Ainu and Anishinaabe Stories of Survivance: Shigeru Kayano, Katsuichi Honda, and Gerald Vizenor

A cross-cultural approach to reading and writing about indigenous literature contributes to the ongoing survival of native cultures. Narratives of survivance not only make a claim for the active presence of indigenous peoples (in opposition to the stereotypical notion of “vanishing peoples”), but also function as an act of resistance to dominant cultural narratives

Commissioning of NASA's 3rd Generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS KLM)

In the summer of 2017, the third and final spacecraft of the 3rd generation of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) launched aboard an Atlas V rocket from Complex 41 on the Eastern Test Range. Finishing final testing and integration in the first quarter of 2018, the TDRS-M communication and navigation satellite completes a constellation that began service in the early 1980s. The 3rd generation of spacecraft, TDRS-K, L, and M, not only provided beneficial systems engineering lessons in handling anomalous Radio Frequency and Doppler interference as well as integrating new spacecraft into an aging ground support infrastructure, but also supplies NASA with a valuable test bed for new operational concepts and technologies useful in defining the future architecture of the NASA Space Network. This paper presents an overview of the TDRS-K, L, and M missions, including transfer orbit, Level 5 bus and payload testing, and finally NASA-led Level 6 testing, which includes active TDRS System (TDRSS) users. Highlights include relevant testing results, commissioning challenges, and lessons learned. The final discussion includes a brief overview of future NASA communication and navigation technologies and network architectures

The Nogahabara Sand Dunes consist of a 43-km2 area of active transverse and barchanoid dunes within a 3200-km2 area of vegetated dune and sand sheet deposits. The average dune height in the active portion of the dune field is 5.8 m, with a maximum dune height of 28 m. Dune spacing is variable with average crest-to-crest distances for select transects ranging from 66–132 m. Between 1952 and 2015, dunes migrated at an average rate of 0.52 m a−1. Dune movement was greatest between 1952 and 1978 (0.68 m a−1) and least between 1978 and 2015 (0.43 m a−1). Dunes migrated predominantly to the southeast; however, along the dune field margin, net migration was towards the edge of the dune field regardless of heading. Better constraining the processes controlling dune field dynamics at the Nogahabara dunes would provide information that can be used to model possible reactivation of more northerly dune fields and sand sheets in response to climate change, shifting fire regimes and permafrost thaw.Funding for this research was provided by the U.S. Geological Survey Land Change Science and Land Remote Sensing programs, the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service and the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Rational Health Care Reform: Reflections of a Practitioner

The article discusses the inefficiencies in U.S. health care provision that is not addressed by the health care bill signed into law in 2010. The presence of the insurance provider, in a doctor-patient relationship, contributes to health care inefficiency. It advises the regulation of insurance companies, catastrophic health care to be the government\u27s responsibility, and the inclusion of tort reform to bring down insurance costs
