Probing Light Sbottoms with B Decays
We discuss recently reported experimental hints for a bottom squark with mass
around 3.5 GeV decaying as sbottom -> charm + lepton + anti-sneutrino. We
correlate the sbottom lifetime with the decay rates for bottom -> sbottom +
neutrino + anti-sneutrino and bottom -> sbottom + anti-neutrino + sneutrino in
the framework of a minimal supersymmetric model extended by right-handed
(s)neutrinos. Confronting our results with the well-measured semileptonic
branching ratio of B mesons we conclude that the light sbottom interpretation
of the experimental anomalies is ruled out, unless m_bottom < m_sbottom +
m_sneutrino.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Letter from Mary to Mother and Father - Friday Evening circa November 1926
On two sheets of College of Wooster stationary in blue ink Mary writes to her Mother and Father about how she’s spending time with Fred, turned down a date with Bob and that her Thanksgiving was peaceful and quiet. She also admits to struggling with her mid semester grades. Receiving two D- and an incomplete.

Friday Evening
6:10 – after supper.
Dear Mother and Father,
It has been raining today. It is getting colder now and also blowing real hard outside. Had a pretty good supper tonight. Frederick waited table [sic] down stairs.
Thanksgiving yesterday was such a peaceful quiet day. There were only 3 of us in the house all day even Mrs. Rankin was gone – We made toast in our room here and then went to services at 9:30. Prexy spoke - and the choir sang. Then after services Fred came home with me and then we four drove down town in Leland’s car to send the telegram.
Had dinner at 1:00 and such a wonderful dinner as it was – five courses – all formal service – Rah! Rah! Rah!
Yesterday afternoon we sung and played for a while – then when Leland came – Mary & he went for a walk out in the country - and then I wrote my diary and sort of rested.
In the evening Bob had asked me for a date but I told him Fred and I wanted to be together for a while – as we hadn’t – much this year – so Bean did not have a date with Bob – Andy Anderson went with us to the show. The show was dear – and we had such a nice time. Leland and Mary had the whole house to themselves Hot Dog! Cute?
Have just bushels of studying to do this week-end. More fun! We have weekly tests in Spanish every Tuesday – and such tests. Am awfully discouraged with my Spanish. Our prof is simply hapless – she started out alright and my first test grade was 85 and my daily work was almost perfect but she kept piling up work until now I don’t where I am – hardly
in fact got D- on my mid-semester grade and of course those grades down [sic] go down on permanent record but nevertheless all my grades this mid-semester mean work harder than ever. Also got D- in Psychology. I’ve worked less in Psychology than in any other subject. It seems I’m less interested in it and I always leave it till the last to do – am doing a lot of outside reading for it now – turning over a new leaf as one would say.
Wasn’t feeling well the day we had our History exam so my grade is I in that (which means incomplete) I hope to get at least a B in that and will do my best for an A. Then got B+ in Debate which I hope will be A for mid semester grade. Miss Thayer (our Eng. Prof) didn’t give out grades so I don’t know my grade in that. But got B+ in my semester thesis – which was an excellent paper she said.
And deserved an A if I hadn’t been for the spelling – (???) – and I asked her if she had idea about what kind of work I was doing and she said of course she had nothing to judge by except [unclear] thesis [/unclear] and class work and that my classwork was very fine-
My laundry came this afternoon – and it looked so nice – the way the things were packed ect and oh the goodies are so good – Mary says so, too. Andy says so, too – We all say so.
Must go to the library tonight. In facet in a very few minutes – so must close now. Mary is having a date with an old [unclear] Wauwatosa [/unclear] friend tonight.
Three more weeks till Christmas.
Much Love
Your Maryhttps://openworks.wooster.edu/marybehner_papers/1076/thumbnail.jp
Letter from Mary to Family- Saturday Evening, 1927
Mary wrote this letter to her family during the summer of 1927 while she was staying in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Though someone else has added 1924 as a potential date for this letter, the content mentions dates that take place in 1927. The letter is written on Student Volunteer Movement: Northern Ohio Union stationery, which includes Mary\u27s name twice in the letterhead. The five sheets of paper are covered front and back and are handwritten with black ink. Mary writes about how she spends her time in Milwaukee, changing her major to sociology and doing a project on elderly care facilities, and how she wants to spend the rest of her summer once she leaves Milwaukee.

