Memory for public events in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease : the importance of rehearsal
Ribot’s law refers to the better preservation of remote memories compared with recent ones that presumably characterizes retrograde amnesia. Even if Ribot-type temporal gradient has been extensively studied in retrograde amnesia, particularly in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), this pattern has not been consistently found. One explanation for these results may be that rehearsal frequency rather than remoteness accounts for the better preservation of these memories. Thus, the aim of present study was to address this question by studying retrograde semantic memory in subjects with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) (n = 20), mild AD (n = 20) and in healthy older controls (HC; n = 19). In order to evaluate the impact of repetition as well as the impact of remoteness, we used a test assessing memory for enduring and transient public events that occurred in the recent and remote past. Results show no clear temporal gradient across time periods (1960–1975; 1976–1990; 1991–2005; 2006–2011), but a better performance was observed in all three groups for enduring compared with transient events. Moreover, although deficits were globally found in both patients groups compared with HC, more specific analyses revealed that aMCI patients were only impaired on transient events while AD patients were impaired on both transient and enduring events. Exploratory analyses also revealed a tendency suggesting preservation of remote transient events in aMCI. These findings are discussed with regards to memory consolidation models
Diagnóstico de las nuevas tecnologías empleadas para el diseño de mezclas asfálticas densas en caliente MDC-2
El presente trabajo pretende brindar alternativas de modificación de las Mezclas Asfálticas Densas en Caliente, empleadas para la pavimentación de las vías en Colombia, mecanismos que actualmente generan un impacto ambiental negativo debido a la utilización de los materiales pétreos, los cuales debido a su ubicación no cumplen con las especificaciones técnicas o son de difícil acceso en algunas zonas de nuestro país. Es por ello que estudios realizados han demostrado que la fabricación de mezclas con asfalto convencional no han sido suficientes para soportar la acción del tránsito y el clima, por lo tanto se ha recomendado emplear modificadores o aditivos en las mezclas, con el fin de mejorar las características o propiedades geológicas tanto del cemento asfáltico como de las mezclas asfálticas, así como emplear desechos de materiales que generan un alto impacto en el ambiente
The impact of time and repeated exposure on famous person knowledge in amnestic Mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease
Objective: Famous people knowledge has been shown to be impaired early in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, the question of whether recently acquired knowledge is more impaired than remotely acquired knowledge remains a matter of debate. The aim of this study was to investigate the patterns of semantic memory impairment in aMCI and AD by investigating two factors that may influence the retrieval of such knowledge, namely remoteness and frequency of repetition of information over time. Method: Three groups (19 controls, 20 aMCI and 20 AD patients) were compared on a test assessing general and specific biographical knowledge about famous people, where the period of acquired fame (remote vs recent) and the type of fame (enduring vs transient) were controlled for. Results: Global performance of aMCI and AD patients was significantly poorer than that of controls. However, different patterns of recall were observed as a function of time and type of fame. A temporal gradient was found in both patient groups for enduring names but not for transient ones, whereby knowledge about remote enduring famous persons was better recalled. Patients were more impaired at questions assessing specific biographical knowledge (unique to an individual) than more general knowledge. Conclusions: Tests of famous people knowledge offer a unique opportunity to investigate semantic deficits in aMCI and AD, because they make it possible to estimate the time at which memories were acquired, as well as the type of fame. Results are discussed in light of memory consolidation models.

DoctoralLe réseau thématique MAPS «Modélisation multi-Agent appliquée aux Phénomènes Spatialisés » propose depuis 2009 des évènements scientifiques ayant pour but de diffuser les pratiques de modélisations multi-agents au sein des Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société (SHS). Ce collectif pluridisciplinaire de chercheurs, d’enseignants-chercheurs et de doctorants est labellisé en tant que ≪ réseau thématique » par le Réseau National des Systèmes Complexes (GIS RNSC) et bénéficie du soutien du CNRS au titre de la Formation Permanente. Depuis 2009, plusieurs modèles ont été développés au cours d'événements MAPS. Ces modèles ont fait l'objet de fiches pédagogiques détaillées destinées aux communautés éducatives et universitaires et en particulier aux enseignants qui souhaiteraient faire découvrir la modélisation à leurs étudiants, mais aussi à ceux qui envisagent d’approfondir certains aspects avec un public plus averti. Elles sont également destinées à tous les curieux qui souhaiteraient découvrir ce que la modélisation apporte aux SHS, du point de vue heuristique et du point de vue opérationnel. Enfin, elles sont aussi des supports pour toutes les personnes qui souhaiteraient diffuser les réflexions scientifiques sur la modélisation et la simulation qui ont présidé à la rédaction de ces fiches
Biological activities of phthalocyanines-X. Syntheses and analyses of sulfonated phthalocyanines
Synthetic methods to obtain selectively sulfonated metallo phthalocyanines are compared.
Both condensation and direct sulfonation procedures lead to mixtures of mono- to tetrasulfonated
products which are resolved by reverse phase liquid chromatography in buffered aqueous-methanol.
