Word2box: analysis and exploration of a geometric word embedding algorithm

    Get PDF
openVector word embeddings are powerful tools, but they do not naturally express uncertainty about the target concept. Furthermore, they do not naturally model asymmetric relations since they are compared using symmetric distance functions, such as dot product, cosine similarity, or Euclidean distance. This has led to the exploration of new ways of representing words based on Geometric Representations. Word2Box is a geometric extension of Word2Vec that learns region-based word representations that allow to perform set-theoretic operations between words. In fact, it is a fuzzy set interpretation of box embeddings, where each word is represented by an n-dimensional hyperrectangle, also called ”box”. This innovative approach enables the modeling of uncertainty and asymmetric relationships between words, offering a significant improvement over traditional vector embeddings. By leveraging the properties of fuzzy sets and geometric shapes, WordzBox provides a more nuanced and flexible representation of word meanings, allowing to capture complex linguistic relationships that cannot be represented with point-based embeddings. This thesis presents the analysis of the Word2Box algorithm, and provides a comprehensive explanation of the codebase, including some considerations on its effectiveness in capturing semantic relationships and its potential to enhance natural language processing tasks

CXCR7 Is Highly Expressed in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and Potentiates CXCR4 Response to CXCL12

Recently, a novel CXCL12-binding receptor, has been identified. This CXCL12-binding receptor commonly known as CXCR7 (CXC chemokine receptor 7), has lately, based on a novel nomenclature, has received the name ACKR3 (atypical chemokine receptor 3). in this study, we aimed to investigate the expression of CXCR7 in leukemic cells, as well as its participation in CXCL12 response. Interesting, we clearly demonstrated that CXCR7 is highly expressed in acute lymphoid leukemic cells compared with myeloid or normal hematopoietic cells and that CXCR7 contributed to T-acute lymphoid leukemic cell migration induced by CXCL12. Moreover, we showed that the cellular location of CXCR7 varied among T-lymphoid cells and this finding may be related to their migration capacity. Finally, we hypothesized that CXCR7 potentiates CXCR4 response and may contribute to the maintenance of leukemia by initiating cell recruitment to bone marrow niches that were once occupied by normal hematopoietic stem cells.

Probiotics to improve bioconversion and growth of black soldier fly larvae

    Get PDF
Hermetia illucens (Diptera, Stratiomyidae), also known as the black soldier fly, can successfully grow on several organic matters, converting them into larval biomass rich in protein and lipids. Today, the mass rearing of its larvae is of particularly attention for the production of alternative source of protein to be used in animal livestock. Insect gut microorganisms play an important role influencing different traits of the insect, as nutrition, growth and reproduction. Moreover, the supplementation of viable beneficial microbes in insect’s diet is way to improve overall health status and prevent diseases in the mass rearing. This study intended to assess the influence of different agro industrial by-products on the larval gut microbiome, and explore whether probiotic supplementation could enhance BSF growth and bioconversion ability. Brewer’s spent grains, okara, potato selection waste and potato peels were used as larval growing media leading to different results in terms of growth and bioconversion; best results were obtained with okara, while on the other by-products the development was slower, and on potato peels a high mortality was assessed (67%). Therefore, we administered probiotic bacteria to BSF larvae reared on suboptimal diets to evidence any potential probiotic impacts on BSF larvae. Sporeformer bacteria and lactic acid bacteria, previously isolated from the BSF gut, were tested both considering active and heat-inactivated cells. Supplementation with active bacteria indicated a potential positive influence, while higher final weights were achieved with the administration of heat-inactivated bacteria. However, heat-inactivated bacteria also resulted in a longer duration for the larvae to reach the prepupal stage. Overall, the supplementation of bacterial probiotics represents an intriguing strategy to improve BSF mass rearing

Viewing oxidative stress through the lens of oxidative signalling rather than damage

    Get PDF
Concepts of the roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plants and animals have shifted in recent years from focusing on oxidative damage effects to the current view of ROS as universal signalling metabolites. Rather than having two opposing activities, i.e. damage and signalling, the emerging concept is that all types of oxidative modification/damage are involved in signalling, not least in the induction of repair processes. Examining the multifaceted roles of ROS as crucial cellular signals, we highlight as an example the loss of PSII function called photoinhibition, where photo-protection has classically been conflated with oxidative damage

In this paper the author studies some sand samples from the coastal plain and beaches of south Brazil. He modifies the former opinion about the origin of the hard and brown layers of sand, before named by him mangrovito. He suggests the action of the underground water rich in organic matter as being responsible for the hardening of the ancient shore sands
