-F RESIK instrument at similar resolution in an overlapping bandpass. We emphasize the comparisons of the 3.3-6.1 A region from solar flare spectra to the corresponding sigma Gem and HR 1099 spectra. We also model the the HETG spectra from 1.7-25 A to determine coronal temperatures and elemental abundances. Sigma Gem is a single lined coronally active long period binary which has a very hot corona. HR 1099 is a similar, but shorter period, double lined system. In the deep exposures we study emission from some of the weaker species, such as K, Na, and Al, which have the lowest first ionization potentials (FIP). The solar flare temperatures reach ~20 MK, comparable to the sigma Gem and HR 1099 coronae. During the Chandra exposures, sigma Gem was slowly decaying from a flare and its spectrum is well characterized by a collisional ionization equilibrium plasma with a broad temperature distribution ranging from 2-60 MK, peaking near 25 MK, but with substantial emission from 50 MK plasma. We have detected K XVIII and Na XI emission which allow us to set limits on their abundances. HR 1099 was also in a flare state but had no detectable K XVIII. These measurements provide new comparisons of solar and stellar coronal abundances, especially at the lowest FIP values. The low FIP elements do not show enhancement in the stellar coronae as they do in the Sun, except for K in sigma Gem. Sigma Gem and HR 1099 differ in their emission measure distributions but have very similar elemental abundances.Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal, 19 pages, 10 figures, 9 table

    Exciton Footprint of Self-assembled AlGaAs Quantum Dots in Core-Shell Nanowires

    Quantum-dot-in-nanowire systems constitute building blocks for advanced photonics and sensing applications. The electronic symmetry of the emitters impacts their function capabilities. Here, we study the fine structure of gallium-rich quantum dots nested in the shell of GaAs-AlGaAs core-shell nanowires. We used optical spectroscopy to resolve the splitting resulting from the exchange terms and extract the main parameters of the emitters. Our results indicate that the quantum dots can host neutral as well as charges excitonic complexes and that the excitons exhibit a slightly elongated footprint, with the main axis tilted with respect to the growth axis. GaAs-AlGaAs emitters in a nanowire are particularly promising for overcoming the limitations set by strain in other systems, with the benefit of being integrated in a versatile photonic structure

    Increasing dominance of large lianas in Amazonian forests

    Ecological orthodoxy suggests that old-growth forests should be close to dynamic equilibrium, but this view has been challenged by recent findings that neotropical forests are accumulating carbon and biomass, possibly in response to the increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. However, it is unclear whether the recent increase in tree biomass has been accompanied by a shift in community composition. Such changes could reduce or enhance the carbon storage potential of old-growth forests in the long term. Here we show that non-fragmented Amazon forests are experiencing a concerted increase in the density, basal area and mean size of woody climbing plants (lianas). Over the last two decades of the twentieth century the dominance of large lianas relative to trees has increased by 1.7–4.6% a year. Lianas enhance tree mortality and suppress tree growth, so their rapid increase implies that the tropical terrestrial carbon sink may shut down sooner than current models suggest. Predictions of future tropical carbon fluxes will need to account for the changing composition and dynamics of supposedly undisturbed forests
