    Model Order Reduction for Rotating Electrical Machines

    The simulation of electric rotating machines is both computationally expensive and memory intensive. To overcome these costs, model order reduction techniques can be applied. The focus of this contribution is especially on machines that contain non-symmetric components. These are usually introduced during the mass production process and are modeled by small perturbations in the geometry (e.g., eccentricity) or the material parameters. While model order reduction for symmetric machines is clear and does not need special treatment, the non-symmetric setting adds additional challenges. An adaptive strategy based on proper orthogonal decomposition is developed to overcome these difficulties. Equipped with an a posteriori error estimator the obtained solution is certified. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    An Efficient Plane-Waves Superposition Method for Improved Spatial Correlation in Simulated Reverberation Chambers

    Accurate Rayleigh propagation environments within an ideal reverberation chamber (RC) are synthesized computationally using a superposition of plane-waves (PWs). Randomness in the electro-magnetic (EM) field distribution is achieved by synthesizing many field realizations featuring slant-polarized PWs with randomly defined transverse field components. These PWs propagate along a large number of predefined and uniformly distributed directions determined only once via an efficient spiraling sampling scheme over the unit sphere. Comparisons with theoretical Rayleigh field statistics indicate that the proposed method yields random EM field distributions that in several cases follow more closely the field spatial correlation properties, for comparable numerical burden, than other available numerical techniques. Finally, a formula relating the number of PWs to the size of a desired RC analysis volume was provided

    On the Correlation Between Incident Power Density and Temperature Increase for Exposures at Frequencies Above 6 GHz

    International guidelines/standards for human exposure to electromagnetic fields have recently been revised to update the dosimetric reference limits (DRLs or basic restrictions) and exposure reference levels (ERLs), specifically for frequencies above 6 GHz. At such frequencies, the ERL is defined in terms of incident power density (IPD) and used as a practical quantity to assess compliance with DRLs (absorbed or epithelial power density) and therefore appropriately limits temperature elevation at the body surface. In the exposure standards, IPD is spatially averaged over an area of 4 cm(2) below 30 GHz and 1 cm(2) above 30 GHz, however the definition of IPD is given in a theoretical manner. With the progress in the development of product safety compliance assessment standards, one concern has been how to define the IPD considering practical measurement procedures. Two definitions or averaging methods were considered: using IPD vectors normal to the averaging surface and using magnitude (norm) of IPD vectors. As the exposure guidelines are intended to prevent excessive tissue heating, statistical analysis was therefore undertaken to investigate which IPD metric better correlates with the temperature increase. To this end, a large data set for several exposure scenarios was collected by different research institutions. The analysis of the obtained results is presented and shows that both definitions have high correlation with temperature rise, with slightly better correlation (0.9 vs. 0.8) for the definition using the magnitude of IPD vectors

    Acetylation of histone lysine residues is one of the most well-studied post-translational modifications of chromatin, selectively recognized by bromodomain “reader” modules. Inhibitors of the bromodomain and extra terminal domain (BET) family of bromodomains have shown profound anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties, generating much interest in targeting other bromodomain-containing proteins for disease treatment. Herein, we report the discovery of I-BRD9, the first selective cellular chemical probe for bromodomain-containing protein 9 (BRD9). I-BRD9 was identified through structure-based design, leading to greater than 700-fold selectivity over the BET family and 200-fold over the highly homologous bromodomain-containing protein 7 (BRD7). I-BRD9 was used to identify genes regulated by BRD9 in Kasumi-1 cells involved in oncology and immune response pathways and to the best of our knowledge, represents the first selective tool compound available to elucidate the cellular phenotype of BRD9 bromodomain inhibition

    Large family with both parents affected by distinct BRCA1 mutations: implications for genetic testing

    Although the probability of both parents being affected by BRCA1 mutations is not negligible, such families have not been systematically described in the literature. Here we present a large breast-ovarian cancer family, where 3 sisters and 1 half-sister inherited maternal BRCA1 5382insC mutation while the remaining 2 sisters carried paternal BRCA1 1629delC allele. No BRCA1 homozygous mutations has been detected, that is consistent with the data on lethality of BRCA1 knockout mice. This report exemplifies that the identification of a single cancer-predisposing mutation within the index patient may not be sufficient in some circumstances. Ideally, all family members affected by breast or ovarian tumor disease have to be subjected to the DNA testing, and failure to detect the mutation in any of them calls for the search of the second cancer-associated allele

    Occupational image, organisational image and identity in dirty work: Intersections of organisational efforts and media accounts

    This article proposes that media representations of an occupational category may intersect with organizations’ efforts to construct a positive organizational identity and image. We fuse three streams of literature namely, organizational identity and image, media and the social construction of reality, and dirty work to extend extant literature on organizational identity and image. Attention is drawn to occupational image as the position of an occupational category in society. We contend that occupational image is likely to influence the decisions and actions taken by organizations and its members, in particular when the occupation is central to the organization’s mission. Occupational image is partly informed by the media. We analyse one year of media coverage of a dirty work occupation, specifically exotic dancing, and identify various ways in which the media portrays the exotic dancing occupation and the organizations providing these services. We focus upon two of these categories, namely Public (dis) Order and Art and Entertainment. We also draw upon a variety of data from one organization, For Your Eyes Only, to explore how organizational efforts to construct a positive organizational identity (based upon professionalism and legitimacy) and image (based upon fantasy, exclusivity and high quality service) intersect these media representations

    V. GROSSMAN'S NOVEL "LIFE AND FATE" REVIEWED BY CONSERVATIVE SOVIET CRITICS IN THE 1980S

    This work focuses on the specific features of the reception of V. Grossman’s novel “Life and Fate” in conservative Soviet press of the late 1980s. It is noted that most of the reviews appeared in two conservative journals: “Nash sovremennik” (“Our Contemporary”) and “Molodaya gvardiya” (“The Young Guard”). All the articles contained copious critical remarks which, in their turn, were all caused by the ethnic problems highlighted in the novel. The author’s attitude to those issues was usually qualified by the critics as being Russophobic and once the accusation was made, the plot of the novel would be neglected, which testifies to the fact of all the reviewers being biased.</jats:p