Saturday evening 7:30. a Summer in Milwaukee
Dearest Family,
Received a letter full of letters from Father this morning - - Among the letters was one addressed to H. Smith at Chatauqua [sic]. It was closed, and you said nothing about it in your letters so I thought either it was something you wanted me to see before you sent it out or your stenog. had forgotten to mail it - or rather I mean - had gotten it in the wrong envelope with my numerous letters - so to make sure I opened it - and I\u27ll send it off tomorrow - as I sealed it up again.
The Mrs. Brouwer, Mary and Ellis left for the North last Thursday. They suggested to me to stay out here as much as I wanted and have Elizabeth spend the night with me; and that is just what I\u27ve done up until tonight.
2
And you can imagine what a wonderful time we have had together. We cooked our own supper & breakfast both times, of course and we talked & talked. She is so appreciative. We had our devotions together too and my what beautiful times we had together. She needs such a companion - for I know she hasn\u27t had anyone treat her as I have. Every once in a while she says little things about what I\u27ve meant to her that make me feel so unworthy and small - and cheap - when I realize what she has had to buck up against. And then when she says such things I feel well repaid for all I\u27ve done for her. I should like very much to give her a Moffet\u27s testament for her graduation present.
Did you send her a gift with a nice letter? You all should write to her - It would mean much.
3
Dad and Mother won\u27t you both write - and send her something she can keep, together, if you feel you can at all?
It is trying to rain tonight- Just now I am all alone in the house. I am sort of a door keeper Have the keys etc. Water the flowers - feed fish - - etc, etc. It\u27s sort of a responsibility but I give - strict attention to be very careful of everything you may be sure.
Mrs. Leiske, the dear old lady next door - the Captain Leiske died this winter - had me over with her for supper this evening - and I am staying there all night tonight. Don\u27t worry I won\u27t stay here alone at nights.
Then I called up Mrs. Anderson - the wife of the state Y.M. secretary who died recently - for she and
-4.-
I are great friends. We only met a couple of weeks ago. We are going to church together tomorrow. Dr. Dekurst (10th & Harmon) preaches his last sermon here. Then I guess Mrs. Anderson and I are going to have dinner together. She is all alone too - the same as Mrs. Leiske is.
I am not having a real gay time in fact its a rather solomn - time for a vacation but I\u27m enjoying it - every bit. Of course my studying takes quite a bit of time as that comes first - And then I haven\u27t the money to treat people - myself.
My ear fore is up - and also lunches that I take down town when I do research work at the Public Library. Got a Lib card and so you can see I mean business -.
5.
Haven\u27t had a letter from Fred but he sent me his brief case from up North so I could use it for my books - going to school. It is so handy. I asked him to send it if he wasn\u27t using it. I suspect he is kept pretty busy alright.
Received a letter from Wooster today saying my scholarship was granted for next year. I am glad. Is that blank I sent you O.K. and how did you fix it up? You did not answer me yet - whether or not you put my July $50 in the bank. I would like to know as soon as possible.
I must tell you how I spent the day today - After getting Eliz. off to work I cleaned up the kitchen & made beds and then went out in the garden and picked loads of beautiful flowers to take down to Brouwers store. [Mr B. & Bud are in N.Y]
6
