Optimal Extraction of Fibre Optic Spectroscopy
We report an optimal extraction methodology, for the reduction of
multi-object fibre spectroscopy data, operating in the regime of tightly packed
(and hence significantly overlapping) fibre profiles. The routine minimises
crosstalk between adjacent fibres and statistically weights the extraction to
reduce noise. As an example of the process we use simulations of the numerous
modes of operation of the AAOmega fibre spectrograph and observational data
from the SPIRAL Integral Field Unit at the Anglo-Australian Telescope.Comment: Accepted for publication in PAS
3D bioprinting for tissue engineering: Stem cells in hydrogels
Surgical limitations require alternative methods of repairing and replacing diseased and damaged tissue. Regenerative medicine is a growing area of research with engineered tissues already being used successfully in patients. However, the demand for such tissues greatly outweighs the supply and a fast and accurate method of production is still required. 3D bioprinting offers precision control as well as the ability to incorporate biological cues and cells directly into the material as it is being fabricated. Having precise control over scaffold morphology and chemistry is a significant step towards controlling cellular behaviour, particularly where undifferentiated cells, i.e., stem cells, are used. This level of control in the early stages of tissue development is crucial in building more complex systems that morphologically and functionally mimic in vivo tissue. Here we review 3D printing hydrogel materials for tissue engineering purposes and the incorporation of cells within them. Hydrogels are ideal materials for cell culture. They are structurally similar to native extracellular matrix, have a high nutrient retention capacity, allow cells to migrate and can be formed under mild conditions. Assessing cellular response to functionalized α-helical peptide hydrogels
α-Helical peptide hydrogels are decorated with a cell-binding peptide motif (RGDS), which is shown to promote adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of PC12 cells. Gel structure and integrity are maintained after functionalization. This opens possibilities for the bottom-up design and engineering of complex functional scaffolds for 2D and 3D cell cultures.</p
Business Strategy as Human Rights Risk: the Case of Private Equity
In this article, we apply the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to the private equity (PE) business model. PE firms often adopt a controversial, ‘value extractive’, business model based on high debt and extreme cost-cutting to generate investor returns. PE firms own large numbers of companies, including in many rights-related sectors. The model is linked to increased human rights risks to workers, housing tenants, and in privatized health and social care. We map these risks and analyse the human rights responsibilities of PE firms. Our analysis has major implications for understandings of human rights responsibility. We argue that value extractive methods are the root cause of eventual harm to human rights, even though they may not harm rights directly. To respect human rights, PE firms must mitigate the risks of these value extractive methods. We define how human rights due diligence (HRDD) could achieve this and argue that given the extent of harm and the lack of a business case for adopting such a view of human rights responsibility, business strategy level HRDD should be a core component of forthcoming HRDD laws
Human Rights: The Right to Work in Academia
This article considers aspects of The United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) (UN, 2006), relevant internationally, and the Equality Act 2010 which applies in England, Scotland and Wales. Focussing on work in academia, it explores insider perspective research involving disabled academics seeking to progress in academic careers. It illuminates barriers arising from systematic ableism and workplace injustices, and considers enablers which make academic work possible. Enablers include reliable, empathic, anticipatory, logical (REAL) systems, based on universal design, and peer support. Institutional failure to make employment work for disabled academics arises from ableist attitudes, culture and infrastructure which often inadvertently constructs disabling obstacles throughout the employment journey. Failing to address these issues translates into violations of human rights through non-compliance with equalities legislation, leading to wasted potential. The aim of this contribution is to support positive progress towards inclusive academic employment and the authors argue that lessons learned from the pandemic may be helpful in this regard
Older adults experiences of rehabilitation in acute health care
Rehabilitation is a key component of nursing and allied healthcare professionals’ roles in most health and social care settings. This paper reports on stage 2 of an action research project to ascertain older adult's experience of rehabilitation. Twenty postdischarge interviews were conducted and the interview transcripts were analysed using thematic content analysis. All older adults discharged from an acute older acute rehabilitation ward to their own homes in the community were eligible to participate. The only exclusion criterion was older adults who were thought to be unable to give consent to participate by the nurse in charge and the researcher. Whilst 92 older adults were eligible to participate in this research study, only 20 were interviewed. The findings from this study suggest that older adults valued communication with health professionals but were aware of their time constraints that hindered communication. This study suggests that both nurses and allied health professionals are not actively providing rehabilitative services to promote health and well-being, which contradicts the focus of active ageing. Furthermore, there was evidence of unmet needs on discharge, and older adults unable to recall the professions that were involved in their interventions and the rationale for therapy input. It is suggested that further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of allied health rehabilitation in the acute setting. This study highlights the need for further research into older adults’ perceptions of the rehabilitation process in the acute setting
Feasibility of vocal fold abduction and adduction assessment using cine-MRI
OBJECTIVE: Determine feasibility of vocal fold (VF) abduction and adduction assessment by cine magnetic resonance imaging (cine-MRI) METHODS: Cine-MRI of the VF was performed on five healthy and nine unilateral VF paralysis (UVFP) participants using an axial gradient echo acquisition with temporal resolution of 0.7 s. VFs were continuously imaged with cine-MRI during a 10-s period of quiet respiration and phonation. Scanning was repeated twice within an individual session and then once again at a 1-week interval. Asymmetry of VF position during phonation (VF phonation asymmetry, VFPa) and respiration (VF respiration asymmetry, VFRa) was determined. Percentage reduction in total glottal area between respiration and phonation (VF abduction potential, VFAP) was derived to measure overall mobility. An un-paired t-test was used to compare differences between groups. Intra-session, inter-session and inter-reader repeatability of the quantitative metrics was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: VF position asymmetry (VFPa and VFRa) was greater (p=0.012; p=0.001) and overall mobility (VFAP) was lower (p=0.008) in UVFP patients compared with healthy participants. ICC of repeatability of all metrics was good, ranged from 0.82 to 0.95 except for the inter-session VFPa (0.44). CONCLUSION: Cine-MRI is feasible for assessing VF abduction and adduction. Derived quantitative metrics have good repeatability. Parity Violation in Proton-Proton Scattering at 221 MeV
TRIUMF experiment 497 has measured the parity violating longitudinal
analyzing power, A_z, in pp elastic scattering at 221.3 MeV incident proton
energy. This paper includes details of the corrections, some of magnitude
comparable to A_z itself, required to arrive at the final result. The largest
correction was for the effects of first moments of transverse polarization. The
addition of the result, A_z=(0.84 \pm 0.29 (stat.) \pm 0.17 (syst.)) \times
10^{-7}, to the pp parity violation experimental data base greatly improves the
experimental constraints on the weak meson-nucleon coupling constants
h^{pp}_\rho and h^{pp}_\omega, and has implications for the interpretation of

Trouble at the top: The construction of a tenant identity in the governance of social housing organizations
The project of citizen governance has transformed the social housing sector in England where 20,000 tenants now sit as directors on the boards of housing associations, but the entrance of social housing tenants to the boardroom has aroused opposition from the chief executives of housing companies and triggered regulatory intervention from government inspectors. This paper investigates the cause of these tensions through a theoretical framework drawn from the work of feminist philosopher Judith Butler. It interprets housing governance as an identificatory project with the power to constitute tenant directors as regulated subjects, and presents evidence to suggest that this project of identity fails to completely enclose its subject, allowing tenant directors to engage in ‘identity work’ that threatens the supposed unity of the board. The paper charts the development of antagonism and political tension in the board rooms of housing companies to present an innovative account of the construction and contestation of identities in housing governance
