Design and Synthesis of Oxazoline-Based Scaffolds for Hybrid Lewis Acid/Lewis Base Catalysis of Carbon–Carbon Bond Formation
A new class of hybrid Lewis acid/Lewis base catalysts has been designed and prepared with an initial objective of promoting stereoselective direct aldol reactions. Several scaffolds were synthesized that contain amine moieties capable of enamine catalysis, connected to heterocyclic metal-chelating sections composed of an oxazole–oxazoline or thiazole–oxazoline. Early screening results have identified oxazole–oxazoline-based systems capable of promoting a highly diastereo- and enantioselective direct aldol reaction of propionaldehyde with 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, when combined with Lewis acids such as zinc triflate
Helical states of nonlocally interacting molecules and their linear stability: geometric approach
The equations for strands of rigid charge configurations interacting
nonlocally are formulated on the special Euclidean group, SE(3), which
naturally generates helical conformations. Helical stationary shapes are found
by minimizing the energy for rigid charge configurations positioned along an
infinitely long molecule with charges that are off-axis. The classical energy
landscape for such a molecule is complex with a large number of energy minima,
even when limited to helical shapes. The question of linear stability and
selection of stationary shapes is studied using an SE(3) method that naturally
accounts for the helical geometry. We investigate the linear stability of a
general helical polymer that possesses torque-inducing non-local
self-interactions and find the exact dispersion relation for the stability of
the helical shapes with an arbitrary interaction potential. We explicitly
determine the linearization operators and compute the numerical stability for
the particular example of a linear polymer comprising a flexible rod with a
repeated configuration of two equal and opposite off-axis charges, thereby
showing that even in this simple case the non-local terms can induce
instability that leads to the rod assuming helical shapes.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figure
Gb/s visible light communications with colloidal quantum dot color converters
This paper reports the utilization of colloidal semiconductor
quantum dots as color converters for Gb/s visible light
communications. We briefly review the design and properties of
colloidal quantum dots and discuss them in the context of fast
color conversion of InGaN light sources, in particular in view of
the effects of self-absorption. This is followed by a description of
a CQD/polymer composite format of color converters. We show
samples of such color-converting composite emitting at green, yellow/orange
and red wavelengths, and combine these with a blueemitting
microsize LED to form hybrid sources for wireless visible
light communication links. In this way data rates up to 1 Gb/s over
distances of a few tens of centimeters have been demonstrated. Finally,
we broaden the discussion by considering the possibility for
wavelength division multiplexing as well as the use of alternative
colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals
CPT symmetry and antimatter gravity in general relativity
The gravitational behavior of antimatter is still unknown. While we may be
confident that antimatter is self-attractive, the interaction between matter
and antimatter might be either attractive or repulsive. We investigate this
issue on theoretical grounds. Starting from the CPT invariance of physical
laws, we transform matter into antimatter in the equations of both
electrodynamics and gravitation. In the former case, the result is the
well-known change of sign of the electric charge. In the latter, we find that
the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter is a mutual
repulsion, i.e. antigravity appears as a prediction of general relativity when
CPT is applied. This result supports cosmological models attempting to explain
the Universe accelerated expansion in terms of a matter-antimatter repulsive

Value in the territorial brand: The case of champagne
Purpose– The aim of this study is to consider how key actors in a territorial brand view the creation of value, and how it is balanced between the territorial and individual brands – using champagne as a means of exploring this.Design/methodology/approach– The project was exploratory and a qualitative process involving interviews with key actors in the region was adopted.Findings– Members of the champagne industry adopt a range of views about the nature of value, focusing on image, reputation and perceived quality, but varying between an individualist approach (which considers that value creation lies with the proprietary brands) and a more collectivist perspective, which considers it is predominantly the result of the territorial brand.Research limitations/implications– Research into the organisation of territorial brands is just beginning; while merely exploratory this research suggests that issues around value merit further consideration.Practical implications– Actors within a territorial brand need to clearly negotiate how they view value in order to maintain coherence and a common message. They may also need to pay more attention to issues around brand co-creation.Originality/value– No research in this precise field has previously been carried out and this study highlights variations in the perceptions of key actors within a territorial brand.</jats:sec