Mrs. B had told me to do that anytime I wanted to.
The rest of the day I spent in studying in a very practical and unusual way. Did I tell you that I changed my course from English to sociology? and how glad I am! Well - for Wed. we have to write a paper on some phase of Old Age . Pensions - institutions for [Old Age] - etc. so - yesterday I called up the over here in Wau and made an appointment to visit them and did so - yesterday afternoon. Now - wasn\u27t that bold? Well - to come to todays\u27 happenings - I went over to the Prot. House for the aged in Milw. ( had called up beforehand and found that Mrs. Harrington - the bed lady our Calvary S.S. class used to send Sunshine Boxes to was still there ). So I took her some flowers - And - you never saw anyone so delighted and happy. She said before I left this surely will be a red letter day for me --
7.
Right away she asked me to stay for lunch - and I too was delighted. Thru her - then I got in very personal touch with the institution. It was indeed very interesting to compare the two Homes. The one - so narrow the other so broad. And the results of such attitudes are certainly marked. I won\u27t go into detail - but will tell you about it some time. Our sociology is indeed an interesting study. Mrs. Harrington wants to be remembered to my mother & father and sister.
Geraldine [unclear] Prunslow [unclear] is married. Did you know it? Prof. Dodge is having in some swell apartments on Grand Av. He wants to see me. Ev Jausseu went to Wis. University last year. I talked with her over the phone but haven\u27t seen her yet.
I have a date tomorrow night to her Dr. Johnson preach -
8.
with a college student from Dubuque who is studying to be a minister - He is from Poland - has travelled to S.A. And is now doing mission work under the auspices of the national board - in the Polish district here. He has been in this society for 2 years & speaks wonderful Eng. He preached last Sun morning at the little Pres. Chapel in Wauwatosa. - Met him after the services. Mrs. B. asked him home to dinner and that is how it all started. Saw him Tuesday - & he met me down town at Marquette & then walked on down town with me. He is much interested to say the least. I am interested in his work & etc. but not him personally - for my sake - as I am afraid he is of me -
Summer school ends Aug 8. If I could drive to Chatauqua N.Y. with you - I should do it in one minute without further questioning -
9.
National Council meets in the vicinity of N.Y (?) from Sept 3 - to Sept 8.- that is - Sat. Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed Thurs - of the week before school begins. Then on Fri, Sat & Sun of that same week - that is Sept - 8, 9, 10, I am due at Chipewa lake as representative of the S.V. at the retreat for the religious organization officers - Now -
- I have from Aug 8th to Sept 2nd free - Perhaps I could rush from here to W. Va and we could [the 4 of us] go to N. York together. Then - if there was time between Chatauqua & my council meeting - I could stay in the state of N.Y. some way, either working at Chatauqua or with Andy up in Northfield - Well - we\u27ll see. Have you any ideas.
I have made no definite plans about up North. The Brouwers
10
want me to come up if its possible though. Thats! That.! - - -
Whew! It sure is raining out! Storming rather. Guess I\u27ll go over to Mrs. Leiskes pretty soon. This is a pretty long letter. Pretty scibbly too. Hope you can read it.
Lots \u27o love.
Bean.
Just talked to Marjie over the phone. Am going to stay with her all night tomorrow & Monday I don\u27t want Mr. Rabe to bring me way out to Wau - would feel safer in town - even tho he is O.K. there is T.N.T. Monday nite. So all will work out well.