The proportion of sulfonated derivatives is examined as a function of the starting reagents in the case
of the condensation method. and as a function of the temperature and reaction time in the case of
the direct sulfonation procedure. The number of sulfonate groups per phthalocyanine molecule is
determined by oxidative degradation of the phthalocyanine ring followed by quantitative chromatographic
analysis of the sulfophthalamide and phthalamide fragments
Lattice-Based Group Signatures with Logarithmic Signature Size
Group signatures are cryptographic primitives where users can
anonymously sign messages in the name of a population they belong
to. Gordon et al. (Asiacrypt 2010) suggested the first realization of group signatures based on lattice assumptions in the random oracle model. A significant drawback of their scheme is its linear signature size in the cardinality of the group. A recent extension proposed by Camenisch et al. (SCN 2012) suffers from the same overhead. In this paper, we describe the first lattice-based group signature schemes where the signature and public key sizes are essentially logarithmic in (for any fixed security level). Our basic construction only satisfies a relaxed definition of anonymity (just like the Gordon et al. system) but readily extends into a fully anonymous group signature (i.e., that resists adversaries equipped with a signature opening
oracle). We prove the security of our schemes in the random oracle
model under the SIS and LWE assumptions
An examination of semantic impairment in amnestic MCI and AD : What can we learn from verbal fluency?
Introduction
The Verbal Fluency Test (VF) is commonly used in neuropsychology. Some studies have demonstrated a marked impairment of semantic VF compared to phonemic VF in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Since amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) is associated with increased risk of conversion to incident AD, it is relevant to examine whether a similar impairment is observed in this population. The objective of the present empirical study is to compare VF performance of aMCI patients to those of AD and elderly controls matched one-to-one for age and education.
Method
Ninety-six participants divided into three equal groups (N = 32: AD, aMCI and Controls) were included in this study. Participants in each group were, on average, 76 years of age and had 13 years of education. A repeated measures ANOVA with the Group (AD, aMCI, NC) as between-subject factor and the Fluency condition (“P” and “animals”) as within-subject factor was performed. T-tests and simple ANOVAs were also conducted to examine the interaction.
Results
There was a significant interaction between the groups and the verbal fluency condition. In AD, significantly fewer words were produced in both conditions. In contrast, participants with aMCI demonstrated a pattern similar to controls in the phonemic condition, but generated significantly fewer words in the semantic condition.
Conclusion
These results indicate a semantic memory impairment in aMCI revealed by a simple, commonly-used neuropsychological test. Future studies are needed to investigate if semantic fluency deficits can help predict future conversion to AD
L’évaluation de la mémoire rétrograde dans la population québécoise âgée: Le PUB-40 et le PUB-12
L’évaluation de la mémoire représente une partie importante du travail des neuropsychologues
cliniciens œuvrant en gériatrie. En effet, au Canada, environ le tiers des aînés rapporte une
plainte mnésique dont les causes sont variées. Selon l’étiologie, différentes composantes du
système mnésique peuvent être atteintes, toutefois, l’évaluation de la mémoire rétrograde non
autobiographique (publique ou sémantique) n’est souvent effectuée que de manière superficielle,
puisqu’aucun outil d’évaluation fiable, valide et standardisé n’est disponible pour la population
québécoise vieillissante. Les objectifs de cette recherche étaient donc (1) d’élaborer un protocole
d’évaluation de la mémoire rétrograde non autobiographique spécifiquement adapté à cette
population, le PUB-40, (2) de recueillir des données de référence auprès de 105 participants
âgés sains et (3) de développer une version abrégée à partir des items permettant de discriminer
un groupe de 20 patients atteints de troubles cognitifs légers de type amnésique (TCLa) des
participants âgés sains
Planck 2013 results. XXII. Constraints on inflation
We analyse the implications of the Planck data for cosmic inflation. The Planck nominal mission temperature anisotropy measurements, combined with the WMAP large-angle polarization, constrain the scalar spectral index to be ns = 0:9603 _ 0:0073, ruling out exact scale invariance at over 5_: Planck establishes an upper bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r < 0:11 (95% CL). The Planck data thus shrink the space of allowed standard inflationary models, preferring potentials with V00 < 0. Exponential potential models, the simplest hybrid inflationary models, and monomial potential models of degree n _ 2 do not provide a good fit to the data. Planck does not find statistically significant running of the scalar spectral index, obtaining dns=dln k = 0:0134 _ 0:0090. We verify these conclusions through a numerical analysis, which makes no slowroll approximation, and carry out a Bayesian parameter estimation and model-selection analysis for a number of inflationary models including monomial, natural, and hilltop potentials. For each model, we present the Planck constraints on the parameters of the potential and explore several possibilities for the post-inflationary entropy generation epoch, thus obtaining nontrivial data-driven constraints. We also present a direct reconstruction of the observable range of the inflaton potential. Unless a quartic term is allowed in the potential, we find results consistent with second-order slow-roll predictions. We also investigate whether the primordial power spectrum contains any features. We find that models with a parameterized oscillatory feature improve the fit by __2 e_ _ 10; however, Bayesian evidence does not prefer these models. We constrain several single-field inflation models with generalized Lagrangians by combining power spectrum data with Planck bounds on fNL. Planck constrains with unprecedented accuracy the amplitude and possible correlation (with the adiabatic mode) of non-decaying isocurvature fluctuations. The fractional primordial contributions of cold dark matter (CDM) isocurvature modes of the types expected in the curvaton and axion scenarios have upper bounds of 0.25% and 3.9% (95% CL), respectively. In models with arbitrarily correlated CDM or neutrino isocurvature modes, an anticorrelated isocurvature component can improve the _2 e_ by approximately 4 as a result of slightly lowering the theoretical prediction for the ` <_ 40 multipoles relative to the higher multipoles. Nonetheless, the data are consistent with adiabatic initial conditions