Localization, Coulomb interactions and electrical heating in single-wall carbon nanotubes/polymer composites
Low field and high field transport properties of carbon nanotubes/polymer
composites are investigated for different tube fractions. Above the percolation
threshold f_c=0.33%, transport is due to hopping of localized charge carriers
with a localization length xi=10-30 nm. Coulomb interactions associated with a
soft gap Delta_CG=2.5 meV are present at low temperature close to f_c. We argue
that it originates from the Coulomb charging energy effect which is partly
screened by adjacent bundles. The high field conductivity is described within
an electrical heating scheme. All the results suggest that using composites
close to the percolation threshold may be a way to access intrinsic properties
of the nanotubes by experiments at a macroscopic scale.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Travelers’ diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms among Boston-area international travelers
INTRODUCTION: Travelers' diarrhea (TD) and non-TD gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common among international travelers. In a study of short-term travelers from Switzerland to developing countries, the most common symptom experienced was severe diarrhea (8.5%) followed by vomiting or abdominal cramps (4%).1 GI illnesses were the most frequently reported diagnoses (34%) among ill-returned travelers to GeoSentinel clinics.2 Of those returning to U.S. GeoSentinel clinics, acute diarrhea (30%) was the most common diagnosis.3 In one cohort of U.S. travelers, 46% reported diarrhea.4 GI illnesses can last from 2 days to weeks or longer,5 disrupting plans during travel or after returning home. Eighty percent of those who experienced diarrhea during travel treated themselves with medication and 6% sought medical care.
METHODS: The Boston Area Travel Medicine Network (BATMN) is a research collaboration of travel clinics in the greater Boston area representing urban-, suburban-, academic-, and university-affiliated facilities. A convenience sample of travelers ≥ 18 years of age attending three BATMN clinics between 2009 and 2011 for pre-travel consultations completed pre-travel surveys, at least one survey weekly during travel, and a post-travel survey 2–4 weeks after return. Travelers were asked to complete a survey at the end of each week of their trip. Institutional review board approvals were obtained at all sites and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and participants provided written informed consent. Information collected included demographic and trip characteristics, vaccines and medications recommended/prescribed before travel, medications taken during travel, dietary practices during travel (consumption of tap water, ice in drinks, unpasteurized dairy products, and salads), symptoms experienced, and impact of illness during and after travel. Vaccinations, prescriptions, and travel health advice given during the pre-travel consultation were recorded by a clinician, and the remainder of the surveys were completed by the traveler. Data were entered into a password-protected database (CS Pro, U.S. Census Bureau, Washington, DC).
RESULTS: We enrolled 987 travelers; 628 (64%) completed all three parts (pre-, during, and post-travel) and were included in the study. Comparison of the 628 to the 359 who did not complete all three parts (noncompleters) revealed no differences, except that completion rates were higher for white travelers than all other racial/ethnic groups (P < 0.001) and for older travelers (median age 47 years versus 32 years in noncompleters, P < 0.001).11 Of those 628 travelers, 208 (33%) experienced TD, 45 (7%) experienced non-TD GI symptoms, 147 (23%) experienced non-GI symptoms, and 228 (36%) did not experience any symptoms during or after travel. Of the 208 with TD, 140 (67%) reported diarrhea as their only symptom, whereas 33 (16%) also experienced nausea/vomiting, 23 (11%) abdominal pain, and 27 (13%) fever (Table 1). Of the 45 who reported non-TD GI symptoms, 21 (47%) experienced nausea/vomiting, 19 (42%) experienced constipation, and 10 (22%) experienced abdominal pain during or after travel (Table 2). Almost all travelers (99%) received advice about food and water precautions and diarrhea management during pre-travel consultation

Geometrical Frustration and Static Correlations in Hard-Sphere Glass Formers
We analytically and numerically characterize the structure of hard-sphere
fluids in order to review various geometrical frustration scenarios of the
glass transition. We find generalized polytetrahedral order to be correlated
with increasing fluid packing fraction, but to become increasingly irrelevant
with increasing dimension. We also find the growth in structural correlations