Letter from Mary to Folks - February 27, 1927

February 27, 1927
Dear Folks:
College of Wooster experienced its first bit of excitement this year, and even – for many years – Holden is all upset. About 7: o’clock this morning Mary and I were awake - and all of a sudden we heard laughing and talking and yelling – over towards Holden – but it seemed nearer than Holden – in fact in our lawn – Then I said: “Do you suppose its [sic] a fire?” – but neither of us got up to see (it was so cold). Then we heard an engine “chug, chug” – and some one yell “Turn on the hose.” Then we did get up - and sure enough there was smoke -- streaming out of the windows at the end of the hall – and we could see the flames in two rooms. Then we woke up the whole house - - so we all could participate in the excitement. Then the girls began to stream out of Holden and Dean Vance and Mrs Mcglouflin appeared on the scene – and another fire engine pulled up. The flames caught another room – and smoke started stream out from the third floor. We thought the firemen never would quenchthe [sic] flames. It seemed an age – but after a while – about 7:45 it seemed to be under control - so all (the whole dorm for once in the Hist of the School I guess) went to breakfast – and after breakfast
=2=.
When we came out the flames were all quenched – of course everyone had to investigate the two rooms that really were damaged. - the one room on the corner, nearest to us is a wreck – and the pathetic part about it is that the two girls who live in that room are both at home this weekend.
But, anyway, that’s the bit of news in a nutshell – and it’s almost time for S. School.
Esthers [sic] boxes are off at last. We packed them Friday afternoon and tied them up Saturday morning and took them down to the express office. There are seven of them sent C.O.D. – Thank you so much for dollar you sent to Dottie – it will come in very handy – Ahem! It was some job. We had to pack everything over again. I hope it all comes through alright. The cedar chest is here with me at Rankins. The lamp is all repaired but – shall we send it home. It’s still at the shop waiting for Liz & Mary to pay the bill so it can be brought up.
=3=
Last night Andy and I took a sudden notion to go to the movie. Got a ride down town – saw one of Zane Greys stories. Then we walked up the hill – and enjoyed it so.
Gave the kids demerits night before last and they’ve been mad ever since – but then that’s a small matter.
Spent all of Saturday afternoon on my Northern Ohio Student Volunteer correspondence – wrote up my minutes, too.
Mrs Parmalie is giving a concert this coming Tuesday night- and this Friday or Saturday – our college play is to be given. Catherine Dreisback is coming up for the weekend – either on Thursday evening or Friday morning. She is quite excited about it. I s’pose [sic] we’ll have to have a [unclear] Saturday night – and some place cards on Sunday noon.
It’s real cold out this morning – Guess I’d better get dressed for S.S. now or else be late. I love Sundays – they are so quiet and restful, usually.
=4=
Sunday afternoon.
Mary received a special from her mother – Roy has been sick 5 weeks today – They got a nurse for him yesterday. The only reason they didn’t get one before is that Roy wouldn’t hear of it – But the doctor simply insisted on it yesterday – so a nurse they must have. His other lung is affected now.
My laundry will no bought be there before this letter is. Its [sic] snowing. Two silk shirts of mine are in one of Esthers [sic] boxes. I surely do hope everything comes through alright.
Perhaps I’ll add on this later. Oh! I must tell you something first. Ruth Avery surprised us by coming to visit today – so just before we went in church we decided to have a dinner party – [unclear] ahem [/unclear]! So we got some extra church cards at the door and during church I wrote a verse for everyone but myself (Mary wrote that) on the back of the church card. Enclosed find the one I wrote for Boots --- This is what she wrote for me
Here is a girl named Bean
Her sense of humor’s supreme
Hasn’t she made us all scream?
Bless her heart, watch her eyes beam.

Con’t.
Daddy, your last letter was such fun. It was so funny. It tickled me when you said you were asked to pray - “uninformed”. Has Esther a permanent position yet.
Three cheers for Mother for buying a new hat. Keep it up Mother – maybe some day you’ll have a new coat. We are using those blankets here – of Esthers. They come in mighty handy because we are having some pretty cold weather. You surely have had some weather.
Did I tell you daddy – how last Sunday – or I mean the Sunday before – we read the most of Rev. Luccocks book – “The Home God Meant” – and then when I got your S.S lesson – it was on the Home? - Interesting!
Prof Johnston gave a paper on Stanley Jones’ book - “The Christ of the Indian” [unclear] this morning in S.S. It was excellent.
You remember I sent Miss Anna Van Hook a Christmas card. Well, I got an answer from her the other day. Will send it to you after I answer it.
=6=
Have been receiving numerous letter from Bennie for the last week. I wrote her a letter some time after Christmas and her letters this past week have been a sort of diary effect. She sent me a blotter from the 1st Wise Nat. Bk. And also – an Italian dialect poem – by T.A. Daly.
Isn’t it nice Catherine is coming to visit?
The prayer this morning in church was at least 15 minutes long. A Rev. G.H. Beeman of class ’92 and towards the last he prayed “Do thou awake the sleeping ones – and restore the faunting ones” – and you should have heard the shifts in the audience.
Love,

Letter from Mary to Family - Sun Eve circa 1926
This letter from Mary to her family is written on five small sheet of cream Y.W. Tea House Stationary in blue ink on front and back. She talks about prayer group, debate, buying a purple hat to wear on spring vacation if she gets to travel to Milwaukee or Akron. She took her Victrola to the infirmary for a friend to listen to while not feeling well. She had a radio listening party at a friends off campus house and talks about making a costume to wear to a gypsy party and a boy asking for too many dates .

