    Paleobotanical Analysis of Arai-Bazarjugh: A Late Medieval Armenian Caravanserai

    This project analyzes the paleobotanical remains from the medieval Armenian site, Arai-Bazarjugh, in order to create a detailed botanical description of the environment and the human activities of the caravanserai represented in the plant remains. Arai-Bazarjugh was a medieval Armenian caravanserai, or traveler’s inn commonly used as a safe place for traders to stay, occupied from the thirteenth century and eventually abandoned in the mid – fifteenth century. The paleobotanical samples were sorted and identified to family or genus. After identification, each category was counted and recorded to compare these results across all samples to track the occurrence of different families of plants across the entire site. Wheat and barley were the most frequently encountered cultivated taxa. Millet was also identified in a high number of samples, indicating seasonality in agriculture. Other agricultural seeds were found in small quantities, including legumes, fig, date, pomegranate, almond, olive, grape and cotton. The wild and weedy taxa identified was very diverse, but Rumex sp. and the Cyperaceae family occurred in the greatest number of samples. Other weedy and wild types indicate a diverse landscape with rivers and river beds, open pasture lands, and woodlands. Nearby the Arai-Bazarjugh caravanserai, a medieval village was excavated and future analysis of the archaeobotanical remains will allow for comparison between the two sites to further determine the location of processing, what crops and other botanical goods were being trade, which taxa were being kept for local use, and how this changed over time. There is little archaeological research analyzing the botanical remains from Armenia during the Medieval Age, especially when studying the caravanserai.     Future large hydropower dams impact global freshwater megafauna

    Dam construction comes with severe social, economic and ecological impacts. From an ecological point of view, habitat types are altered and biodiversity is lost. Thus, to identify areas that deserve major attention for conservation, existing and planned locations for (hydropower) dams were overlapped, at global extent, with the contemporary distribution of freshwater megafauna species with consideration of their respective threat status. Hydropower development will disproportionately impact areas of high freshwater megafauna richness in South America, South and East Asia, and the Balkan region. Sub-catchments with a high share of threatened species are considered to be most vulnerable; these are located in Central America, Southeast Asia and in the regions of the Black and Caspian Sea. Based on this approach, planned dam locations are classified according to their potential impact on freshwater megafauna species at different spatial scales, attention to potential conflicts between climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation are highlighted, and priorities for freshwater management are recommended

    11 x 11 Domineering is Solved: The first player wins

    We have developed a program called MUDoS (Maastricht University Domineering Solver) that solves Domineering positions in a very efficient way. This enables the solution of known positions so far (up to the 10 x 10 board) much quicker (measured in number of investigated nodes). More importantly, it enables the solution of the 11 x 11 Domineering board, a board up till now far out of reach of previous Domineering solvers. The solution needed the investigation of 259,689,994,008 nodes, using almost half a year of computation time on a single simple desktop computer. The results show that under optimal play the first player wins the 11 x 11 Domineering game, irrespective if Vertical or Horizontal starts the game. In addition, several other boards hitherto unsolved were solved. Using the convention that Vertical starts, the 8 x 15, 11 x 9, 12 x 8, 12 x 15, 14 x 8, and 17 x 6 boards are all won by Vertical, whereas the 6 x 17, 8 x 12, 9 x 11, and 11 x 10 boards are all won by Horizontal

    The firefighter problem is a monotone dynamic process in graphs that can be viewed as modeling the use of a limited supply of vaccinations to stop the spread of an epidemic. In more detail, a fire spreads through a graph, from burning vertices to their unprotected neighbors. In every round, a small amount of unburnt vertices can be protected by firefighters. How many firefighters per turn, on average, are needed to stop the fire from advancing? We prove tight lower and upper bounds on the amount of firefighters needed to control a fire in the Cartesian planar grid and in the strong planar grid, resolving two conjectures of Ng and Raff.Comment: 8 page

    Dynamical order, disorder and propagating defects in homogeneous system of relaxation oscillators

    Reaction-diffusion (RD) mechanisms in chemical and biological systems can yield a variety of patterns that may be functionally important. We show that diffusive coupling through the inactivating component in a generic model of coupled relaxation oscillators give rise to a wide range of spatio-temporal phenomena. Apart from analytically explaining the genesis of anti-phase synchronization and spatially patterned oscillatory death regimes in the model system, we report the existence of a chimera state, characterized by spatial co-occurrence of patches with distinct dynamics. We also observe propagating phase defects in both one- and two-dimensional media resembling persistent structures in cellular automata, whose interactions may be used for computation in RD systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Electromagnetic superconductivity of vacuum induced by strong magnetic field: numerical evidence in lattice gauge theory

    Using numerical simulations of quenched SU(2) gauge theory we demonstrate that an external magnetic field leads to spontaneous generation of quark condensates with quantum numbers of electrically charged rho mesons if the strength of the magnetic field exceeds the critical value eBc = 0.927(77) GeV^2 or Bc =(1.56 \pm 0.13) 10^{16} Tesla.     We present a new extension of Conway's game of life for two players, which we call p2life. P2life allows one of two types of token, black or white, to inhabit a cell, and adds competitive elements into the birth and survival rules of the original game.     FORM version 4.0

    We present version 4.0 of the symbolic manipulation system FORM. The most important new features are manipulation of rational polynomials and the factorization of expressions. Many other new functions and commands are also added; some of them are very general, while others are designed for building specific high level packages, such as one for Groebner bases. New is also the checkpoint facility, that allows for periodic backups during long calculations.
