The impact of North-South and South-South trade agreements on bilateral trade.
Free trade agreements (FTAs) lead to a rise in bilateral trade even if the signatories include developing countries. Furthermore, the percentage increase in bilateral trade is higher for South-South agreements than for North-South agreements. the results are robust across a number of gravity model specifications in which we contrl for the endogenity of FTAs (with bilateral fixed effects) and also take account of multilateral resistance in both estimation (with country-fixed effects) and compartive statics (analytically). Our analystical model shows that multilateral resitance dampens the imapct of FTAs on trade by less in South-South agreements than in North-South agreements, which accentuates the difference implied by our gravity model coefficients, and that this difference gets larger as the number of signatories rises. For example, allowing for lags and multilateral resistance, a four-country North-South agreement rasies bilateral trade by 53% while the analogous South-South impact is 107%

Glucocorticoids exert direct toxicity on microvasculature: analysis of cell death mechanisms.
Glucocorticoids (GCs) are routinely administered systemically or injected into the eye when treating numerous ocular diseases; however, their toxicity on the retinal microvasculature has not been previously investigated. In this article, the effects of hydrocortisone (Hydro), dexamethasone, dexamethasone-phosphate and triamcinolone acetonide (TA) were evaluated in vitro on human skin microcirculation cells and, bovine endothelial retinal cells, ex-vivo, on flat mounted rat retinas. The degree of GCs induced endothelial cell death varied according to the endothelial cell type and GCs chemical properties. GCs toxicity was higher in skin microvascular endothelial cells and for hydrophobic GC formulations. The mechanism of cell death differed between GCs, Hydro and TA activated the leukocyte elastase inhibitor/L-DNase II pathways but did not activate caspases. The mechanisms of cell death observed in cell cultures were similar to those observed in rat retinal explants. Taken together these results indicate that particular attention should be paid to the potential vascular side effects when administrating GCs clinically and in particular when developing sustained-release intraocular devices
Resolution of foveal detachment in dome-shaped macula after treatment by spironolactone: report of two cases and mini-review of the literature.
Dome-shaped macula (DSM) was recently described in myopic patients as a convex protrusion of the macula within a posterior pole staphyloma. The pathogenesis of DSM and the development of associated serous foveal detachment (SFD) remain unclear. The obstruction of choroidal outflow and compressive changes of choroidal capillaries have been proposed as causative factors. In this paper, we report two cases of patients with chronic SFD associated with DSM treated with oral spironolactone. After treatment, there was a complete resolution of SFD in both patients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of successful treatment of SFD in DSM by a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist

Hard - X-rays selected Active Galactic Nuclei. I. A radio view at high-frequencies
A thorough study of radio emission in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is of
fundamental importance to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for
the emission and the interplay between accretion and ejection processes. High
frequency radio observations can target the nuclear contribution of smaller
emitting regions and are less affected by absorption. We present JVLA 22 and 45
GHz observations of 16 nearby (0.003z0.3) hard - X-rays selected AGN
at the (sub)-kpc scale with tens uJy beam sensitivity. We detected 15/16
sources, with flux densities ranging from hundreds uJy beam to tens Jy
(specific luminosities from 10 to 10 at
22 GHz). All detected sources host a compact core, with 8 being core-dominated
at either frequencies, the others exhibiting also extended structures. Spectral
indices range from steep to flat/inverted. We interpret this evidence as either
due to a core+jet system (6/15), a core accompanied by surrounding star
formation (1/15), to a jet oriented close to the line of sight (3/15), to
emission from a corona or the base of a jet (1/15), although there might be
degeneracies between different processes. Four sources require more data to
shed light on their nature. We conclude that, at these frequencies, extended,
optically-thin components are present together with the flat-spectrum core. The
relation is roughly followed, indicating a possible
contribution to radio emission from a hot corona. A weakly significant
correlation between radio core (22 and 45 GHz) and X-rays luminosities is
discussed in the light of an accretion-ejection framework.Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRA
On the use of an appropriate TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling assay to identify apoptotic cells.
Apoptosis is an essential cellular mechanism involved in many processes such as embryogenesis, metamorphosis, and tissue homeostasis. DNA fragmentation is one of the key markers of this form of cell death. DNA fragmentation is executed by endogenous endonucleases such as caspase-activated DNase (CAD) in caspase-dependent apoptosis. The TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling) technique is the most widely used method to identify apoptotic cells in a tissue or culture and to assess drug toxicity. It is based on the detection of 3'-OH termini that are labeled with dUTP by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase. Although the test is very reliable and sensitive in caspase-dependent apoptosis, it is completely useless when cell death is mediated by pathways involving DNA degradation that generates 3'-P ends as in the LEI/L-DNase II pathway. Here, we propose a modification in the TUNEL protocol consisting of a dephosphorylation step prior to the TUNEL labeling. This allows the detection of both types of DNA breaks induced during apoptosis caspase-dependent and independent pathways, avoiding underestimating the cell death induced by the treatment of interest