Sun. Eve.
Dearest Family
It is almost time to go down to the prayer group but I can begin this anyway. I believe I told you that we are reading “The Man Nobody Knows” and the girls like it immensely. We are reading “Christ the Executive” now. It makes a fine discussion book for a Sunday evening prayer book group.
This has been a very happy pleasant and busy week. Have stopped working on Saturday mornings now till after the debate which cuts down my work 5 more hours – but I have to do it to be fair to the task I’ve undertaken. Of course it means paying out more – till after the debate which is the middle of April. Has
2. Father sent my Feb. allowance yet. He hasn’t mentioned it and I need it.
This week end has been dollar day downtown – Can you imagine me in a purple hat. Well – I bought a lovely quality of purple hat for a dollar. It’s a smart little shape too – and everyone likes it. It will be fine to travel in Spring Vacation if I go anyplace and if I don’t go to Milwaukee – I’ll feel compelled to go to Akron – They’ll disown me if I don’t pay more attention to them – and I don’t blame them.
Your box came Sat. morning after and I was so glad to get the records & the candy & clothes.
3. The “vic” has been away all this week – over at – the infirmary – one of my little Freshman friends is over there. So when these records came I took them over - - - I haven’t any place to keep the records – and I wonder if it wouldn’t be a good idea for you to send me one of your record books – Then I could keep them together. You could send me a couple more records then – when you sent it. – I appreciated the one – underneath the mellow moon so much because I know how you folks like it. – I like the instrumental ones especially.
Was over to see the girl the early part of this afternoon – played the records and
4. read to her a while – and she appreciated it so much. Am sending my laundry home Mon. morning. The sandwich enclosed was delicious – even tho it was sort of hard – Miss Gould tasted it and liked it too.
As I said before this has been a very pleasant week. Kam Sing Sun does not live at Luccocks anymore but out in town – in a large home – a couple blocks from the campus – where she is working for her room and board. Well the family then went to Columbus for the week and when Kam Sing told Miss Roat – Miss Roat said she ought to have some
5. to stay with her and asked who she wanted. So I’ve been down there every night except Friday – when I was at Holden over night with Mildred Cabut – a debater & darling girl.
Well there is a radio at this home where Kam is staying so you can imagine what fun we had. Last night (Sat. nite) we had a wonderful [unclear] couast [/unclear] till 1:30 (?) from W.T.A.M. Cleveland. We also had Chicago & N.Y. daily. They have a lovely home – beautifully furnished with pretty lamps – a lovely big fireplace and a comfortable davenport.
6. I went to sleep listening to the radio on the davenport – They have a darling dog & I had so much fun with it
Friday night she insisted on having a little party. She wanted to ask the two chinese fellows in school & insisted on my asking someone – so I didn’t know who else to ask but Bob. We had radio & had some guessing stunts and then popped corn over the fire. It was really lots of fun. – But I went to Holden all night to stay with Mildred – as the man of the house had come home for the night.
7. The other nights we tried to study. Has my report come yet? I wish you would send it to me if it has. I haven’t got one myself. Bob took me to the B.B. game last night and wanted a date for church – but I very frankly told him no – because we were having enough dates all at once. – He is taking me to the gypsy party Thursday. I wish you had sent the bandana handkerchief. I have paper [unclear] for a costume. I cut out that cute picture on the red [unclear] orars [/unclear] poster
8. of the girl and boy on the sled & tacked it on the wall above my dresser. – and I saved the poster of Santa – I can use it next Christmas.
Friday afternoon Mrs Johnson – [unclear] our [\unclear] former Pres Johnson’s wife gave the lovliest [sic] Tea for the girls debate team at her home. She is Irish & a perfect dear. Mrs Leau – Mrs Prof Cummings – Mrs Althouse & Mrs Miller (our debate instructors wife) – were all there. It was fun! I feel so incapable of it all – It’s a lot of work but grand experience.
9. You asked about Kam. She is a chinese girl who has never seen china. She is fr Her home is in Hawaii & her mother & many sisters and brothers live there now. She came over from Hawaii with a missionaries [sic] family & went to Northfield seminary for prep school. – She is educating herself – to teach perhaps in Hawaii. Shes an interesting character - & is liked by everyone. She looked beautiful Fri nite - with a new dress on & - her hair parted in the middle with braided rolls on either side.
10. she isn’t going to be a missionary. She’s just here for education as far as I know. Do you suppose you could send me the woolen girdle. That would be dandy for my gypsy costume – I [unclear] hadn’t thought of it! – I s’pose you’d have to send it special so I’d get it.
I wish Dad was here so we could talk over the children going to school - ! It wouldn’t be a bad idea to apply for both of them – for Esther should apply now for a room in Hover [sic] – I can do it for Es. too if you wish – because if she comes next year – she could have a choice room in Hoover if I did.https://openworks.wooster.edu/marybehner_papers/1047/thumbnail.jp
Letter from Mary to Parents- n.d., circa 1926
Mary wrote this letter to her parents on an unspecified day. Since she used one sheet of Tea House stationery, it is likely that it was written in 1926. Handwritten in black ink, the text covers the front and back of the cream-colored stationery. In this note, Mary mentions that she may have failed two exams and that one of her professors was impressed with her course note book.

