    Anatomies of Melancholy

    The works presented in Anatomies of Melancholy explore the residual affects of pain and trauma through photography. By combining personal stories with documentary photography this body of work conveys a tension between the (in)visibility of pain and the need to speak*. Through the process of spending time with individuals and discussing their personal trauma while making photographs, I hope to acknowledge and even conserve the pain of others. Though the images do not include a narrative of the subjects\u27 pain, they are able to communicate and begin a visual discourse. The raw and emotive images become a platform for the viewer to empathize with the pain of others or understand their own pain. I am interested in a photograph\u27s power to console, articulate and offer a map of our experiences.     Temperature Dependence of Viscosity in Normal Fluid 3^3He Below 800mK Determined by a Micro-electro-mechanical Oscillator

    A micro-electro-mechanical system vibrating in its shear mode was used to study the viscosity of normal liquid 3^3He from 20mK to 770mK at 3bar, 21bar, and 29bar. The damping coefficient of the oscillator was determined by frequency sweeps through its resonance at each temperature. Using a slide film damping model, the viscosity of the fluid was obtained. Our viscosity values are compared with previous measurements and with calculated values from Fermi liquid theory. The crossover from the classical to the Fermi liquid regime is manifest in the temperature dependence of viscosity. In the Fermi liquid regime, the temperature dependence of viscosity changes from T1T^{-1} to T2T^{-2} on cooling, indicating a transition from the Stokes flow to the Couette flow regime.Comment: The following article has been submitted for publication to Physical Review

    Anomalous Damping of a Micro-electro-mechanical Oscillator in Superfluid 3^3He-B

    The mechanical resonance properties of a micro-electro-mechanical oscillator with a gap of 1.25 μ\mum was studied in superfluid 3^3He-B at various pressures. The oscillator was driven in the linear damping regime where the damping coefficient is independent of the oscillator velocity. The quality factor of the oscillator remains low (Q80Q\approx 80) down to 0.1 TcT_c, 4 orders of magnitude less than the intrinsic quality factor measured in vacuum at 4 K. In addition to the Boltzmann temperature dependent contribution to the damping, a damping proportional to temperature was found to dominate at low temperatures. We propose a multiple scattering mechanism of the surface Andreev bound states to be a possible cause for the anomalous damping.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Dominant Role of Nucleotide Substitution in the Diversification of Serotype 3 Pneumococci over Decades and during a Single Infection

    Streptococcus pneumoniae of serotype 3 possess a mucoid capsule and cause disease associated with high mortality rates relative to other pneumococci. Phylogenetic analysis of a complete reference genome and 81 draft sequences from clonal complex 180, the predominant serotype 3 clone in much of the world, found most sampled isolates belonged to a clade affected by few diversifying recombinations. However, other isolates indicate significant genetic variation has accumulated over the clonal complex’s entire history. Two closely related genomes, one from the blood and another from the cerebrospinal fluid, were obtained from a patient with meningitis. The pair differed in their behaviour in a mouse model of disease and in their susceptibility to antimicrobials, with at least some of these changes attributable to a mutation that upregulated the patAB efflux pump. This indicates clinically important phenotypic variation can accumulate rapidly through small alterations to the genotype

    Pseudomonas species have evolved dynamic and intricate regulatory networks to fine-tune gene expression, with complex regulation occurring at every stage in the processing of genetic information. This approach enables Pseudomonas to generate precise individual responses to the environment in order to improve their fitness and resource economy. The weak correlations we observe between RNA and protein abundance highlight the significant regulatory contribution of a series of intersecting post-transcriptional pathways, influencing mRNA stability, translational activity and ribosome function, to Pseudomonas environmental responses. This review examines our current understanding of three major post-transcriptional regulatory systems in Pseudomonas spp.; Gac/Rsm, Hfq and RimK, and presents an overview of new research frontiers, emerging genome-wide methodologies, and their potential for the study of global regulatory responses in Pseudomonas
