    The Downside Risk of Elevation

Being granted a title enhances the status of the awardee while its loss has an opposite effect. The present article examines whether the latter effect dominates the former in the sense that elevation is less status-enhancing than relegation is status-damaging. Thereto, we use the three consecutive rounds of the German Excellence Initiative (a publicly funded program to promote outstanding research at German universities) as a natural experiment. We provide evidence that the loss of the title as a so-called elite university had a negative effect on the number of first year students. In contrast, we find no evidence for a positive effect on the number of first year students when a university is granted the title

Does distance matter? Tuition Fees and Enrollment of First-Year Students at German Public Universities

We use the recent introduction of tuition fees at public universities in seven of the sixteen German states to identify the effects of tuition fees on university enrollment of first-year students at German public universities. Our study differs from previous research in two important ways. Firstly, we take into account the location of universities and include a spatial variable, which measures the distance between a fee-imposing university and the nearest fee-free alternative. Secondly, we use panel data that allows us to control for unobserved heterogeneity between universities. Our results suggest that enrollment at universities that impose a tuition fee and that are located close to fee-free universities experience a decrease in enrollment that is twice as large as the decrease at universities that are further away from fee-free universities. We also find gender differences in enrollment behavior. Enrollment numbers of female students at universities that are located far away from fee-free alternatives are significantly less affected by the introduction of tuition fees than are enrollment numbers of male students

Conceptual planning of micro-assembly for a better utilization of reconfigurable manufacturing systems

Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) can be used to produce micro-assembled products that are too complex for assembly on flat substrates like printed circuit boards. The greatest advantage of RMS is their capability to reuse machine parts for different products, which enhances the economical efficiency of quickly changing or highly individualized products. However, often, process engineers struggle to achieve the full potential of RMS due to product designs not being suited for their given system. Guaranteeing a better fit cannot be done by static guidelines because the higher degree of freedom would make them too complex. Therefore, a new method for generating dynamic guidelines is proposed. The method consists of a model, with which designers can create a simplified assembly sequence of their product idea, and another model, with which process engineers can describe the RMS and the procedures and operations that it can offer. By combining both, a list of possible machine configurations for an RMS can be generated as an automated response for a modeled assembly sequence. With the planning tool for micro-assembly, an implementation of this method as a modern web application is shown, which uses a real existent RMS for micro-assembly.Federal Ministry of Education and Research of German

Business case analysis of hybrid systems consisting of battery storage and power-to-heat on the German energy market

    Get PDF
Declining prices on frequency containment reserve (FCR) markets endanger the profitability of battery energy storage systems (BESS). BESS combined with power-to-heat units could improve the economics both by supplying higher power rates on FCR markets and by converting excessive power into heat. Two cases were investigated with a techno-economic model using primary operation and market data of 2018/2019. The system amortises after 12 years with a net present value of two million € operating on the FCR market. No improvement was realized by additional arbitrage trading. Taxes, levies and charges frameworks are crucial for the economic success of hybrid systems