But here’s some wonderful news. Just came from my 5 minute oral exam and this is what Dr. Mateer said when I finished.
“I saw your wonderful note book “ “ Its something to be mighty proud of. That’s

a gift. It was not only the best in the classes this year but one of the very best I have ever seen. Your classwork does not measure up to lab work altho your exam was very good. Perhaps I’ll get a B in the course. Heres [sic] hoping.
I’m rather excited. That from Dr. Mateer!

Letter from Mary to Parents- circa 1926
This letter was written by Mary to her parents early in 1926, her sophomore year of college. Mary talks about a recent Student Volunteer meeting at Ashland College, singing with a group in the Wooster jail, and an upcoming debate about capital punishment.

Dear folks.
Am home now from Ashland S.V. retreat tired enough to go right to bed. The trip cost me 5.98. There were 8 from Wooster there about 25 or 30 altogether from all the Ohio Northern Colleges. Met some fine students and had some fine talks with some.
It was an educational retreat and surely was intensive alright. We discussed the purpose of missions - changes in modern missions - Have we a message? - Failures of Christianity. slow for S.V in advancement of Christianity Campus problems!
Margaritta Craig led this mornings discussion on Campus problems and did it remarkably well. We were
2/ so proud of her. Kam Sing was along. The other discussions were led by Mrs Kenard from Japan. She is fine - Do you know her?
Ashland College is certainly crude compared to Wooster. One week were thankful we are in good old Wooster. We’re all mighty proud of Wooster when we compare with other colleges- going away from home makes us appreciate it alright
We had a fine time. The discussions were so broadening - and certainly were intensive then when we got back to Wooster this afternoon Mr Cook wanted to know if we would to go and sing at the jail and we did. That was a wonderful experience & gave a fitting finish to the whole conference.
3. It was so impressive! There were 6 in jail - and buy of minor offenses they were all together in a place between their individual cells. There was one negro and we asked him to sing- He was rather timid at first but sang -so beautifully- it was so touching.
—and I am debating for Capital Punishment. We have a debate tomorrow afternoon and I’m not prepared.
Mary is not back & I don’t know whether she will be back next week or not. Here’s hoping.
Mother’s permission came Friday morning so there was no trouble about getting the Deans permission
4- I’m sitting on my bed and its pretty inviting - - I’m tired and am going to bed very soon.
A book - debate on Capital Punishment came from N.Y - 1.00 - did Dad send it. Darrow-Talley debate.
Maybe I’ll write this week sometime if I have time

You should have seen Fred last night at the YW. & Y.M joint reception. I was so proud of him. The gym as decorated to look like an old Colonial estate. The stage setting was the porch of the colonial home and of course the actors.

