Mitigating Cotton Revenue Risk Through Irrigation, Insurance, and Hedging
This study focuses on managing cotton production and marketing risks using combinations of irrigation levels, put options (as price insurance), and crop insurance. Stochastic cotton yields and prices are used to simulate a whole-farm financial statement for a 1,000 acre furrow irrigated cotton farm in the Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley under 16 combinations of risk management strategies. Analyses for risk-averse decision makers indicate that multiple irrigations are preferred. The benefits to purchasing put options increase with yields, as they are more beneficial when higher yields are expected from applying more irrigation applications. The State Contingent Approach to Farmers' Valuation and Adoption of New Biotech Crops: Nitrogen-Fertilizer Saving and Drought Tolerance Traits
We used a state contingent approach to give a detailed analysis of the uncertainty surrounding seed trait adoption. Our framework emphasizes the role of timing and information in farmers’ adoption decisions. The inherent embeddedness of seed traits results in timing restrictions and the inability of post-planting adjustments, this in turn results in farmers necessarily engaging in a game with nature. Two main types of traits we identify are supplementing traits and stabilizing traits – classification into each category is directly related on the mobility of the production factor the trait intends to substitute. Supplementing traits allow for acting after nature (i.e., ex post) while stabilizing traits are better modeled as acting before nature (i.e., ex ante). Exact spinor-scalar bound states in a QFT with scalar interactions
We study two-particle systems in a model quantum field theory, in which
scalar particles and spinor particles interact via a mediating scalar field.
The Lagrangian of the model is reformulated by using covariant Green's
functions to solve for the mediating field in terms of the particle fields.
This results in a Hamiltonian in which the mediating-field propagator appears
directly in the interaction term. It is shown that exact two-particle
eigenstates of the Hamiltonian can be determined. The resulting relativistic
fermion-boson equation is shown to have Dirac and Klein-Gordon one-particle
limits. Analytic solutions for the bound state energy spectrum are obtained for

KOtBu : a privileged reagent for electron transfer reactions?
Many recent studies have used KOtBu in organic reactions that involve single electron transfer; in the literature, the electron transfer is proposed to occur either directly from the metal alkoxide or indirectly, following reaction of the alkoxide with a solvent or additive. These reaction classes include coupling reactions of halobenzenes and arenes, reductive cleavages of dithianes and SRN1 reactions. Direct electron transfer would imply that alkali metal alkoxides are willing partners in these electron transfer reactions, but the literature reports provide little or no experimental evidence for this. This paper examines each of these classes of reaction in turn, and contests the roles proposed for KOtBu; instead, it provides new mechanistic information that in each case supports the in situ formation of organic electron donors. We go on to show that direct electron transfer from KOtBu can however occur in appropriate cases, where the electron acceptor has a reduction potential near the oxidation potential of KOtBu, and the example that we use is CBr4. In this case, computational results support electrochemical data in backing a direct electron transfer reaction

Gating strategy for FLOW cytometry data in Fig. 7b . An average of 100,000 events were counted for each sample. To start, all samples were taken through the first three gates (top, labeled 1, 2, 3), which excluded artifacts that were not single-cells based on forward and side scatter. From there, DAPI stain was used to determine viability (gate 4). All DAPI negative cells were carried to gate 5, where cells were split into CD45 positive and CD45 negative populations. The CD45 positive population was then gated using F4/80 on the x axis and CD45 on the y axis (gate 6). Circles indicate CD45 + F4/80+ cells. Values for the graph in Fig. 7b were obtained by taking the total number of CD45+F4/80+ cells counted for each sample and dividing that value by the total number of viable cells counted in the sample (DAPI negative).
