    Chiral Four-Dimensional Heterotic Covariant Lattices

    Get PDF
In the covariant lattice formalism, chiral four-dimensional heterotic string vacua are obtained from certain even self-dual lattices which completely decompose into a left-mover and a right-mover lattice. The main purpose of this work is to classify all right-mover lattices that can appear in such a chiral model, and to study the corresponding left-mover lattices using the theory of lattice genera. In particular, the Smith-Minkowski-Siegel mass formula is employed to calculate a lower bound on the number of left-mover lattices. Also, the known relationship between asymmetric orbifolds and covariant lattices is considered in the context of our classification.Comment: 32 page

Three-generation Asymmetric Orbifold Models from Heterotic String Theory

    Get PDF
Using Z3 asymmetric orbifolds in heterotic string theory, we construct N=1 SUSY three-generation models with the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y and the left-right symmetric group SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}. One of the models possesses a gauge flavor symmetry for the Z3 twisted matter.Comment: 24 page

Gauge extension of non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetry

    Get PDF
We investigate a gauge theory realization of non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries and apply the gauge enhancement mechanism in heterotic orbifold models to field-theoretical model building. Several phenomenologically interesting non-Abelian discrete symmetries are realized effectively from a U(1)U(1) gauge theory with a permutation symmetry. We also construct a concrete model for the lepton sector based on a U(1)2S3U(1)^2 \rtimes S_3 symmetry.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur

Literature Overview - Privacy in Online Social Networks

    Get PDF
In recent years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become an important\ud part of daily life for many. Users build explicit networks to represent their\ud social relationships, either existing or new. Users also often upload and share a plethora of information related to their personal lives. The potential privacy risks of such behavior are often underestimated or ignored. For example, users often disclose personal information to a larger audience than intended. Users may even post information about others without their consent. A lack of experience and awareness in users, as well as proper tools and design of the OSNs, perpetuate the situation. This paper aims to provide insight into such privacy issues and looks at OSNs, their associated privacy risks, and existing research into solutions. The final goal is to help identify the research directions for the Kindred Spirits project

Evidence for convergent nucleotide evolution and high allelic turnover rates at the complementary sex determiner (csd) gene of western and Asian honey bees

Our understanding of the impact of recombination, mutation, genetic drift and selection on the evolution of a single gene is still limited. Here we investigate the impact of all of these evolutionary forces at the complementary sex determiner (csd) gene which evolves under a balancing mode of selection. Females are heterozygous at the csd gene and males are hemizygous; diploid males are lethal and occur when csd is homozygous. Rare alleles thus have a selective advantage, are seldom lost by the effect of genetic drift and are maintained over extended periods of time when compared to neutral polymorphisms. Here, we report on the analysis of 17, 19 and 15 csd alleles of Apis cerana, Apis dorsata and Apis mellifera honey bees respectively. We observed great heterogeneity of synonymous (pi S) and nonsynonymous (pi N) polymorphisms across the gene, with a consistent peak in exon 6 and 7. We propose that exons 6 and 7 encode the potential specifying domain (csd-PSD) which has accumulated elevated nucleotide polymorphisms over time by balancing selection. We observed no direct evidence that balancing selection favors the accumulation of nonsynonymous changes at csd-PSD (pi N/pi S ratios are all < 1, ranging from 0.6 to 0.95). We observed an excess of shared nonsynonymous changes, which suggests that strong evolutionary constraints are operating at csd-PSD resulting in the independent accumulation of the same nonsynonymous changes in different alleles across species (convergent evolution). Analysis of a csd-PSD genealogy revealed relatively short average coalescence times (~6 million years), low average synonymous nucleotide diversity (pi S < 0.09) and a lack of trans-specific alleles which substantially contrasts with previously analyzed loci under strong balancing selection. We excluded the possibility of a burst of diversification after population bottlenecking and intragenic recombination as explanatory factors, leaving high turn-over rates as the explanation for this observation. By comparing observed allele richness and average coalescence times with a simplified model of csd-coalescence, we found that small long term population sizes (i.e. Ne <104), but not high mutation rates, can explain short maintenance times, implicating a strong impact of genetic drift on the molecular evolution of highly social honey bees

The retarding Bessel Box an electron spectrometer designed for pump probe experiments

    Get PDF
A new type of electrostatic electron spectrometer is developed, capable of particular sensitive measurements of energy spectra and time of flight distributions. This instrument is specifically designed and optimized for laser pump X ray probe measurements, where photo electrons or Auger electrons from surfaces, clusters, molecular or atomic targets are being measured with high time resolution at an extremely low detection noise level. The compact and robust cylinder symmetrical system is a strongly improved Bessel Box design, featuring electron retardation, a large detection solid angle, about 100 electron transmission gridless design and excellent time resolution. In this paper we describe the principle of operation of this type of spectrometer and various tests. We present quantitative results for electron measurements with different solid state targets and two different electron detection systems in comparison to electron trajectory simulations inside the electrostatic spectrometer fields. Picosecond pump probe operation has been tested with high laser power and even the ability to work under femtosecond pump probe conditions with electron detection at the BESSY II slicing facility has been prove

    Privacy enhanced recommender system

    Get PDF
Recommender systems are widely used in online applications since they enable personalized service to the users. The underlying collaborative filtering techniques work on user’s data which are mostly privacy sensitive and can be misused by the service provider. To protect the privacy of the users, we propose to encrypt the privacy sensitive data and generate recommendations by processing them under encryption. With this approach, the service provider learns no information on any user’s preferences or the recommendations made. The proposed method is based on homomorphic encryption schemes and secure multiparty computation (MPC) techniques. The overhead of working in the encrypted domain is minimized by packing data as shown in the complexity analysis

Temporal Decrease of Trivalent Chromium Concentration in a Standardized Algal Culture Medium: Experimental Results and Implications for Toxicity Evaluation

    Get PDF
The fate of two trivalent chromium salts (nitrate and chloride) in ISO algal culture medium was followed over 72h; i.e., the typical duration of algal toxicity tests. Fifty percent of the initial Cr spikes was lost from the solutions by 24h, with losses up to 90% after 72h. Monitoring of the temporal variability of Cr(III) concentrations in algal culture media appears necessary to better characterize the toxicity of trivalent chromium to alga