Fred went to Cleveland Friday night with another freshman fellow on a milk truck. He is taking products for Coach on the side lines. I suppose he’ll tell you all about it. We enjoyed your special so much. Dad and you should have seen how proud Esther was that it was sent to her – she says – Yes – dad scolds me the most and bet he misses me the most too. She appreciates your attention so much.
Made the best looking poster for C.E. this morning on sudden inspiration. It’s a tropical scene in greys and black. My paints are so handy. Bought a bunch of art paper also and am really enjoying my poster work. Did you get the check I sent you for the show cord paints? Leland and another girl led C.E. tonite. [sic] Mary leads next Sunday night. She also has charge of a [unclear] Geneva [/unclear] meeting at Y.W. this coming Wednesday.
I have some important tasks this weekend at the retreat – presenting finances and some other things. Am awfully busy must go down town tomorrow get some printing done and also my picture taken for the Junior Section of the index.
Last night (Sat night) the four of us had a double date. Went to see “The Son of the Sheik”. It was dumb. Then 5 of the Miller Manor bunch came up and stayed all night with us. Scud slept with me and all but three of us are gone this weekend so the rest had single cots to themselves.
College is wonderful this year! Busy every minute as usual. Been learning lots of things about life - I mean they are [unclear] looming [/unclear] up a little more distinctly then before.
Am so glad you are much better. Scuds folks have been ill, too, and she is quite worried. They have lomarin paisie – She wired home last night.
Must close
With loads of love
Your Daughter
“Mary Marie”
The reason Fred did not send his laundry. He would not do it – because he knew how you were rushed for time. He sent them to the Laundry – I sent my sheets to the Laundry but didn’t want to send my dainty things.https://openworks.wooster.edu/marybehner_papers/1055/thumbnail.jp
Letter from Mary to Family- March 21, 1926
This letter was written by Mary to her family during the spring of 1926. The letter is composed on 8 sheets of Tea House stationery. Both sides of each sheet are covered in script written in blue ink. The last page has some staining. Mary writes about an upcoming missionary play she has a role in, plans for a school break, learning about hearing that another girl would be working at the Tea House in her place, and Sunday School class. She also details an evening with a young man named Bob, where they went to see a movie and Y.W.C.A. missionary event.

Sun afternoon [3/25]
Dearest Family-
This is a gorgeous afternoon. Wish one of you were here and we could take a nice walk. Maybe I’ll call up some one soon and take a walk. I wish some one would call up me!
Wore my green - & lace dress - my white hat, and green hose this morning - and I had the most - grandest compliments. I’m going to wear my white hat and yellow dress in the play next Sunday. The play is just darling, we practised Saturday morning.
It would be darling for your C.E. to put on - perhaps for some vesper service. Art Romig a dandy fellow is in love with me. Horrah! More fun. Wish you all come see it. You ought to drive up for the weekend and surprise me. My vacation begins a week from Wed. Still am no certain what I am going to do. Mary Boots has said nothing about coming to Milwaukee, so I guess that was just a pleasant dream. But then pleasant dreams are wonderful. — . . I don’t want to stay here long because I’ll have to buy food and

altho I’d like to be here to study - I don’t want to pay out anything. And I ought to go to Akron (Must write to Luella & thank her for asking me there.) I haven’t been to Akron for over a year now and if I don’t go there for the whole vacation I can perhaps for the week end.
Spring coming on now so beautifully makes ones cares seem brighter and makes ones thoughts purer and unselfish. So - - - after all - why shouldn’t we be very happy.
It was quite a blow to me when I was informed that a senior was to be given the work at the Tea House next year. She’s a fine girl, very much more efficient than I am in this type of work. has had much experience, and needs the money badly. She has worked here ever since the Tea House has begun but didn’t understand that the girl who was here didn’t have to work the full 25 hours or she would have applied for the position last year. So altho I was stunned & dissapointed for the moment I can appreciate the situation and realize

