Plutarch on the Role of Eros in a Marriage

The article examines briefly Plutarch's representation of the erotic connection that exists, or might exist, between a husband and wife. It looks at one essay from the Moralia, the Amatorius, to uncover Plutarch’s philosophical view of the proper role of eros in a marriage. Then it surveys three examples from the Parallel Lives: Brutus and Porcia; Pericles and Aspasia (whom, I will argue, Plutarch treats as a married couple); and Pompey and his last two wives, Julia and Cornelia

Nepos' Biographical Method in the Lives of Foreign Generals

This article argues that the programmatic statements in Nepos’ preface to the Lives of Foreign Generals and in some of the Lives themselves help establish that his biographies emphasize the virtues of his subjects and not their res gestae. References to unlearned readers, often taken as an indication of the general igno- rance of Nepos’ audience, are actually a method for constructing an ideal reader who will be sensitive to cultural differences between Greeks and Romans and will understand the differences between biography and history

Розглянуто питання формування фінансових бульбашок на основі ірраціональної поведінки економічних агентів та теорії інформаційних каскадів. Наведено базову модель інформаційних каскадів, характеристику та етапи утворення фінансових бульбашок. Ключові слова: прийняття рішень, стадна поведінка, фінансові ринки, інформаційний каскад, фінансові бульбашки.Рассмотрены вопросы формирования финансовых пузырей на основе иррациональных подходов стадного поведения экономических агентов и теории информационных каскадов. Приведена базовая модель информационных каскадов, характеристика и этапы образования финансовых пузырей. Ключевые слова: принятие решений, стадное поведение, финансовые рынки, информационный каскад, финансовые пузыри.The paper deals with formation of bubbles on the basis of irrational approaches of herd behaviour of the economic agents and the theory of information cascades. A basic model of information cascades is presented, as well as characteristics and stages in formation of financial bubbles. Громадська діяльність польських жінок Північного Причорномор’я наприкінці ХІХ – початку ХХ ст.

Польська спільнота посідає важливе місце в історії Північного Причорномор’я. Сучасні історичні дослідження як вітчизняних, так і польських науковців показали вагомий внесок поляків в соціально-економічний розвиток та культурне життя регіону. Однак картина минулого досі залишається половинчастою, бо в ній відсутня така важлива постать як особистість жінки. Громадське життя, про яке є можливість дізнатись з архівних матеріалів чи періодичної преси, оминало жінок, як правило зосереджених в приватній, родинній сфері. Тому є потреба висвітити саме діяльність жінок в суспільному житті Причорномор’я. Факти участі жінок в громадській діяльності треба розглядати не як простий вияв активності, але й спробувати відповісти на питання, чим вони були продиктовані і які наслідки мали особисто для жінки і для жіноцтва в цілому

In this chapter, I discuss one particular virtue of women as it is narrated by Plutarch, that of moderation (sophrosyne), and how it manifests itself in a wife’s devotion to her husband. I focus on three characters who appear in Plutarch's works, Camma (in Dialogue on Love and Virtues of Women), Cornelia (in the Lives of Brutus and Cato Minor), and Cornelia, mother of the Gracchi (in Lives of the Gaius and Tiberius Gracchus)

Little Things Mean a Lot: Odysseus' Scar and Eurycleia's Memory

In this essay, I argue that in Odyssey 19, when Eurycleia recognizes Odysseus despite his disguise, she does so not simply because she sees the scar but because she has shared with Odysseus a meaningful experience in the past. The recollection of this experience plays a central role in the larger scheme of disguise and recognition that is fundamental to the second half of the Odyssey, serving especially to re-establish the master-servant relationship that is necessary for the recovery of Odysseus’ identity. This connection to the larger plot and to other recognition scenes, I argue, is critical to for reading the full meaning of the vivid but unspoken recollection shared between Odysseus and Eurycleia

This chapter compares Plutarch's Sertorius to other Late-Republican Lives (Lucullus, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar) to explore Sertorius' character, and especially to establish the context for his decision to withdraw from civil war and to attempt to live peacefully in Spain