it is perfectly fair. It doesn’t do to cry over spilt milk and altho I did let loose that night I’m not worried any more. Something will come up and it won’t do any good to worry about it anyway. It came (the news) in the midst of exams - when I was pretty tired so thats why I was so weak about it at the time. Oh well, variety is the spice of life anyhow! - and this year has been hard and wonderful in testing - me. I can look at it gratefully - only from that angle. - etc.
Everyone is out taking pictures or walking this afternoon.
Bob took me to the show last night and we went to the earlier show after which we went to the Y.W. international party. I busted my string of crystal beads on the way home and we had to hunt for them in the street - Fun!
We had the finest sermon by Luccock this morning (something new!)- It made me think of Bruce Bartons books-
“The Unknown disciple” &
“The Man nobody Knows”
4. By the way I wrote “Doc” [Brouwer] an answer to his letter the other day, and started out by saying, “Well I guess I’ve punished you long enough (or perhaps it hasn’t punished you!!!) etc. Ha! Ha! I can just see his eyes twinkle and him scratching his head when he reads it.
We had the finest S.S. class this morning. One of the professors wives read a paper on “the home” It was beautiful and I shall never forget one sentence she read near the end perhaps it was a quotation
“I push the blades of grass aside and lay my finger on the heart of God.”
- I am going to try to get that paper & copy it - to read to you when I come home. We must take more time together as a family this summer. We’ll always regret it terribly if we don’t.
My exams went off beautifully. No kidding. I think as a whole its the best I’ve ever done. I know for sure that I got B. in Greek - and I

think a B. in Bible - and am sure a B in History - or perhaps an A. I’m anxious to see just what they will be. Then Debate will be an A I suppose - and gym a B. - and Physiology - perhaps a C or maybe D.
Be sure and send me my white shirt! Or let me know about it because if you don’t send it I’ll have to see about borrowing one.
I think I’ll go for a walk now ———
Later
Went out for a walk alone and took with me a book “To My Friend” and learned a portion about selfishness that I love. The topic tonight happened to be on the “cost of friendliness” so I gave it in C.E. [Christian Endeavor] We had a dandy meeting. Bob brought me home from C.E. - but I wouldn’t have an evening date with him. ‘Cause I had a whole evening with him Saturday night.
We went to the early show down town last nite and saw “Lazy Bones” (First show I’ve seen since I left Clarksburg Christmas.) - Then we came up the hill and went to the - - - say I guess I told you about that - - - Ha! Ha!
6.
Well the Y.W. party was dandy. It was sort of a trip around the world. In 4 of the lit rooms they represinted 4 different countries - India, Japan, China and Africa. You should have seen the clever hints represented in Africa and the cute little Jap. room in Japan and the warehouse in India. Of course it was simple to get material etc for it because there are so many missionaries in Wooster. In Japan we drank tea and had to get our cookies by using chop sticks. Of course in each country
there were numerous natives - dressed up and most of them were the missionaries children - who spoke the language and everything. It was a grand success and very interesting.
We voted for C.E. officers tonight. I believe I told you that I was one of the two up for prayer meeting chairman. —And say - this afternoon one of the girls came to me and wanted to know if I would accept one of the two nominees for vice president of the ‘Women Voters League.” - Ha! Ha! It is a new organization on the hill (being organized last fall) and a very live one.

Received a special from Mary today. She is feeling a little better I guess. It’s hard to tell just how she does feel from the letters and she talks about herself so very seldom.
Am doing the Daily Dozen every morning - so I don’t feel the effects now as I did after the first morning that I took them. I enjoy the “vic” so much - always play it when I dress - and write letters - - but not when I study.
My laundry came - and the dates [unclear] in [/unclear] Mrs Gould says to be nice and tell you how much she enjoys them. She really does.
The girls glee club gave such a beautiful sacred concert this afternoon - Easter music. Our choir gives a beautiful Easter concert next Sunday afternoon. Say - the next week end is going to be a lovely one. Perhaps one of you will take the blessed notion of coming to Wooster and visiting your Bean. I wouldn’t object. That darling play comes off then too.
Miller hasn’t picked the alternates for debate yet. He’ll do so Monday.
8. Well, I want to write to Mary yet this evening and if I keep on at this rate I never will get to her letter.
Lovingly. Mary Elizabeth.
Didn’t have a date to the Mens Glee Club Concert Thurs. nite and I didn’t want to buy a ticket - and debated quite a while about it until I decided there were only 4 in our college life and that I’d better go (50¢) - so did - went with Jo Hoag (Y.W. Pres) and her room-mate.
I mustn’t for get to tell you how much I like the birthday undees and they all match so nicely. Now if I had bloomers to match - I’d be tempted to go without a dress. Ha Ha! (In that case it’s a good thing I haven’t got them - huh!)https://openworks.wooster.edu/marybehner_papers/1033/thumbnail.jp
